Record No.has two sets of information - both the same

Post by mharmour » 16 Sep 2013 14:40

I hope someone will be able to help. I have a husband and wife with two sets of information against each with exactly the same record number for each set of information e.g. for example say Record No 400 for Joe Bloggs with his information but showing twice married to Mary Smith Record No 401 with her information showing twice. I cannot delete either record because it will also delete five generations above in each case. Is there a simple way of dealing with this situation without losing a lot of information?

Check on the "All" Tab to see if you managed to "Marry" them twice. Then delete the incorrect marriage entry.

Are you possibly talking about duplicate displayed boxes in a Diagram?

In which case, that is a normal side effect of an All Relations Diagram when there is a great many Ancestors.

The Husband & Wife are displayed next to each other as a married couple.

They are also both displayed amongst their siblings in what is called a Proxy Box with a transparent fill and no details.

This allows you to see them in both contexts as shown below.

I have lots of cousins marrying each other which makes my tree like spaghetti junction when viewing it in diagram form but in this case I have the same information on the Record No twice for both husband and wife. If I produce a report for the individual it shows exactly the same information twice i.e. birth, marriage, death etc. If I delete the records for Mr & Mrs I will lose not just the extra details but the original details. It is difficult to explain! I've never encountered this problem before though. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Is it possible that this is caused by having a duplicate Family record for this couple? As suggested above, this would be seen on the All tab of the Property Box, and in the Families tab of the Records Window. If this tab is not already shown, you can use the Records Window tab of the Preferences dialog to make it visible.

If you look at Hans Martin REBER either in the Focus Window or his Property Box, does he have TWO Spouses with the same name: Rosina REBER?

One is a duplicate link to the same Individual record for Rosina REBER, and also the children links have been duplicated.

On the Focus Window right-click on one of the Rosina REBER boxes and choose Unlink Record.

Note that none of this deletes Records it simply unlinks the Spouse relationship.

Of all the relationships to children, parents, & spouses, FH only allows Spouse links to be duplicated to the same Individual.
I guess this may be to allow them to be Married, Divorced, and Married again.
If not, then it is a bug.

Thank you everyone for your help. I tried the unlinking option suggested by tatewise and it worked. :D What a relief. Still not sure how it happened but at least it is OK now. (Yes Hans Martin Reber had two spouses with the same name and record identifier) Thank You!!

You would do well to check a couple of other things.

Check in the Focus Window to see if Rosina REBER has TWO husbands named Hans Martin REBER.
If so, then unlink as before.
BUT take care to unlink the correct one, otherwise you will end up with two single parent families.
Check the Focus Window for Hans Martin REBER to check he still has a wife.
If not, then Edit > Undo, and unlink the other husband.

Check the Records Window on the Families tab for a Family Record ... of (parents not known) with the three Children.
( If necessary use View > Record Lists > Families )
This Family Record can be deleted.
