New user - sources help

Post by EHerts » 09 Mar 2013 14:09

I have imported my tree from PAF and I'm trying to provide repositories and sources for my records.

I have been following the instructions in the leaflet 'Where to Record it' and the book 'Getting the most from Family Historian 5'.

However, I'm not adding new information - e.g. with my grandmother's birth certificate the information is already on my tree. I have added a repository and source, but I'm not sure whether I'm doing the right thing after that.

For example, for the occupation of her father on the certificate, what do I do? I don't think I already have his occupation but I'm really not sure what I should record again.

Hi EHarts, welcome to the FHUG.

Take a look at the Knowledge Base and in particular Entering from a Birth Certificate.

Bear in mind this is starting from scratch, and as you say you already have some data entered.

So having created your Source Record as explained in the tutorial, you need to link it to your Facts.
In the Property Box open the Facts tab and ensure the yellow Sources pane is displayed as explained in Sources.
Then use the Add Citation button to link the Fact to the Source Record.
For a non-existent Fact such as Occupation, use the Add Fact button and select Occupation from the list, then proceed as above.

When it comes to Baptism, Marriage and Census Events it is advisable to use Ancestral Sources, which includes the option to replace any existing Facts with new ones that AS creates.
Birth, Death, Burial and Probate are in the pipeline.
