Multimedia Overlap, Family vs Source Records

Post by BobWard » 26 Feb 2013 01:09

Is there a recommended protocol for linking pictures to Family records and Source records so that duplicate images are not displayed in reports?

For example, I have my parent's marriage license image linked to the Source record for their marriage.  I also have the same photo image linked as a Family record since it pertains to both of them.

The problem this creates is that when I generate a report, the image shows up twice, once as a Family record and again in my Source citations at the end of the report.

Is there a preferred way to handle this type of conflict?

Personally I never attach source media to individuals, if you want to do this you will need to flag one or the other of the media links as not for use in reports.

Bob, you maybe overlooking that the Marriage Event is a Family Fact that applies to the Family Record (not the Individual Record although it is also listed there).
The Marriage Event cites the Source Record that links to the Marriage Licence image.
So this image already pertains to both of them as a Family couple.
This is the designed purpose of Family Facts such as Marriage and Divorce and their associated Source Records.

But as Jane says, if you really want to keep the double link, then on the Multimedia tab of one of them, use Edit Media, and tick Exclude from Reports.

OK, so you are suggesting that I delete the link between the marriage license photo and Family records.  Then I leave that multimedia link intact for the Source citation of their marriage.

I did this and it seems to provide an acceptable report format.  No more double images - the marriage license image only appears once as part of the Source citation at the end of the report.  So it makes sense not to have the double link for these type of records, even though as you say, I could turn one set of images off via Multimedia>Edit>Exclude.

Thank you both for the suggestion.
