multimedia links

I am in a bit of a muddle (again) with linking photos to records.  I thought I had it cracked as to how to change paths, but need advice.  The best way of showing where I am now would be to attach a screen print.  Can I attach one here or send one separately.

Thanks,
Martin

You can upload and insert an image here (just make sure it's not too large).

Click the upload image option 'Upload Image File maximum size 150Kb (.jpg , .gif , .png)' below the edit box select your file and remember to click the click here link once the file has uploaded.

You should not have to move paths around as long as you use a Project and keep all your media in the media folder. The most common reason for this being broken is copying or renaming the gedcom file with in a Project rather than using the Rename or copy option on the Project window.

Many thanks Jane.

What I thought would be a simple matter to paste in the screenprint turned out to be not so.  As you will see I use dropbox so as to access FH from different computers.

I will explain what I see:
In the Current Tree File box is
c:documents and settingsmartin thomasmy documentsdropboxgenealogythomas.saward people.fh_datathomas.saward people.ged

In the File Links window at the top is C with, to the right of it, a line going down to GEDCOM Folder/Media folder/folder named Family photos for Family Historian program/ then a lot of images with good links.

Down from C are the folders /Documents and Settings/martinthomas/My Documents/Dropbox/genealogy/thomas.saward people.fh_data/Media/Family photos for Family Historian program/then one image with a good link.  This last image should really be with the others in the GEDCOM folder, how do I rearrange it?

Sorry this is complicated.

Regards, Martin

Try just selecting the the 1 picture in the wrong place and clicking on the remap with in media folder option.

Also, because the File Links start with GEDCOM Folder tells me FH thinks you have a standalone GEDCOM file instead of a Project.
This is because your file path ...dropboxgenealogythomas.saward people.fh_datathomas.saward people.ged is NOT a Project path.

The above scenario probably explains why your Multimedia links keep going astray.

The File Links should start with Project Data Folder.
To adjust your setup to be a Project please ensure the following applies:
  • In Windows Explorer change the file path to ...dropboxgenealogythomas.saward peoplethomas.saward people.fh_datathomas.saward people.ged
  • i.e. Create the folder thomas.saward people and Move the thomas.saward people.fh_data folder into it.
  • In FH File > Project Window ensure that Location specifies My Documentsdropboxgenealogy.
  • In FH File > Project Window use More Tasks > Samples > Reset Sample Project to add Family Historian Sample Project to FH Projects list.
  • If your thomas.saward people Project is still not listed in FH File > Project Window then
    • In Windows Explorer ensure ...dropboxgenealogythomas.saward peoplethomas.saward people.fh_proj FH Project File exists.
    • If not, then copy Family Historian Sample Project.fh_proj file from Family Historian Sample Project folder to thomas.saward people folder.
    • Rename this file to thomas.saward people.fh_proj. (NOTE: The extension .fh_proj may not be visible on your PC.)
Then your thomas.saward people Project should be listed in File > Project Window and More Tasks lets it be made Default Project.
Thereafter, adding Media should be more reliable.
It also allows your Projects to be moved/saved more reliably, enables FH Charts and Website/CD/DVD to be created, and ensures all Plugins will function.

Many thanks to both Mike Tate and Jane for these replies.  I shall work on them when I have someone who is more computer literate than me by my side!
