Family Historian User Group

I have recently installed V5 (full version) ‘on top of’ my pre existing V2, and have also downloaded the latest 5.09 upgrade. I’m very pleased with the new software and taking time to again work through the sample projects described in the book ‘Getting the most out of Family Historian 5’.

However, I have two minor issues on which I would welcome clarification:

1)Property Box – ‘Facts’ Tab, when attempting to ‘Add Fact’ the Event/Attribute list is absent when that screen opens. I need to click on ‘More’ then ‘Show Hidden’ before the list appears. Should this list show by default as the book (pages 57/58) suggests?
2)Backup/Restore – V5 allows for three types of backup - small, medium and full (book, page 215), but I’m not sure which is which. Am I right in thinking that ‘small’ is solely the GEDCOM file(s), medium is any selected project folder (e.g.) ‘My Family’, including any changes to layout, settings etc and ‘full’ is all projects, including (e.g.) the FH sample projects?

Help in understanding the above would be welcome.

1. There is a detailed description of the backup types in the help. Just open the help and search for backup. You may also find this knowledge base article helpful.

2. Have you tried opening Tools>Work With Fact Sets. It sounds as if your facts are all hidden. Try setting the ones you use to Show.

1. Use Tools > Work with Fact Sets and click Show Hidden.
Select all the Facts by clicking the first one, then while holding the Shft key click the last one.
Then click the Show button.

2. In addition to what Jane has said, take particular note of What is not backed up.
Refer to how to Move Family Historian Settings & Projects and Understanding the Scope of Features for details of what settings are stored where.

3. Have you converted your GEDCOM data to the new Project structure?
If not, then several new features will be inhibited.
For more details use File > Project Window and click on Tips for New & Upgrading Users then Notes for Upgrading Users.

Opening Tools>Work With Fact Sets has no effect i.e. the list is still missing by default. If I set the ones I use to 'Show' I get the message ‘The selection included one or more events and attributes which are undefined. ‘Show’ has no effect on these events and attributes. Press the help button…

Help tells me ‘If an event/attribute has as the fact set (which mine has) you will only see this if you have ticked ‘Show Hidden’ (which I did)…this means it is undefined… and you are given the opportunity to create a new definition for it.’

Having read the above I’m confused because - even though events/attributes don’t show by default - if I simply highlight the required event or attribute and click ‘Add’ it shows it correctly on the ‘fact’ page where it should do without me needing to create a new definition!

I have also studied the help notes regarding backup/restore. All is now clear and have successfully completed a backup of my project work!

So if I understand correctly your Work with Facts Set window looks like this:



If you click on the Fact Sets button, what Fact Sets are listed?

If you tick Show Hidden does it look anything like this:



Note that just the Hobby Fact has Fact Set and Visible .

If you select all the Facts and click Show, and OK the warning message, the window should look something like this:



What is the contents of the following two folders that should hold the Fact Set definition files?

If you have Windows XP the above folders will start:

Yes, the screen shots reflect the correct situation. The event/attribute list is empty. If I > Fact Sets the ‘mini’ screen shows only (?) 1. Standard. If I them ‘Show Hidden’ the entire list is as your ‘Hobby’ example (i.e.) ‘none’ and ‘undefined’. Highlighting ‘All’ and ‘OK’ the warning message the list remains the same.

What I find strange is that, despite the above, I am still able, once I tick ‘Show Hidden’, to add any event/attribute to a property box and use it. It just seems odd that the list is hidden by default.

I am using XP, but a bit of a novice: how/where do I access -

As Mike said, for users of XP, the relevant folders are:

C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily HistorianStandard
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily HistorianCustom

and the first of these should contain a file Standard.fhf.

Micros**t introduced C:ProgramData... for systems later than XP, e.g. Vista and Windows 7.

The list is compiled from every Event/Attribute already used in your data, but it seems none are defined by a Fact Set, not even the Standard one.
Also, the Sentence at the bottom of the Facts tab of any Individual Property Box will not read sensibly.

Both the Help screen and 'Getting the most out of Family Historian 5' (page 58) mentions it can be down, but not how.

Mike, thank you for this and for your patience.

I am attempting to restore the missing Standard Fact Sheet. I have found the two via: Local Disk (C) > Program Files > Family Historian > Fact Types > Standard. There are two Standards (Standard and Standard V1) but no GroupIndex FHDATA File.

But, nevertheless if I do have to copy one or both Standard files I’m unable to find a location where to paste them. If I go Local Disk C > Documents and Settings > All Users > Shared Documents > Calico Pie > Family Historian > Tutorial Files. There is no Application Data file after All Users, and in the Family Historian File only the Tutorial Files sub folder is shown. Any thoughts?

I think that the folder C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication Data is present but is unfortunately Hidden.  In Windows Explorer you need to use the Tools menu Folder Options... and then click on the View tab.  Under Hidden files and folders you need to select the option Show hidden files and folders and click OK.

You should then be able to COPY the file Standard (which may have the suffix .fhf hidden) FROM
C:Program FilesFamily HistorianFact Types
TO
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily HistorianFact TypesStandard

Peter's advice is absolutely correct as explained under FH Program Data Folder in the Knowledge Base.
While there on the View tab it is a good idea to untick Hide extensions for known file types on the next line.

Yes, COPY the two Fact Set files Standard.fhf and Standard.v1.fhf.

The GroupIndex.fhdata file should get created automatically by FH once the Standard Fact Set files are in place.

If all that fixes the problem, then check that Standard Diagrams and Reports and Queries all work OK.

It seems possible that FH V5 may not reliably update from FH V2, or perhaps your FH V2 always had the problem but it had gone unnoticed.

In Windows Explorer, if I select Show hidden files and folders and follow the route: C:/ Documents and SettingsAll usersApplication DataCalico PieFamily HistorianFact TypesStandard, then the three files - GroupIndex FHDATA File, Standard and Standard V1 – are already there. Likewise, there is a Custom Fact Sheet in the Custom Folder.

Similarly: Program FilesFamily HistorianFact Types Standard and Standard V1 are present.

Perhaps therefore, I do not need to copy files from Program Files to Documents and Settings? I wonder if this issue is something to do with FHV5 and FHV2 ‘compatibility’ as suggested by Mike.

Anything else you can suggest?

Using Windows Explorer please compare the Size and Date Modified for the Standard.fhf and Standard.v1.fhf files in both folders.

If there is any discrepancy, then please COPY as advised earlier.

If the issue is to do with FH V2 being upgraded to FH V5 then it has already happened and can only be investigated by Calico Pie.
I know that FH V5 takes note of certain changes made to the Standard.fhf file before FH V5 is installed.
So if FH V2 had somehow upset the Standard.fhf file, then that may have confused FH V5.
The best fix is to COPY as advised earlier.

There is a discrepancy between the two ‘Standards’, but do we know which one is right? Do I copy from Program Files to Documents and Settings or vice versa?

Whichever one I copy I assume I’ll get a message that says something like ‘The file/folder already exists do you what to replace it?’

The files in C:Program FilesFamily Historian... are those supplied as part of the program.  The files in C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily Historian... are sometimes modified when the program is used, and in this case appear to have been corrupted.

Thank you Peter. I have successfully copied the file from Program Files to Documents and Setting. All now seems well and the fix became immediately apparent when I > Add Fact and the Event/Attribute list was there, without having to ‘Show Hidden’ first. Similarly, as Mike suggested, I have looked at Diagrams, Reports and Queries, and they all seem okay.

Thanks again to you both for your help and patience while a novice works thought his understanding of Windows and FHV5.
