Missing Project in Project Window

Post by rfj1001 » 15 Nov 2012 13:27

I've got six projects showing in the project window - but the first I created (and the one I access most) isn't shown. How can I get this to show as its a bit of a pain searching always for the appropriate file to open.

Can someone also remind me how to make a project the default.

Thanks

Robin

There are several ways to make a Project the Default.

(1) With the Project Window open, highlight the desired Project and either right-click it, or click More Tasks, and select Default Project.
A tick should then appear against that Project in the list.

(2) Use Tools > Preferences > Startup tab and click <<Select. If the desired Project is currently open then choose Make Current File the Default otherwise Browse for the GEDCOM file.

There are a number of reasons your first project is not listed as a Project.

(a) It is not located in the same Family Historian Projects folder as your other five Projects.

(b) It is not actually a Project but a Standalone GEDCOM.

(c) Some other minor problem with folder/file names that has confused FH.

Can you explain how & where you search 'for the appropriate file to open' and it will give us a clue as to which problem to solve.

Missing Project in Project Window

Thanks Mike for the pointers, as always,

I keep all my data off my pc and on a raid drive whether it is FH or anything else (battle scars of several data losses over the years :).

That's where my main project is - it's path is G:Family Historian Projects. (Yes, it is a project.)

Incorrectly, I assumed that future projects would also be created there. But, on checking, they are all in C:Users.......Family Historian Projects folder.

So I guess the question now is, how can I change the default directory for all projects to the G drive and appropriate folder?

Thanks.

ps Options to make this project the default were limited because it didn't show up in the Project Window - but the preferences/startup option you gave worked :)

You can specify the Location for Projects by clicking on the current location specified in the Project Window:

Rob, you need to copy/move all the Projects from C:Users.......Family Historian Projects to G:Family Historian Projects.
Either use Windows Explorer to move them all in one go, or use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Copy Project per Project.

Hopefully, all your Projects use Relative Multimedia File Paths, otherwise they will have to be adjusted, preferably before the move.
To check, open each Project in turn and use Tools > Work with External File Links.
Ensure each one only has File Links starting with Project Data Folder - Media, and no mention of C: or any other drive letter.
If drives are mentioned, use Re-Map > Re-map within Project Data Folder.

Then, as Peter says, use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Project List > Choose Location for Projects or click on the blue Location link and select Choose Location in order to set G:Family Historian Projects as the default.

Once the move is satisfactorily completed, you can delete the contents of the C:Users.......Family Historian Projects folder.
