Work with External File Links Error

Post by belmore » 30 Oct 2012 21:08

I am using Family Historian v5.07 together with Windows 8

When I select 'TOOLS>Work With External File Links' - the program produces the following message:

'An Error Has Occurred. Unable to Display Dialogue'

I previously successfully used this command under Win7

Has anyone else experienced this problem

I know this may not help, but the FH System Requirements do not include Windows 8.

Work with External File Links Error

Post by goodwin2 » 17 Nov 2012 07:53

I am soon to get a new computer that will have Windows 8 which already will be quite a change from my current operating system.  Now I'm concerned that I may have problems with FH 5 and Windows 8.

Hopefully there will be solutions to any that come up????[confused]

Is there another update from FH 5.07 expected?

Looking for reassuring info!!

This problem turned out to be a data problem in the folder, and also occurred on Windows 7.

Calico Pie have now confirmed under their System Requirements that FH V5 is supported on Windows 8.

There is a V5.0.9 Release Candidate that supersedes V5.0.7.

Note that in their infinite wisdom Microsoft have removed the standard Desktop Start Menu and Taskbar from Windows 8, although in many other respects its Desktop mode is very similar to Windows 7.
There are a couple of free utilities that have been reported in the press, that put these missing features back.
Has anyone used them and if so perhaps we could list them in the FHUG Downloads ~ Freeware Utilities.

The new Windows 8 start screen is very different to the start menu, but far more powerful than the Windows 7/XP/Vista start menu. There are always people who dislike change and install utilities to make it feel like a previous version. I remember when XP came out there were so many complaints about how different it was to Windows 98 and similar utilities were created. My advice is to give it a good chance before deciding you don't like it. Use it for a few days, spend some time getting to know how it works. I've been using Windows 8 for a couple of months now and I prefer it to Windows 7.

The Windows 8 desktop is almost identical to Windows 7 desktop (with a few improvements) and does still have the taskbar. In fact if you pin the programs that use to the taskbar then you'll hardly ever even need to access the start screen anyway.

Off-topic, I know, but one reason I will NOT be moving from Windows 7 to Windows 8, for the foreseeable future, is the loss of XP Mode which I need especially for my scanner, which cannot otherwise be used in Windows 7.

Even with windows 7, XP mode was not available in all versions (only professional and above). I think windows 8 is the same.

No, there is no XP Mode in any version of Windows 8.

If you really need to keep using an old device, as long at it's usb you can normally use VmWare Player or similar to create a virtual machine and run the drivers on that.
