but why would it be such a faf now installing V5 is so easy
It's only through researching this problem that I now realise how much easier re-installation is. Good news!
It is worth checking as it appears DEP sometimes changes on its own.
Instead of adding FH to the list of DEP exceptions, you can set 'Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only'.
Tried that, to no avail.

I'm having a very helpful response from Calico Pie, & they've now asked for a copy of my recent backup so they can explore further.

BTW, I'm used to using UBBC tags on other forums, but they seem to work differently here. How do you do a partial quote and include the 'author said' bit?

Calico Pie have provided me with a fix (5.0.9) which hopefully will resolve the 'stopped working' problem I reported. I have copied below my reply to them which includes the result of the first test of 5.0.9 and some more recent history with 5.0.7. -
Reply to Calico Pie:
Many thanks for the trial upgrade (5.0.9) which I've installed without any problems. On first use of 5.0.9 there were no problems but I will monitor it over the next week or so and send you a summary of the results.

I can confirm that I have thumbnails set to load automatically and to the best of my knowledge I have never disabled hardware acceleration.

Re hardware acceleration I have checked preferences and the only setting that I think relates to that is the Preferences>General>Advanced >PC performance setting which I have always had set to auto-detect, if I should check some other setting please let me know what it is.

Re the previous version 5.0.7, I had been continuing to monitor occurrences of the 'stopped working' problem and these are the results since 22 Oct 2012 (all with auto load of thumbnails enabled) -

22/10/12 Failed.
23/10/12 Worked.
24/10/12 Worked.
24/10/12 Failed, but worked at 2nd attempt.
25/10/12 Worked
26/10/12 Worked
27/10/12 Failed - worked at 2nd attempt.
28/10/12 Worked
29/10/12 Worked
30/10/12 Worked

So for some reason the issue had gone from occurring every time I opened Family Historian 5.0.7 to intermittent. There have been no application software (other than auto Windows/Java/etc updates) or hardware changes since the fault changed from being regular to intermittent but in that period the number of files in the media folder has grown from 394 to 433.

Thanks again for you help, I'll be in touch again with further results of 5.0.9.

I've been using 5.0.9 for some time now and the 'Stopped Working' problem seems to have been fixed, it has never happened since using this trial version.
