Gedcom Census 5.1

Post by NickWalker » 30 Jun 2006 20:52

This is the latest version of the free utility designed to be used with Family Historian, but not officially associated with or endorsed by Calico Pie Software. Gedcom Census was described in a review in the May edition of Your Family Tree magazine (http://www.yourfamilytreemag.co.uk) as 'a useful add on that every user should have'. Since the first version was released in January 2004 it has been downloaded over 6000 times from the FHUG website.

Use Gedcom Census to record census entries that apply to your family. Gedcom Census will create appropriate sources, census events, occupations and births and will allow images of the census to be linked. All of this information is recorded using the Family Historian GEDCOM format and can be included in Family Historian reports, queries, trees, etc. Gedcom Census has comprehensive help documentation and features to make it easy to use and to accommodate different methods of recording census entries.

Gedcom Census is free to use but I am very happy to accept donations via the options within the application and would like to thank again all those users who have made donations so far. They have certainly encouraged me to continue with development.

This new Gedcom Census 5.1 includes many enhancements, though the major changes relate to support for flags which are a powerful new feature available in the new Family Historian 3. There are also lots of new options available to try to satisfy the varied requirements of different researchers who often want to record things in slightly different ways. The new features are:
  • It is possible that some census events in a GEDCOM file may have different dates than those for the same census that were recorded using Gedcom Census. E.g. some 1901 census events may just have '1901' as the date recorded whereas Gedcom Census would record the date as 31 March 1901. There is now a 'Check Census Dates' form that can be used to make the dates used consistent throughout the file. It also changes the dates of associated census occupations. This is particularly useful when using the new flag facilities.
  • Version 3 of Family Historian introduced Flags and Icons. Flags can be particularly useful for recording which census years each individual is mentioned in and then these can be shown clearly using icons in a diagram. There is now a form which allows flags to be allocated to any supported country's census years or dates so that any census events created using Gedcom Census will be automatically flagged. Gedcom Census can be set to automatically check that the flags are correctly set each time the file is loaded.
  • When opening a file, Gedcom Census will now ask whether the file should be opened by default each time it runs. This means that it is no longer necessary to choose which file to load every time.
  • There is now a 'refocus immediate family' check box on the Find Individual screen. If this is ticked then the immediate family list will change to show the immediate family of the selected person.
  • There is now an option to customise the format of the title given to a source using recording method 1.
  • When using the Find Individual Screen there is now a box which will list the details of any census events associated with the selected person.
  • There is now a search by ID feature on the Find Individual Screen.
If you select the wrong individual by accident it is now possible to remove any of them and not just the last one selected.
  • It is now possible to link census images to source citations (or to census events) when using recording method 2.
  • When using recording method 1 there are now options to record the date of the census and the census reference within the citation record. This isn't necessary and is not selected by default but was requested by several Gedcom Census users.
  • There is now an option to use the citation 'Entry Date' field to record the date the census record was typed in to Gedcom Census (the GEDCOM standard suggests that the field should be used for the date of the source record, i.e. the census date).
  • There is now an option for method 1 to record the census reference in the Publication Information field within the source record.
  • There is now an option for method 2 to record the census text in a shared note. This is linked to the citations for census, occupation and birth. For those users who use method 2 this is probably the best way to record a transcription of each census record.
  • There is now an option to record the age of the individual as recorded in the census within any occupation attributes that are created.
  • There is now an option to not record the census place within occupation attributes.
  • The Auto-text button will now not show relationship or place of birth if the entry is for the UK 1841 census. This was suggested by Robin Price.
  • When a new image is added to the file, Gedcom Census now by default creates a Link/Note record. There is an option available to not do this. This link makes it possible for Family Historian queries and columns to find the source linked to any image.
  • When attaching images that can not be previewed within Gedcom Census (e.g. PDF or Word documents), the Windows default viewer for the file type can now be opened by Gedcom Census to preview the images.
  • There is now an option to have the Gedcom Census 'Source Text' recorded in the source Note field rather than the Text from Source field.
  • Fixed a major problem where the census record was linking to the wrong source. This could happen if recording method 2 is being used and the sources in the GEDCOM file are not in source ID order.
  • The Auto Text feature has always suggested scholar for the occupation column of any individual aged between 4 and 15 who does not have an occupation specified, this was useful for users who don't record scholar as an occupation. There is now an option to stop Gedcom Census from doing this, if the option is selected then scholar will only ever be filled in by Auto Text if it has been specified in the occupation field for the individual.
  • Fixed a problem where Auto Text can crash when the head of household has multiple family records.
  • Fixed a problem where loading a file with over 32,000 place names in it caused Gedcom Census to crash.
  • Fixed a problem relating to the Show All checkbox which didn't always give the expected results.
  • Fixed a problem where linking 3 census images to a source wasn't working. Generally tidied up the way that linking images works and how the images are named if more than one image is being linked.
The detailed full list of features and bug-fixes, acknowledging those who suggested the changes, can be seen in the contents page of the help file that is installed with Gedcom Census. If you need any help with Gedcom Census and you can’t find the answer in the Gedcom Census help pages then please ask questions via the Gedcom Census forum on this website or email using the address given in the Help contents page.

Thanks to everyone who has helped to make this new version possible by suggesting new features, pointing out problems and helping with testing. Thanks as always to Jane for continuing to host this utility on the FHUG website.

Gedcom Census 5.1

Post by pricero1 » 02 Jul 2006 20:01

GEDCOM Census is a terrific utility that I am glad to use - thanks Nick. However, wouldn't it be fantastic if this functionality were available directly in Family Historian. I guess that this is what was meant in the wish-list item 'formal data entry'.

If Family Historian had entry forms for censuses and births (baptisms), marriages and deaths (burials), it would move into a league of its own.

Maybe this could be the shape of FH4?
