Gedcom Census Version 5.3

Post by NickWalker » 03 Jan 2007 12:43

This is the latest version of the free utility designed to be used with Family Historian, but not officially endorsed by Calico Pie Software. Gedcom Census was described in a review in the May edition of Your Family Tree magazine (http://www.yourfamilytreemag.co.uk) as 'a useful add on that every user should have'. Since the first version was released in January 2004 it has been downloaded over 7500 times from the FHUG website.

Use Gedcom Census to record census entries that apply to your family. Gedcom Census will create appropriate sources, census events, occupations and births and will allow images of the census to be linked. All of this information is recorded using the Family Historian GEDCOM format and can be included in Family Historian reports, queries, trees, etc. Gedcom Census has comprehensive help documentation and features to make it easy to use and to accommodate different methods of recording census entries.

Gedcom Census is free to use but I am very happy to accept donations via the options within the application and would like to thank again all those users who have made donations so far. They have certainly encouraged me to continue with development.

This new Gedcom Census 5.3 includes a few useful new features and bug fixes:
  • Added an information icon next to each chosen individual. Clicking on this icon will display the information which is usually only displayed about the most recently chosen individual at the bottom of the screen.
  • When selecting an individual, Gedcom Census will now check whether they already have a census event for the chosen year and ask whether the user is sure they want to go add another census entry for that year.
  • It is now possible to record information in the source note when using method 1 or citation note for method 2. There is a 'divider bar' beneath the source text window that can be dragged up to reveal the source note box and users can decide for themselves how to divide the space between the source text and the source note boxes.
  • There is now an option (on by default) which causes Gedcom Census to display a warning if the save census entry button is clicked without source text being entered.
  • There is now an option to specify a different character other than a tab for the Auto Text feature to use to separate columns.
  • There is now an option to set the Auto Text feature to create the Condition (as to marriage) column.
  • The File menu will now retain a list of the four most recent GEDCOM files opened in Gedcom Census making it much faster to swap between different files.
  • Fixed a minor issue where loading a new family history file sometimes reported that the file had been modified and needed to be reloaded.
  • If the file loaded into version 5.1 wasn't a GEDCOM file or contained no individuals then it became impossible to open up Gedcom Census as the file would be saved as the default file to open each time. This has now been corrected.
  • Fixed a problem where the Link/Note record wasn't being created in the source when using the 'Attach images to existing sources' screen.
