there a list somewhere that gives you a list of valid gedcom tags
The only document that can really do this accurately and completely is the GEDCOM spec. You can get a copy of this at http://www.lds.org. Its on there somewhere. Try doing a search for 'GEDCOM'. The spec. is pretty big though, and there are an enormous number of tags, and a great many different complex contexts of use - e.g. NOTE tags can have SOUR tags which in turn can have NOTE tags, and so on forever. If you're not using to reading this kind of spec, you may find it hard-going.

Here is a link to the official GEDCOM Spec:

I also posted under the 'Resources' in the Links section.

On the above page one finds GedChk.exe and ged55.gmr,txt for download. It is interesting and useful to look at this last file in a text editor (e.g. NoteTab, Notepad)

Seems the above links are broken. A quick Google shows it is hard to find a copy of the 5.5 spec where the link is not broken (did everyone get asked to remove the spec?), although at the time of writing the following link seemed to work http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~pmcbride ... 5gctoc.htm (HTML online copy).

Did see a copy of the 5.5.1 spec (draft) in PDF format at http://www.kk-software.fi/sw/ged551-5.pdf

Not found a later release yet.
