Tips: Event/Attribute Order in Reports
Posted: 26 Mar 2003 11:43
In the Individual Summary report, there is a section for 'Individual Events/Attributes'. The order in which events/attributes appear in this section (and in similar sections in other reports) is determined by the order of the events and attributes within the records themselves. If Burial appears before Occuption in John Smith's record, it will appear like that in a report for John Smith too.
In version 2.0, it wasn't possible to freely re-order Events and Attributes with respect to one another.
You could re-order multiple instances of Occupation fields, but you couldn't re-order an Occupation field and a Burial field. In 2.1 you can. It is up to you to decide which order you think makes most sense.
There are basically 3 ways to re-order events and attributes:
(1) You can get F.H. to re-order any events/attributes that are not in chronological order for all records in the file, using the new function 'Re-order Out-of-Sequence Data' on the Tools menu. This will re-order events/attributes, spouse, children and/or LDS ordinances throughout the file. You can ask to be allowed to confirm each record, or just let F.H. do it.
(2) You can re-order Events/Attributes manually, one record at a time, within the Property Dialog. To do this, go to the Event tab and click on the new 'List In Order' button (3rd button from the left, in the row of buttons below the Event/Attribute List). The effect of this button is to show you the Events/Attributes in the order in which they are stored in the record. Actually it is a little more complicated than that because the Event/Attribute tab shows you events/attrs not just from the current _Individual_ record (the ones with blue dots), but also Marriage, Divorce and other Events/Attributes from associated _Family_ records (the ones with red dots), and even Birth and Adoption events from associated child records (the ones with grey dots). You can only re-order Events/Attributes with respect to other Events/Attributes within the same record. So you can't move a blue-dotted Event/Attribute with respect to a red-dotted one or vice versa. To re-order events/attrs (where permitted) select the Event/Attribute you want to move, and click on the Move Up/Move Down buttons (4th and 5th from the right). The 'List in Order' button must be pressed for the Move Up/Move Down buttons to be usable.
(3) Finally, you can re-order events and attributes (with respect to one another) within the Records Window (or the All tab of the Property Dialog), by selecting the relevent tag and clicking on the Move Up/Move Down buttons in the top righthand corner of the list itself.
