Showing Full Names in Diagrams : Simon Orde

I recently was emailed by someone who said she wanted to display people's full names in diagrams, and asked how she could do this. By default, most Family Historian 'text schemes' show a person's 'preferred' name - the name they were usually known by followed by their surname. It occurred to me that others might also like to know how to use full names instead - hence this email.
First the basics. The text that appears in boxes in diagrams is determined by the currently selected 'text scheme'. To see a list of text schemes to choose from, open the Diagram Options dialog and click on the Text tab. At the top of this tab is a dropdown list labelled 'Schemes'. To use any of these schemes, you just select the one you want and click on the 'OK' button of the Diagram Options dialog (or 'Apply' if you prefer).
As I say, most of these schemes use the 'preferred' name. To show the full name, the easiest way is to find a scheme that shows the other information you want and then make a copy of it. Then modify the copy so that instead of using the preferred name it uses the full name. To do this, go back to the Text tab of the Diagram Options dialog (if you're not still there), and click on the 'New...' button near the top. Select the Text Scheme you want to copy (e.g. 'Name, Birth, Marr, Death & Places'). Give your scheme a meaningful name (e.g. 'Full Name, Birth, Marr, Death & Places') and press OK. Your new scheme is created and selected. Now - how to change it:
Making sure that your new scheme is the one shown against 'Scheme', click on each of the 6 items in the Box Type list in turn (actually you can skip the ones that don't have asterisks against them as they will all be blank). As you select each item in the Box Type list, starting with Default, the Template field below changes to show the template associated with each box type, for your text scheme. If there is no template, the template field will be blank. For each template in turn, look carefully for the occurrence of the text ': PREFERRED', and delete it wherever you see it. For example, you may see a line such as the following:
{if male & no spouses & duplicates} Sp. %FAM.WIFE>NAME: PREFERRED%
When you have deleted ': PREFERRED' this will now look like this:
{if male & no spouses & duplicates} Sp. %FAM.WIFE>NAME%
Do this carefully. Make sure you don't forget to delete the colon in front of 'PREFERRED'. And don't delete anything else (e.g. leave the closing % character).
When you've finished, press OK to use your new text scheme. You can repeat this exercise as often as you like, for all the text schemes you would like to modify.
