Tips for using Lists : Simon Orde

You can re-order items in the Named List pane.
If you click on a column heading in a Named List it will sort the list in the order of the column. But when you do this it doesn't actually re-order the underlying list. It just changes the order of items as displayed. Which means that the next time you look at the list they will revert to their previous order.
If you want to re-order the underlying list, get the list order the way you want it, and then click on 'Make Current List Order the Default' on the Lists menu. That will re-order the underlying list based on the current displayed order.
Incidentally, you can manually move around items in an list by clicking on the up and down arrows in the top right corner of the list. You must have one or more records selected when you do this. You still have to click on 'Make Current List Order the Default' when you've got the list the way you want it though.
Tip: Suppose you want to move one item from the bottom to the top (or vice versa) of a long list, using the Move arrows. Don't select the item you want to move and click Move Up dozens of times. Instead select all the items you want to move it past and click Move Down once, to move them down past the item you wished to move up. Selecting a long list of items is easy. Just click on the first and then press-and-hold the shift key while clicking on the last.
