Its the time of year when the what do you want for Christmas, stops being a question and starts being a loud shout.
All I want the 1851 Census index for Dorset and more hours in the day. The last week or so has been very busy. I have written another small Fix program for GEDCOM, this time for Generations 8. This can be downloaded via the Gedfix link of the FHUG site.
In addition I have been trying out a preview copy of Family Historian 2.1, now do not get all excited this is not the finished product, or even a close pre-release candidate, this is a first look at some of the new features, which MAY be available in the 2.1 version. What's in the Box?
Well not everything asked for in the wish lists is there, but that is not a surprise. However the start of the reporting has been completed and that looks like it is going to be excellent.
Family Group sheets are complete and I am very impressed with the flexibility of output, and the ability to fully customise what appears on the sheet. Currently the information can be printed, sent to MS Word (RTF) or saved as simple HTML format. The HTML is a direct copy of the RTF format so this is not an automatic web site generator. There is also a very useful individual summary report, which basically takes all the information for a single person and prints everything about them, including their parents and children. Again you can configure how much or how little detail you see and optionally include notes and sources. Once you have chosen all your options you can save the report as a custom report for use in the future. Also in this version is a Census report, listing the census information, and report to list all the notes, because of the way the selection of data is done it is very easy to change the Census report to a Christening, Baptism and Birth report for example, and the save it a a new custom report.
Selecting the people or families to print could not be easier, simply use the report menu option on the top with a person selected and the report will be started for a single person, then you can add additional people by using a query or by simply selecting them from the list shown, or from the Named Lists discussed below.
The selection and search has been much improved by the addition of a search box at the top of the records window and the ability to type a name to move down the list, similar to FTM, e.g. type Mullins, Rosemary and the records window jumps down to me, at least in my data file [grin].
This is very useful as is the new list builder. This allows you to build named lists from your data. For instance you can build a list of a mixture of people, family groups and sources you need to work on, or a list of people who are your 'key' family members. For instance I built 1 list containing people, I am printing trees for Christmas and another list of people I need to check out on the Free BMD.
I believe there are several more items which Simon hopes to add ready for the end of January, I must say I have been impressed with the stability of the pre-view version. Although I shall not be trusting my master data to it just yet.
So I think thats enough to let you all know what I have been up to and it just remains to say I can NOT
1. Let you have a copy !
2. Tell you if this that or the other will be in the next release. Only Simon knows that for sure.
It you want to leave comments, I have posted this newsletter to the FHUG site, so please feel free to leave a comment or two or put some messages in the forum.
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Ancestor rich new year!
Jane.
