V3-V4 Upgrade

** Stop Press ** V3->V4 Upgrade has been corrected and is now available from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/products/

There is an issue with the V3-V4 download upgrade released over the weekend. It has been temporarily withdrawn and Calico are working on it now. I will post here as soon as a solution is found.

The problem does not occur on all systems and does not affect the Trial version for V4.

My upgrade downloaded safely yesterday...and I wish I could say I was sitting here happily playing with it, but unfortunately I'm at work!

When I ran the setup file to try to install the upgrade I got a message saying 'Setup was unable to create the directory 'C:Windowssystem32'C:''.
IS that what other people have had too, or have others had different problems?

That is the problem that has been reported.

It looks like they have fixed the problem with the upgrade.

You should receive an e-mail providing instructions which basically tell you to download the fixed executable and run it.

Maybe someone can help. I purchased V3 Download last month specifically since V4 was going to be free. Unless I'm missing something I can't find that download anywhere. I've read all the pages about the trial which is pretty confusing. I have not received any type of email with a download link. I checked my Spam filter also. So...where do I get the upgrade? Thank You.

This is the message posted on the FH website. Looks like you will have to wait until mid May for the free upgrade.

'Customers who purchased a licence for the download version of version 3 since November 26th 2008, will be emailed a link for a free upgrade to version 4. For technical and logistical reasons, we regret that there will be a delay in sending out these emails. We hope to have all such emails sent out by May 15th. Customers in this situation are not recommended to download the free trial version of version 4, while waiting for their free upgrade - see Can Existing Users Install the 30-Day Trial? for details.'

I upgraded without any problems to the the trial version and then made the purchase.
I have not hit any of the problems which have been highlighted as far as I know. Should I download the corrected version, or leave things as they are?

The problem was purely in the installer rather than the program so if you have to program installed then there is no need to re-install.

Any idea how we download the upgrade from v3->v4 file again without going through the purchase pages? The above link sends you to the Kagi/Calico Pie purchase page.

You need to click on the link in the original e-mail that you received which had the subject Family Historian 4 Upgrade.

Obviously the download seems the most attractive financially. I have FH set up on two different PCs and transfer data between the two. Am I able to download the upgrade onto both computers with no problem? I'm assuming that the 'key' that I'm issued with counts for both PCs.

Martin.

All versions of FH can be installed on two computers as long as only one is in use at any given time.

I haven't received the email yet, though my order states I'm entitled to the v4 upgrade.
Has anyone else had the email? When should I expect to receive it?

To add insult to injury I registered for the download and in my exuberance to get FH version 4, I missed out a character from my email address. I only noticed this after I had made the order. I contacted Kagi who handle the downloads and told them of my error using a standard form on their website. Their automated response said that I should receive a reply in 4 to 7 days! D'oh - I should have ordered a CD - it would have been simpler...

I downloaded the trial version and overlaid my existing registered V3.1.

According to Calico it will install as a trial for 30 days.

This is pie in the sky as it unerringly keeps asking for a V4 serial number.

No wonder the upgrade was delayed for 6 months of naff release dates.

Without evaluation I will not upgrade due to the number of delays in issuing it...the developers must be ex Microsoft.

Now I am hunting around for my original install discs and serial number....if I do not find them then i will certainly buy another FH programme from a more reliable vendor.

But on the plus side I have really enjoyed using FH 3.1 as it handled the multimedia correctly and thus interfaced with my PhpGedview web site.

Anyone got any constructive ideas about this trial version install??

When it asks you to enter a key have you not tried not entering one? e.g. leaving it blank, or is there a 'don't enter the key right now' (or similar) option?

Oops: 'not tried not entering one?' should be 'tried not entering one?'

I tried every which way but and got the same behaviour.

After installation when launching i get the fancy splash screen of V4..then after a wile another box pops up.
along the top it says that the V3 key is invalid and to press Yes to enter a serial no if V4 has been purchased or press No to use as a 30 day trial or press Buy Now to get a V4 serial number.

Now....
1. there is NO Buy Now button.
2. Pressing No does NOT initiate the 30 day trial but instead has the same behaviour as pressing Yes...i.e. it steadfastly requests a valid V4 purchased serial number.

So there is NO 30 day trial as advertised.

As it was delayed for such a long period with no explanation which is very poor PR for any software developer, I wanted to put it though its paces before buying the upgrade or even waiting for a further corrected release.

This 30 day trial file has been incorrectly coded for sure.

I even uninstalled V3 as it was naffed by the trial version file and installed the trial version as a standalone, which if it is a trial should work....and got exactly the same behaviour.

I then edited the registry removing all references to FH and again reinstalled the trial version...and got the same behaviour.

Now I am desperately trying to find my original install CDs and am of course not a happy bunny at all.

I would recommend un-installing the trial. One of the reasons the Family-historian site suggests not installing the trail on a V3 system is due to the key issue, when you get to the key prompt pressing No should take you to the trial version. I would recommend contacting Calico's support desk if you are still having problems with Keys.

Panic over...found my 3.1.2 install discs.
Have contacted Calico Pie about trial not working as a trial.

CP website says
'If in the past you purchased version 3, and you now install the 30-day trial, it will automatically upgrade you - but as a trial version.'

I guess I will stay with V3 until I see more reports on V4 and monitor the bug fixes.

Thanks for all the comments

I Ordered my upgrade dwonload this monring (sat 16th May 09 09:24 UK time).

Got the email & it gave a link that resulted in an erro message of 'Internet Explorer cannot download getdl.php from sslrelay.com'.

I wish I had read these pages first, as I would have left my order for a another 48 hours.

Still. I have emailed 'support@family-historian.co.uk' with the error and I now understand better why this error might be occuring, pity the sslrelay site didn;t give out a better message to say the downloads were offline though.

I am sure Calico will be back to you shortly, but it will probably be Monday.

I would also simply try the link again as it's probably just a server error at the relay site.
