V4 Officially Here

Post by admin » 26 Apr 2009 08:43

The new version of Family Historian has been released for download from Calico Pie.  This is a major release and as such is a paid for upgrade.  There is an upgrade version available for V3 users, new users and V2 users will need to purchase the full version.

If you are interested to see a few very quick demos of some of the new features please check out the new V4 section in the Knowledge Base.

The new Focus Window adds a whole new way of looking at your data.

There is a galley to view your multimedia and many other new features,  with at least 22 items from the wish list, including the number one wish 'undo redo'.

The trial version and on-line upgrade can be downloaded from the family historian site : Family Historian Downloads

NOTE:  If you install the trial version over V3 it will upgrade it.  To subsequently install either the upgrade CD or upgrade download you will need to uninstall the trial and reinstall V3,  so make sure you have the V3.1 Key and install CD or exe available before you install the trial.[/url]

The boxed versions are expected to start shipping with in the next week or so.

I have just purchased and run the version 3 to 4 upgrade and it failed trying to setup a directory and rolled back.

Please be aware that when I re-run the v3 programme I had to re-enter the version 3 licence key.

I have e-mailed Family Historian support.

I have just downloaded and purchased the upgrade, which seems to have run completely smoothly. I am now working through the new features - it looks great to me so far!

Like Keith_r59 I have failed to upgrade for the same reasons.
I have also e-mailed FH support.

I went to the download page and have paid for my upgrade but I am still waiting for the email to confirm and tell me how to download - did anyone else have to wait? It has been over half an hour and I thought I would get it straight away

The download email should be straight away. Please check any spam folders etc. If you still don't have it in a couple of hours, please email support at family-historian.co.uk

Please bare with them as it is Sunday.

I did not understand the links to tr.im. After a few abortive attempts, I abandoned that and went to the Calico Pie site. There the upgrade downloaded with no problem and the installation was perfectly smooth (Windows XP Home edition Service Pack 3).
The Focus Window looks very thoughtfully designed and I look forward to a few hours learning the new features.

I have ordered a copy of the upgrade but couldn't wait until it arrived, so I downloaded the trial. It took a long time and would only load in small sections. I had to keep cancelling the download and then restart it and it would start again from the same place it had finished.

Eventually it installed successfully but when I tried to read the book Getting the most out of Family Historian using Adobe Reader 9.1 it crashed several times.

I then tried looking for solutions on the web and FireFox kept crashing.

I then uninstalled the program, but FireFox still crashed. I tried reinstalling FH 3.1 but was told I needed Version 2 which I cannot find.
I then used a Restore Point (Vista) hoping my FH would still be there. The shortcuts are there but not the program.
Help!!

I have managed to restore Family Historian 3.1.2 using a back up. What a relief.
I think I will now wait for my proper disc upgrade. I only hope it doesn't need the key from Version 2.

What a mess - now I can't open any version of Family Historian as it has taken the new registration code on board but not the program.

The programme loaded and is running. In the focus window, Individual, under born, the date is correct but where born the place sometimes appears upside down and sometimes correct.

Further to my previous post, Occupation, where born, married and died also are upside down. This effect only appears when I am not connected to the net. When connected they appear as normal. Help!

Can I say thank you to Jane for her 'Talkies' on how to carry out tasks in v4, on the Knowledge Base Wiki, everyone when they eventually get their copy of Family Historian v4 installed and working should first look at and listen to these helpful hints. Well done Jane.

You can still pay for a full version of V4. In your forum post I have posted a link to the V3.1 Trial for you.

Although I dont have my upgrade to V4 just yet, I have had a look at Jane's 'How To Talkies' and want to say a huge thank you to her. They are brilliant and will make my use of V4 so much easier.

Thank you Jane.

Kind regards - Linda

Just wondering why the download version at £36.74 including VAT is more expensive than the boxed version from, for example, TWR at £35.95 including postage. Not what would normally be expected.

I think the RRP for V4 boxed is £39.99, My History are therefore selling below RRP, Calico sell the Download version slightly cheaper than RRP, but more than the My History price which obviously is My History's option to sell at what ever price they like.

Jane,
I am sure that what you say is right. However, as My History, S&N and TWR are all selling for less than £36, there is not much incentive to buy the download version.
