Two record windows at the same time?

For copying information from one record to another, I often use the All tab of the Property box docked at the side of a relevant tree diagram.  I expand some or all of the field branches for the individual and use Ctrl-C to copy a whole branch, e.g. a Source citation with all of its sub-fields. I ca...

Customised tabs on Property Box

Neil,
I think I have the same OS as you (XP) and on my system the editable INDI Property Box file has the following address:
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily HistorianProperty BoxPB-INDI.fhdata
Are you sure that this is the file you are looking at with Notepad?

If you are using V4 you might also find my downloadable Fact Query useful: More Facts linked to a Source (V4 onwards):

Newspaper articles: One or many sources?

Of course I agree with Nick that it is good practice to minimize duplication of data, for all sorts of reasons, especially consistency.  I was merely suggesting that, in circumstances where a Citation is for a single Event, it can make sense to link media to the citation, especially if associated wi...

Newspaper articles: One or many sources?

pds said: not if it's attached directly to the event but I find that if one or more images are linked directly to an Event, the number of such media links is shown in the Media column of the Facts tab of the Property box, and the Show Media button can be used to view the image(s). The behaviour is d...

Exporting photos with records

Yes, this is one of the benefits of the Project structure in FH v4. You first need to use the Export GEDCOM File option, selecting the required records.  By default the new GEDCOM file (e.g. with name 'extract.ged') will be in the Public folder under your project folder.  If you move extract.ged to ...

Finding a specific individual

If the required Individual is shown on either the Ancestors or Descendants tab of the Focus window, the quickest way is to click on their magnifying glass. Otherwise you can click on the 'binoculars' Find Record button and type the required name. When you have found the Individual you want in the re...

Max, You can simply add another spouse to Joseph Parsons, i.e. Phoebe.  One way is to use the Individual Property box for Joseph, and click on the blank spouse tab next to the tab for Elizabeth, and then click to Add Spouse, linking to the existing record for Phoebe if there is one, or creating a ne...

Children of former marriage on diagram

If you have a diagram showing the man and his current wife, you can hold down the Ctrl key and click on both of them so they are both selected, and then click the button for an All Relatives Diagram.  You can then hide any boxes you don't want to see. If this isn't effective in your case, you can in...

Property window, set default tab to 'All'?

I'm on 4.0.2, and I agree with both PDS and Jane, above.  It seems to be a feature of the Property Box that in the All tab for an Individual you can double-click on any linked Individual and go to the All tab for that Individual, but if you double-click on a linked Family , you go to the Main tab fo...

Upgraded to v4 - Have I Been Done?

Phil,
Two significant enhancements added in v.4, but not mentioned above, are (i) Fact Queries and associated additional functions, and (ii) the built-in facility to Save as PDF which is especially useful to get a large tree diagram on to a single page.

PDF Files Saving in Portrait Format

Brian, I think I have been able to reproduce your problem. If I'm right, you need to get into Page Setup on FH's File menu, and you may have to open a diagram window to be able to do so.  Then set the Orientation to Portrait instead of Landscape.  It seems that FH cleverly keeps the Print Setup and ...

Jon,
I presume you've ruled out using the =GetParagraph function because that outputs each paragraph in a separate column?  It also has the benefit of excluding 'hidden' text (in double square brackets).

Can you not simply email the GEDCOM file itself (from your Project .fh_data folder) rather than an exported extract from it? In any case, when I try Export, all the Repository records are included OK.

Making a fresh start

Steve, I personally don't think it matters what record IDs my Sources have.  As far as I can see, Gedcom Census starts with a Source ID which is one greater than the highest-numbered Source ID in the GEDCOM file you open.  Thus I guess your 'old working file' has at least one source record including...

I would do this using the following three filters:

Code: Select all

Add unless %INDI.~FATH[1]>BIRT[1].DATE% is null
Add unless %INDI.~MOTH[1]>BIRT[1].DATE% is null
Exclude unless %INDI.BIRT[1].DATE% is null

Guidance on Census Events

I think Census is the only GEDCOM 5.5 standard event that can be used with either Individual or Family.  The only difference is in the type of record to which the event is attached. The huge disadvantage of using a Family census event is that it is not clear what is meant by 'family'.  In general no...

Chapter 4 of the manual for Family Historian version 4 explains how to Link to Faces ; chapter 10 of the FH version 3 manual explains the same process for what was then called Add Frames . According to the GEDCOM 5.5 Standard, to which Family Historian adheres very closely, it is not permitted for the EVEN tag to have a value parameter. Quote from the Standard under http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pmcbride/gedcom/55gcch2.htm#INDIVIDUAL_EVENT_STRUCTURE : The EVEN tag in this st...

I'm pretty sure that Family Historian does not itself provide a mechanism for exporting and importing Preferences, but it stores all such Preferences in the Windows Registry. This means that you can in theory save, and later restore, your current Preferences, but only if you are confident about modi...
