Name change is an event or can be, using Deed Poll.
That is what I do on my trees. Even if there is no actually a deed poll. For instance German Jews who were refugees from Hitler later had British names given them when serving in the British army.

I wanted a single dummy person at the bottom. One needs a single person as the root of any tree.
But once you have the tree you can deleted them from the diagram.

I had the same problem, although I was using TMG at the time. In the end I extracted most of my own relatives and retained the other Project as a research database, one of my four place studies. I found it inconvenient to have my personal tree swamped by names added from on-line databases.
