Re: Family Historian Sample Project

The sample project should have been installed with the program itself, when you put the program on the new PC. The default location would be in Documents>Family Historian Projects. Have you changed the location of your own projects and pointed FH to the new location? If so you need to move the sampl...

Re: Plugins and Version 7

I find it more than disconcerting that version 7 overlays the currently installed version 6. All previous upgrades of FH have worked in the same way. It does have the advantage that if you have made any customisations in V6 they will be retained (apart from possibly a very small number which would ...

Re: Information re a historic Birth Certificate application.

I too had wondered whether the certificate was needed in order to claim a pension, but I realised from your first post that he would have been only 48 at the time so ruled it out. A passport was my only other suggestion. However in answer to your question “would he have needed to register for it aro...

Re: Information re a historic Birth Certificate application.

I don't know whether there would still be any record of who the applicant was, but it seems unlikely. You could try emailing GRO to ask if they keep that kind of information. https://www.gov.uk/general-register-office Did your grandfather know who his parents were? If he did, and he ordered the cert...

If those are already in the Place field there is no need to repeat them in the Address field.

Re: Short and long titles for Birth Entries.

Gardengirl, the same problem emerged during the discussion in this topic in August:
https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic ... 32&t=17988
It was explained there, with reference to censuses, that you were confusing Method 1 and Method 2. The same principles apply to BMD certificates.

Re: Source Documents

Referring back to an earlier comment, you had a problem viewing a Media image of a document (Certificate/Census) at the same time as being able to enter details into the Source record Title, Text From Source, Notes, etc. Open the Media tab of the Source record where you can see the Certificate/Cens...

Re: Removing Flags in Bulk

Use Tools> Named Lists and Flags. Select an unwanted flag and click the Flag Status button. Untick Always include this flag in flag lists. (This will ensure that if a flag is unused it won't be listed, but I think you need to close and re-open FH for this to take effect.) Then use option3, Clear the...

Re: Multiple dates

One possibility is to use a Date Phrase to record the Julian and/or Hebew date, and in the 'interpreted as' field enter the equivalent Gregorian date. FH will then be able to use the Gregorian date for age calculations, but the Julian or Hebrew date will be displayed in brackets after the Gregorian ...

Yes, and to answer GeneSniper's question you can have a background picture, with various 'fade' levels. (Diagram Options>General tab>Background has a drop-down menu, the last of which is picture.)

Re: Source Documents

Another technique you might find useful when adding source citations to your existing facts is to copy and paste the citation. This doesn't use the Automatic Source Citation pane at all. (Personally I never use it!). Simply create the Source record and attach the image to it. Go to the first fact wh...

It depends how many facts you have already entered in FH which have been derived from each doument. For example if you have a marriage certificate have you recorded only the date and place of the marriage, or have you also recorded all the other facts which can be gleaned from it, such as the occupa...

Re: Relationship to Root

@Gowermick; I think you have mis-read the question. It is not about an uncle/aunt having married twice. It is about a direct ancestor having married twice. If you are descended from your grandfather by his first wife but he also had a child (let's say a son) by his second wife that son is your fathe...

Click the icon which is a green cirlce with a black triangle in it, in the Property Box Media tab toolbar . This will open the media file in your default viewer.

Alternatively click the cog wheel icon and select 'View Media for this Record in Media Window', to view it in the main FH media window.

Re: Add Person To Diag

Yes, it sounds as if what you are actually asking is to change the colour of the text in Female boxes, not in Spouse boxes. In terms of an FH diagram a 'Spouse' is anyone who marries into the family, but who is not a direct ancestor of the diagram root. So the ‘spouses’ in question are spouses of De...

To change the font colour in Spouse boxes use Diagram>Options>Boxes tab.
Select the Box Type condition, then the Spouse box type, click Edit Features and Text Colour, then click the coloured block to open the colour palette. Remember to tick Save as Default.

To add a flag to an individual, use the All tab of the individual's Property Box (or the Individuals tab of the Records window). Right-click on the individual's name and you will see a menu of options, one of which is Set Flag.

Re: fact display

The displays are different because the census fact is an event and the criminal fact is an attribute. Attributes have a value, which events do not have, and the value is what is displayed in the facts tab. I would suggest that the 'criminal' fact might be better defined as an event, as in "She ...

It depends how you have sorted the list. If you click on the heading of the first column ('Individual Records') it will sort them into alphabetical order. Clicking on other column headings changes the sort order accordingly.

Re: How to best link sources to each other?

sago_palm43 refers to 'information' but doesn't say whether there is an image involved. If there is an image it is sensible to use the 'splitter' approach and create a separate source record for each image. Like Helen, I record both the website where I found the image and also the original 'source ...

After the death event has been created I would add a note to the event manually in FH, saying that the certificate named both husbands. You can also amend the 'Text from source' in the Source record manually.
