Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
As explained before, you need to make use of the keywords in your Source Template definitions. The data in the grid will be specific to each individual so generally won't be relevant to a template. But the fields such as Place, Address, Reference ID, Other Info, Date, Country, SourceType, etc. are ...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
Just in case I wasn't too clear about the French Census... The Census always occurred at specific intervals; with the exception of the war years. So the Year of the census is always known. However; the specific date within the year seems to be fluid and determined by the commune/mayor, as evidenced ...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
Nick; Thanks for the explanation. I was just wondering if allowing the date to be blank in the template and then allowing it during data entry would work. That way one could enter the date a mayor of the city signed the census and would act much more like what AS appears to be expecting. Then, if on...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
I had look online. There is no published "Census date" for a census year that I could find. However; at the end of each French census, the Mayor of the commune does typically stamp and date the Census return for his commune. I suppose that could be used, but it would be different for each commune. T...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
Mike; I'm not quite sure how the Census record uses that field. Perhaps it is so that it sorts correctly in the list of facts/events? I used to do that in RM9, just to get that to happen. While I'm waiting to see what Nick says, I'll see if any of the folks on the French forums have a "fictitious" d...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
While you can put almost anything in the date field and add columns, the issue comes when saving the template.
When one tries to save the template when using just 1901 or blank, it refuses to do so.
However; if one uses a fictitious date of 1 January 1901, it will save.

Census Template Editor: French Census issues
Nick; Unlike many countries, there isn't a list of specific dates for the French census. The "Census Information: Date" field will not permit using just the year. AS will not proceed without a full date. Would this field cause issues for AS, if it were left blank or defaulted to the census year? I'v...

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Mike;
The new plugin (using Bing) is apparently working well.
It geocoded all 280 of my locations (mostly French) without missing any.
I was a bit surprised as I wasn't sure that it would recognize the names of some places in France that had eluded other programs.

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Mike; Just want to make sure I'm quite clear on one of your points, because you note that it is rather important. You use the term " local Census events for each household member". I haven't seen that particular description outside of the FHUG. By that term do you mean that each household member is ...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Thanks, Teresa. When I try a new piece of software, I'm very hesitant to start my data entry all over again. (for obvious reasons) Up to now, I hadn't heard of all that many who transitioned to FH7 from RM and the approach they took. So; I've been struggling with whether to start over or try to may ...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Adrian; While the issue of witnesses came up wrt. census entries, I've also use them in much the same fashion as you. There are times when a relative is a witness at a birth, marriage or death, but not a person in my family tree. Sometimes their presence supports a case I'm trying to make. A very go...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
"Jean001";
What you describe is very close to how I typically work on my genealogy.
However; you are the first on FH7 who has said as much.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of your posts on what works for you.
It will likely work for me also.

"RS3100";
I always meant to ask if anyone had heard whether CP intended to publish an updated book for FH7.
The FH6 one may cover some aspects, but I understood that FH7 made some important changes.

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Lorna; You must read minds. Yes; I am trying to see just how much I have to change to leverage the new (to me) features of FH7, while not totally destroying a workflow that has become comfortable for me. As noted to Jean, I am willing to change and even re-enter my data. My only concern is that, in ...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Jean; I really appreciate you sharing your experiences in starting to use FH. Before I started using RootsMagic, I also used TMG prior its demise. It's good to hear that the "out-of-the-box" settings didn't appear to have resulted in massive rework for you. That makes me feel MUCH better. I was sinc...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Thanks for the added explanation Mike. The tendency is for me to think in terms of how my old program did things and that is not always the right thing to do. I think part of my current issue is that the Import process has brought over and highlighted a lot of "idiosyncrasies" of RM9. That makes it ...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Nick; You would like to be told the correct way to do things, ... Now; I didn't actually say "correct", did I? I purposely stayed away from that word suspecting what the response would likely be. Of course there is no single "correct" way, but there is definitely at least one way that will keep most...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Gents; I'm hearing two apparently different views on the subject of witnesses from two very experienced users. On the one hand, AS doesn't typically include the roles and Nick explained why. On the other, based on Mikes response, it sounds as if some people do use them. I only wish that I had a loca...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
Being new to FH7 and the FHUG board, it was incredibly difficult to formulate a query that resulted in what I needed to find. Mike and Nick can attest to the number of times they recommended articles and pages that I was unable to locate on my own. While I knew, very clearly, what I hoped to find, i...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Nick;
Thank you for chiming in. It's good to know what is done in AS and that one can get by without the additional work of tagging roles. I assume that FH7 is able to formulate reports that make sense without one explicitly entering the roles.

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Mike; Thanks for the clear explanation. It helped. I can see that the "Witness" role and "{individual} appeared in the household of {principal} in the census {date} <at {address}> {place}." sentence was transferred from RM9. I note that the role is never actually included as a tag in the FH7 sentenc...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Mike; ***I think we posted at the same time, so please read the following with that in mind. What is described in "Census Witness Roles" is largely what I am ...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
"jbtapscott" and Mike; RootsMagic has the concept of shared "facts", which are quite commonly used for a census entry. I'm not exactly sure how to they ought come across into FH7. It seems that these are imported to FH7 as separate facts for individuals, but are linked to each other. When I double-c...

Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
In porting my data to FH7, I am going over my census "roles". It appears that FH7 comes with the option to label the head as "Head of household". However; the other options are "Resident" or "Witness". There must have been a good reason for making the default, "Witness". I'd like to create roles to ...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
With respect to the original post... I'm all too aware that some questions are of a distinctly "technical nature", but they are as valid a question as any other and deserve due consideration. Not everyone starts at quite the same point on the learning curve. If I may make a suggestion or two... I wa...
