Re: AS {SOURCETYPE} tag usage question
Nick; Guess I'm not doing a great job of try to explain what I'm trying to understand. Let me describe it a different way... My custom État Civil template looks at a {Source_Type} tag (type enum) to decide whether it is to generate a citation for a Birth, Marriage, Death record etc. It has the follo...

AS {SOURCETYPE} tag usage question
Is the {SOURCETYPE} tag the only field that AS uses as a "live" configuration parameter? Are there other fields that I should consider having in my "generic" template to correctly configure AS behaviour? [I understand that I need to map the available AS tags to my other template tags if I want to ha...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields
That's interesting, Teresa. If it at least works in areas in which I'm typing French transcriptions, then I can likely live with it. You know; RootsMagic is struggling with the diacritic issue. Seems that in FH7, they either work completely or are not used. In RM9, the behaviour seems to be very ran...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields
I'd just like to make sure I draw this thread back on topic. The issue is not so much whether one can or can't enter diacritics in some fashion, but rather the number of keystrokes to do it while trying to keep ones concentration on the task at hand. Fewer is better. My ONLY reason for posting about...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields
Actually; I believe there is a Mac equivalent of the "select Alt+130 and get é" practice, but it's never actually used, because the Mac has a built-in selection panel like FH7 uses. Would the shortcuts get passed through to Windows 11?... I don't know. My point was more that with the number of diacr...

Re: Having an issue getting full place name during Geocoding
"Gowermick";
Thank you. I may have a use for that technique of setting coordinates, since some places are not in the online geocoding database.

Re: Having an issue getting full place name during Geocoding
"Gowermick"; I actually said, " MacFamilyTree 10 will look at a place and provide a list of all the possibilities from which a user can select the correct one". I was just giving an example of another program that actually allows the user to choose amongst similar alternatives. I took a deeper look ...

Re: Having an issue getting full place name during Geocoding
"Gowermick"; I've seen programs use both approaches. MacFamilyTree 10 will look at a place and provide a list of all the possibilities from which a user can select the correct one. It then adds in the whole location and the coordinates. I'm still new to FH7, so I'm playing on a test database. While ...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields
Harold;
I've checked and found that one can get physically different language keyboards for the Mac, but I'm not so sure about multi-lingual ones. I'll have to see about this. Good to hear from someone who is using a multi-lingual keyboard.

Having an issue getting full place name during Geocoding
I am polishing up my imported place names in FH7. In my previous program, a geocoded name might be something like; Somme-Tourbe, Département de la Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France. When I do auto-geocoding in FH7, it does not complete the 2nd to 4th parts of the place-name. Is there a switch I have ...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields
Nick; That quote was not meant in the sense you may have taken it. I appreciate that you offer AS for free. I used to develop freeware programs and know that development time is "stolen" from other places in ones life. I mentioned it only because you've done such an excellent job of capturing many o...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields
Ok. Odd that nobody has seen this, given the responses so far.
By the way; do you know if a foreign keyboard would work with FH7 (and possibly with AS7)?
I do so many transcriptions and tend to touch-type, that this may also be a solution.

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields
Nick; If one presses and holds a key, the current version of FH7 pops up a panel with the diacritic keys for that letter (see attached). As I have over 800 French people in my project and do extensive transcriptions of the associated record, this is a key feature for me. (excuse the pun) While this ...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields
I am running FH7 on Windows 11 using Parallels, so the Mac-like shortcuts are not always available. FH7 has the capability to directly enter diacritics (without alt kludges) and so the support application AS should likely consider making this available as well. In French genealogy, diacritics are sp...

Unable to enter diacritics in fields
I do much of my research in French records and have found that AS 7.7.3 does not seem to allow the use of diacritics; especially in the Place field of the data entry screen. The associated FH7 program does allow diacritic entry. This means that there are some recorded places and names that AS cannot...

Re: Finding the index of the currently selected meta-field enumeration
"tatewise"; I would put it to you that templates themselves are not all that advanced a subject. They are so very similar to those in RootsMagic that the RootsMagic templates can be automatically converted and run well. I have absolutely no issues understanding and using templates themselves. What I...

Re: Finding the index of the currently selected meta-field enumeration
Mark;
Let me be quite clear on this... I was not in any way expecting Calico Pie to disclose their propietary data structure.
However; having made specific functions available, there is an implicit obligation to state how to determine what are valid parameters or at least where to find them.

Re: Finding the index of the currently selected meta-field enumeration
"tatewise"; While this is likely not the place to go into documentation improvements, I can give you a very limited example. The data is mostly accessed via Data References (derived from GEDCOM structures) and help with composing them is provided through many Data References Assistants (DRA). The mo...

Re: Finding the index of the currently selected meta-field enumeration
Thanks, "tatewise". I understand the implications of what you and Nick said. I am still developing a picture of roughly how FH7 works, finding what's available to a user and where to look for more information, and also how to use that info. It's an iterative process and will take some time. It appea...

Re: Finding the index of the currently selected meta-field enumeration
Thanks, Nick. I appreciate your confirming what I suspected. Having been in software engineering prior to retirement, you can imagine that I would find the existing documentation a little bit "frustrating". That said; FH7 seems to be a good program and I'm happy to do my best to work within the limi...

Re: Finding the index of the currently selected meta-field enumeration
"tatewise" Thank you for explaining. Based on exploring the SQL Query scenes, I'd come to a similar conclusion, but wanted to check with a more experienced user. It seems, then, that there is currently no way to create logic to relate an entry in one enumerated list to the corresponding entry in ano...

Does an enumeration type meta-field have an attribute that represents the numeric index of the current selection in the defined selection list? If so; a brief example would be appreciated.

Re: Source Template Definition
Thank you, so much, "tatewise! I had searched and couldn't find anything, but then I don't know my way around the board as you do. This is such a key code snippet and I will be using it as part of all my templates source names. I'll be following this thread in case you do find a more elegant method....
