Re: How does one manually transition sources from Lumper to Splitter?
Is this what you meant by working directly on the GEDCOM? I think that I may need to do this, because one Lumper source has many citation-specific portions. 1) create a blank new Splitter template and attach to an existing record containing the equivalent Lumper template. 2) Open the records window,...

Re: Having an issue getting full place name during Geocoding
Thanks, Mike. It was the option to use Bing that interests me.
I already have the required account.
Hopefully it is as good or better than the Google service.
Will give it a try.

Re: Having an issue getting full place name during Geocoding
Mike;
If I remember correctly, Google maps wanted a Credit Card number (even though it didn't use it) to get a code.
Does the substitute, Bing Maps, do the same?
Hopefully it doesn't.

Re: Does FH7 have a way of replacing characters in a text string?
Mike; Thanks for the quick reply. Yes; I was planning to cut and paste the filename, but I'm open to better solutions. While waiting, I think I found a solution that can be auto-generated and won't require "massaging". Apparently Windows and Macs are much less restrictive than they used to be and wi...

Nick;
I was only being careful to ensure that I hadn't overlooked some aspect. As noted, I am "starting" to get the feel for using AS, but haven't got all the workflow figured out.

Re: Does FH7 have a way of replacing characters in a text string?
Sorry, Mike. I'm still getting used to the names in FH7. I have an auto-generated "Record Title Format" that is composed of meta-field values from the template. Eg. <France__{Repository}__{Cote_microfilm}__({Commune}_{Event_Type}_{Registration_Date:YEAR})__{Image_no}_({Accession_Date})> {Cote_microf...

Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
Nick; I was taking a walk (where I do my best thinking) and realized that the proposed solution fully addresses the case when the record doesn't exist. However; when a record is already there, the template should use the pre-existing template values, just as the main body of AS7 does. This is a bit ...

Re: Native version for linux
As a Mac user, my opinion may come as a surprise. I would be careful what you wish for. I've seen RootsMagic try to create a Mac version by cross-compiling their Windows code and advertising it as a "native" Mac version. It really didn't turn out well and has been responsible for many fellow "refuge...

Re: Does FH7 have a way of replacing characters in a text string?
I wasn't aware that a plugin could supply additional functions that one could use from within a template to manipulate field contents. If it can, please tell me more. The generated template caption is currently created from template meta-fields, but some of those meta-field values have spaces. Space...

Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
Mike; I see what you are saying, but that approach assumes that all the persistent fields are fixed for a given repository. One couldn't represent a situation in which a repository had several collections without creating a separate repository for every collection. The originally proposed solution i...

Does FH7 have a way of replacing characters in a text string?
I am constructing a Caption using elements from my entered meta-fields and hope to also use it as a filename. However; some of the elements have one or more embedded spaces. That may not "play nice" with Windows or Mac. I looked at the available function-list and could not see any function to replac...

Re: Interesting use of AI
That's a bit scary, given some of the "politically incorrect" stuff they say that AI sometimes generates.
Since they "learn" from what they're fed as examples, let's hope that someone is overseeing what they use as their knowledge-base.

Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
Wonderful!
That would make it possible for one to do something in AS7 that is not exactly easy/possible in FH7 itself.

Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
Nick; When I made my Lumper templates, I defined the fields in the RM9 Template "Master Citation" based on them being invariant for a specific repository/website and not something where one would typically be able to get the info from the specific image being evaluated. So; perhaps the following scr...

Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
Nick; Thanks for the explanation/clarification. --- Side note: I've been trying to figure out how to switch to splitting, so I could use more of the available FH7 features and those of AS7. How does one manually transition sources from Lumper to Splitter?
I understand from going over old posts that some former RootsMagic users have managed to manually split their imported Lumper data. I'd be interested in knowing exactly how they did it. Can one also rename the populated template fields in some way without losing the contained data? I've tried the ex...

Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
"cwherman"; Your solution to the bibliographic years problem is exactly what I did in Roots Magic, because I really didn't like having multiple bibliographic references simply due to having accessed the source in several years. The issue is how to determine the span to set. It can't be done automati...

Re: Editing existing records in AS
But for all source types except Census, AS gives you the chance to retain existing citations, notes, images and witnesses so effectively it merges the new fact and the old one. Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
Thanks for the reply, Nick. For me, this is one of the perplexing issues with Splitting. I need to use some invariant template fields to be able to fully mimic EE-style citations, but those fields tend to have to be manually reentered over and over. Not sure, yet, how to efficiently address this in ...

Re: Editing existing records in AS
"jbtapscott"; I was hoping that one could bring in all the data for the existing record, edit it, and simply write it back as a new record. Right now, the new record doesn't show the existing data. That would achieve two things; editing without having to remember and retype much of what one had, plu...

For those who are using a Splitter-style, there can be a number of templated fields that are invariant over several entries. eg. those that reflect a common origin of the records

Editing existing records in AS
When I attempt to enter data for an existing person, AS asks if I want to replace it or create and additional record. Replacing it doesn't seem to show the existing data for the event, so I can't make minor changes to an existing record. Am I missing a feature of AS? Just a thought... I wonder if th...

Now I see. Doh! This Method 1 / Method 2 terminology is something unique to FH and something that still trips me up. Re: AS {SOURCETYPE} tag usage question
Nick;
Thank you. I see what you're doing. I'll copy the function in the AS template and that should do the correct mapping.
I was totally confused by the presence of the "Tools > Source > Source Identification" section in AS. What is it's intended purpose?
