Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
Nick; So Microsoft has no control over the standard at all any more? I used to work for a company that was a Microsoft-approved "development-house" and had access to all the tech docs. At that time everyone claimed it was open-source, but Microsoft was still very much in control. Anyways; that aspec...

Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
Nick; I was under the impression that DOCX was still controlled by Microsoft. At least it was when I worked with its "apartment model" on a source-code auto-documentation program a few years back. That said; anything would be better than just RTF. Perhaps we could then export hyperlinked footnotes e...

Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
I'm quite interested to see how this plays out, because RTF is not the greatest vehicle for use with the more advanced elements, like hyperlinks and graphics. I think that's why many programs now export directly to MSWord format. That said; I wish they would consider exporting to a an open standard ...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Curtis; As I noted; you and I are very much aligned on how we've tried to get around the "bibliography" issue and still appear to follow EE-Style. EE-style is based on shoe-horning everything into a book-citation paradigm and for some types of sources it takes a lot of "hand-waving" and references t...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
"cwherman";
I, too, have tried that approach...and to some extent, I think it works. In fact; I did that quite often in RootsMagic. However; in FH7 it is much more tricky to do the same thing and still look perfectly EE-like. I could go into the details, but it would be a bit of a long post.

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Mike; Thanks for your help. I read over the noted thread. I didn't see any mention of someone asking Calico Pie why they set it up as they have. That's a bit odd. Perhaps there was a good technical reason for the limitations imposed. All said and done; I don't think anything I say will change things...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Thanks Mike. In a Lumper world, it restricts some approaches one might use per Evidence Explained style. Without going into great detail; trying to use a Lumper/EE-Style and handle ARK links could be a bit messy, as ARKS are most often used as direct links to an item and need to be documented at a c...

Sorry Mike. There's a lot going on here and I dropped the ball.
It's good that the old examples are still mostly valid. Thanks.

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Mike;
Is there a typical use-case write-up of even the old plug-in? If not, perhaps a video was made?
While I always do backups, I just want to make sure I don't something silly in trying it the first few times.

What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
I remember hearing that this had been hashed out somewhere, but couldn't really find the forum thread. I believe I've managed to use citation-section meta-fields in the Short and Long Footnotes by using the correct referencing techniques. I've not been able to use citation-section meta-fields in the...

Thanks, Mike.
I'll put my check against that one. It would make sorely needed functions available and greatly shorten some constructs.

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Mike; Odd about the key length. Mine is definitely 64 characters, no more, no less. I think there's a piece missing in the instructions for obtaining a key. You have, "Key type: Basic / Windows Application". I have, "Key type: Basic / Dev/Test". I set mine to the type you have and it came back with ...

Re: Setting a word to sentence-case
Thanks, Mike;
It seems to come down to what we discussed a while ago.
FH7 is a slightly light string handling capabilities.
Not a big issue, but it can be an annoyance when one needs them.
Sort-of wish that FH7 had the ability to have add-on function-libraries written in LUA.
That would solve it all.

Setting a word to sentence-case
Does FH7 have a way to set just the initial character of a meta-field string to upper case and the rest to lower case?
RootsMagic has this and some templates that are converted to FH7 do not look "right" without it.

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Mike; I downloaded and started to set up the version you just posted. I have a Bing key code and have it entered. I'm finding that the "Plot Geocoder" field is set to disabled and one cannot select Bing Maps, because it flips back to disabled. [I still need to play with it more. If there is a video ...

Understood, Mike. Probably shouldn't have mentioned you specifically. Apologies.

Re: Use of <whole record> and Name source citations
Mike;
My point was that the regular reports (not the webpages) don't appear to use hyperlinked footnotes, so they aren't available to be extracted by a post-editing program like Scrivener.

Re: Use of <whole record> and Name source citations
Sarah;
Only Helen can say for sure what she used for her example.
I've not seen FH7 use hyperlinked footnotes in any test I've run on reports that typically contain footnotes.
I asked about it once and was told by an experienced member that it didn't at present.

Re: Use of <whole record> and Name source citations
Helen;
I'm looking forward to exploring what FH7 has in the way of research note and tasks capability. In my previous software, these were difficult to use and poorly explained. That, in turn, drove me to my current approach.

Yes. That appears to be correct. My real concern with also having citations to indirect sources in the database is that they hamper my ability to clearly see what is firm and what needs work.

Re: Use of <whole record> and Name source citations
Helen and Bill; Don't we want multiple citations for the same assertion? If we only have a single source for an assertion, then that weakens the case that it's correct. I'll even cite conflicting sources (with a note to explain how I've resolved the conflict) rather than not cite a source that conta...

Hyperlinked footnote references in reports
Writing programs that one might use for producing a final report often can recognize hyperlinked references to footnotes. Scrivener is an example of one such program. It is used by quite a few people to write their family stories based on the output from a genealogical program. Having already includ...

Mark;
In the end; neither approach precludes including interesting details.
We all use Family Historian for different purposes. Some of us may take a more academic approach than others.After all, it's family interest stories, not an academic paper or thesis.
