Re: Source & media naming
Helen; So; you rely on the FH7 "database" to keep track of those to whom an image pertains? I know that is what I did when using a digital asset management system for my photographs, but I'm a bit cautious about trusting FH7 to do the same as certified archiving software. Besides; I have other softw...

Re: Source & media naming
Mike; "Theoretically"; an true splitter would name each image according to the document and the page in the document, because it could then be used as support for any person. That would also guarantee a unique name for each image. However; one could then never locate an image involving a person base...

Re: Source & media naming
Helen; I appreciate you mentioning the new feature. Does FH 7.0.17.1 (an onward) determine files are the same just by examining the filenames or by comparing some form of "digital fingerprint" for the files? I think the latter is unlikely. I believe that FH7 also uses the filename as the caption, wh...

Re: Source & media naming
I may have been trying too hard to use all the "bells and whistles" of FH7. There may be a very simple solution to my source naming issue. My image records are currently stored with filenames that look like; Démoulin_(Ulysse)_[001]__1884-10-17_BIRT_[001_01-02].jpg The 1st instance of the person, the...

Re: Source & media naming
Mike; I've seen Heredis mess up ID numbers when I send a friend a GEDCOM. Thankfully, we both have stayed clear of that program ever since. I think I might just use the person ID after the name. Does the image import also assign a unique ID? It is possible for me to have two records of the same even...

Thanks, everyone
It sounds like this is still something I need to think about some more before committing.

Re: Source & media naming
I was thinking of trying to use something like I indicated in one of my posts, which might allow me to relate my source names to my image names. eg. Démoulin (Ulysse): 1884-10-17 Birth [Archives départementales de l'Oise: 3E259/2: 64-65] That is; The items in square brackets are; the repository: Cal...

Thanks, Helen.
If someone exports the data and imports again, are the id numbers retained or does it renumber?

Thank you, "lax_gen".
I thought about the ID numbers, but wondered how stable they are.

Re: Source & media naming
Mike; Could you give an example of your filenames and the corresponding media and source names? I believe I may have landed on a similar approach. However; I'd appreciate seeing an example of one that's has been kicked around a bit and is still working well. The last thing I need is something that d...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Sarah;
I haven't seen the initialism, "ASC", before. What does it represent?
My biggest concern about extreme optimization of data entry is that Calico Pie could do something that "breaks" it.
That is the main reason for me being careful that I don't get too "creative"... at least not right away.

Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
Sarah;
As you've probably guessed, I really like using Scrivener to post-process my genealogy reports and add my analysis.
So; any format that maintains linked footnotes will likely work and is better than the current RTF export.

Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
Sarah; I've also used Markdown. It imports perfectly into Scrivener, but there are not that many other packages that handle it. What are you using to process Markdown? While I like Markdown, because one can easily use either a text editor or a WYSIWYG markdown editor, I'm not sure how many people re...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Mike;
I understand what you are saying, but I want to tread carefully with that.
It may require a lot of planning to get things to work in concert, when juggling multiple repositories.
I will be setting up a dummy database and testing the water before jumping in with both feet.

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Sarah; I use the concept of a repository to describe the place where a group of records resides. So; there is one repository for each website, and for each physical place that data resides. I plan to store all the invariant data pertaining to that repository in its repository record. If I do need to...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Mike; I'm trying to better integrate the GetLabelledText function into my template logic. However; it looks as if it's great for returning text, but one can't test the return for a specific value and perform a selection based on the request. Am I missing a text function or a template logic technique...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Adrian; You're not missing anything. I tend to agree that the standards documents are anchored in the era of physical books. However; silly as it sounds, that is what the accepted citation standards expect one to do. I checked several of the mainstream ones again today. I expect, if I pushed the aut...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Mike;
I figure it out. To use this technique, one needs to be careful when setting up the field tags. I will likely cut a copy of some standard tags into all my repository notes fields by using auto-text. That should help avoid any errors.

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Thanks, Mike. I wonder that no one else has tried this. I see how this could be useful. I remember seeing an allusion to this possibility, when reading over the GEDCOM standard, but wasn't aware that FH7 allowed one to make use of it. From what I see in the documentation, it looks as if it ought to ...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Mike; I think you alluded to this before??? Maybe I didn't explain well enough. I am currently using any FH7 feature that I can to hold invariant data; repositories included. However; FH7 only allows adding fields that are defined in the GEDCOM standard. In a Lumper paradigm, there may be many other...

Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
Nick; My attempts to use the standard, to figure out why some software is not working, indicates some changes. I can't say when and by whom they were made. That said; further discussion likely won't change the solution that I think we both agree is needed; that of having some form of output file tha...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
I was just thinking again about how all these issues "go away", if one is using full Splitting. My only practical concern is about how to handle repetitive data-entry and how to make any required global changes to normally invariant template meta-fields. If I could properly address this concern, the...

Re: What meta-fields can be used in Footnotes and Bibliographies?
Peter; Somewhere in the thread there must be a mix-up in terminology. Heaven knows that every style manual uses terms a little differently. The real issue has nothing to do with what one calls the various elements, but rather what the various standards say they are supposed to contain, relative to w...

Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
Nick; I can tell you that there are very few programs that support every aspect of the DOCX standard. Having extensive experience with it, I can attest to it being VERY complex and it would be unlikely that all aspects would be supported in all programs. The de facto metric for judging full DOCX sup...
