Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
I asked about an objective definition of splitting . As always, it seems, the thread has devolved into something that is far from what I originally asked or intended. This is not the fault of any one person, but rather that there is an inclination to dissect each post and comment on something that a...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Nick; Again... I have NOT misinterpreted the standard. It is generally best if the source citation contains only information specific to the fact being cited and then points to the more general description of the source, defined in a SOURCE_RECORD What part of this are you not understanding? Are you...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Lorna; I read over your most recent post. It left me slightly confused and I "think" I know why. Are you are looking at a citation on an entry-by-entry basis? ... I would attach the relevant page-images and transcribe them in the citation-portion. This would not result in multiple records to change...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
My sincere apologies, Lorna. These topics get rather confusing after a while with the multiple responders chiming in.
I tried to amend the post when I noticed the error, but the forum wouldn't permit it.

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Helen; Much as I hate quoting Evidence Explained , to me, it makes one reasonable point about the subject of citation; "we cite what we see". Yes, but that's in the context of not citing an original parish register (say) when what we've actually seen is a derivative (be it image, or transcription)....

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Nick; I disagree with your interpretation of the standard and am not misunderstanding what I read. The phrase "generally best" has a very important meaning when used in a standard and would not have otherwise been included. Such a phrase is sometimes used when an explicit "should" or "shall" clause ...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Adrian; Thank you for your suggested definition. I recognize that practicalities may cause one to move along the Splitter<->Lumper spectrum for specific records. However; a spectrum only has meaning when its end-members are well defined. Based upon what I've seen so far, the GEDCOM standard expects ...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
"jbtapscott"; From the start, I essentially recognized that Splitting<->Lumping is a spectrum. But that was not the focus of the post. I am simply trying to figure out what is best for me. For me to make an informed decision, I needed to find an objective way of defining the "Splitter" end-member of...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Jean; I was VERY careful to not even imply that one way was "right" or "wrong". I am simply interested in how the term might be objectively defined; possibly based on what the GEDCOM standard supports. This was a logical approach, as much of what FH7 does is based on that standard. Being clear on th...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Lorna; While the overall topic is possibly confusing, some of what you stated is exactly what new users need to hear in order to not set themselves on a path that they may later want to reconsider. As you noted; the typical usage of FH has a lot of history behind it and some things changed significa...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Helen; Thank you. I understand what you are saying and actually noted the blurred lines between lumping and splitting in my post. I suppose that what was bothering me is that I had been told "Splitters" do not to put anything in the citation portion of a template. From what you've said, this is inco...

What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Before I get too far into my data re-entry as a "Splitter", I want to make sure I have an objective definition of "Splitter" and stick to it. With templating one has the ability to store data in the source and citation portions. That seems to have blurred the definition of what appeared to be two d...

Re: Displaying Current Information
"sbankscharles"; Like you, I had initially hoped to use AS to edit my extensive imported RM data. In retrospect, it's clear to me that AS was intended more for entering new data. As a fellow "refugee" from RM, I think that you just may find that the best way to edit old data from RM9 is to use your ...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
Helen; I note that you've used FH for quite a few years, so your caution in making assumptions about whether new FH users need help or advice is prudent. There just isn't enough information out there on which to base an opinion. Being new to FH7, I was asked to jot down and contribute my impressions...

Mike;
Was the noted error reported against your last improvement for v5.2.5?
I didn't get the same error and would like to know whether it is present in the last posted version.

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
You do realise we'll need a committee and several years to decide which example workflow ? Helen; I know you're trying to be somewhat humorous with your response. But... My first impressions of FH7 were; "Well it sounds like it should be a good tool, but where in the world do I start?" By your resp...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
One can find videos on how one "typically" uses FH7. However; when one comes from outside the FH community, it's REALLY difficult to know just where to look to see an example workflow. "Newbies" just aren't yet familiar enough with how to find their way around. The issue is compounded by the concept...

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Mike; Thank you for the very useful upgrade. I found that the added geocoder, Geoapify, in version 3 works very well. When I tried it with the "Fresnoy-en-Thelle" test-set, it worked exactly as I hoped. The "Status" panel is extremely useful and I was able to see when I had a valid location, as oppo...

Re: Switching tips? (RM->FH)
[If there is no Birth Event then FH cannot calculate & display the Age of the person and cannot perform any validity checks on their Age at Marriage or Death, or the Birth of children. Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums
It will be interesting to see how the reorganization works out. This is because a number of posts talked about posts being "too technical", but I don't think I've typically seen the poster define what they meant by the term. Just the bare-bones FH7 can be relatively complex to configure and use for ...

Re: Replacing Pre-Existing Facts as part of RE-DO using AS
Thanks, Lorna. I read over the article. Quite the thread... I've been a member of the "ControlledVocabulary" group for many years, so most of the discussion regarding keywords and the IPTC standard was pretty familiar. It's curious that the difference between how Macs and Windows use image metadata ...

Re: Replacing Pre-Existing Facts as part of RE-DO using AS
A similar technique could be achieved in a slightly different way. Copy all your Media files into the FH Project Media folder/subfolders. As you add each Source, link the Media files that are already within the FH Media folder. Then use the Check for Unlinked Media plugin to list all Media not yet ...

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Bill; I guess that's really a subjective judgement that no-one can make for another. The geocoding sites seem to work by looking at their database and seeing if there's a similar address for which they have coordinates. Those databases are always being augmented, so the quality of the results can ch...
