Re: Recording DNA matches in Family Historian
Bev, if you have just downloaded the files to the Downloads folder then double-click them to install into FH. Did that and it said it was good but there is no new fact or query that I can see. When I did it a 2nd time it told me there was already one there. I closed the project and reopened it twic...

Re: Recording DNA matches in Family Historian
Having just received Stephen and My DNA results on Ancestry and loading them into GedMatch, I wanted to record the information on my FH database. What I have come up with is a custom fact with a note field to contain the information I need and a Query to cross reference the records. The custom even...

Re: source template error message
As a lumper (for the most part), I have come to the conclusion that the level of lumping (or number of source records) for any given set of records is determined by the information contained in the bibliography. For better or worse, but mainly for consistency, I try to follow, Mill’s Evidence Expla...

Re: Individual as Source
oooooo oooooh - I was just reviewing the new note functionality in version 7. I can put ANYTHING into a note. I can link a person or a source or an image or even a citation.
This opens a world of possibilities in terms of correspondence logs.

Re: Individual as Source
to continue - Can I create a note shared by the correspondent and myself and detail the various points of contact in one note or create a separate shared note per conversation Sadly, I had a lot of correspondence by email back in 1999 with a lady no longer with us. I didn't save them locally and AOL...

Re: Individual as Source
Here is my quandary. I correspond back and forth with Jane Doe. Do I create a separate source for Doe, Jane - emails Doe, Jane - ancestry messages Doe, Jane - myheritage messages Doe, Jane - Family Tree DNA messages etc. I have trouble keeping track of where and when and how I last conversed. Do I c...

Re: Individual as Source
I like the "contact details" fact idea. That will help.
As for the source - I'm in the process of building sources and before I do it all wrong I thought I'd ask.

Individual as Source
Is there a way to link an Individual in the tree to the "author" of a letter, email, chat msg, etc.? Side question: in RootsMagic I could add weblinks where I recorded the person's website or pages on ancestry or tree on myheritage, etc. How/where do you record contact info both current address/phon...

Re: Custom Source Template ? Branching ?
Yes - on a previous message chain we talked about Source Template Definitions. I've been building there, importing to project, tweeking then syncing back to the ?master collection? I'll need to revisit your reply as I get more comfortable with FH. my footnote now reads: {ParishName} {Volume} {Period...

Associated Persons vs Witness vs ??
Often in my research I stumble on something where I think are A and B the same person? or brothers? or.... In TMG I created a custom event called ndlink and put A and B in as the two primary people with the possible relationship in the memo. This worked wonderfully well as I could click on the event...

Re: Custom Source Template ? Branching ?
That's really cool, but I have now idea how to implement it. Where can I read up on this? The "Getting the Most out of Family Historian 5" glosses over sourcing and the help files have not been that helpful. This looks like query language. Can that be incorporated into the source template definition...

Custom Source Template ? Branching ?
I have a custom source template in RootsMagic for Swedish parish books. One source per book. I might view a particular book on one of (at least) four websites or on microfilm via the Family History Library. In RootsMagic this is how it looks: [ParishName] [Volume] [Period]<, [Page]><; [Repository]>;...

Re: Source Citation: Text from Source vs. Notes
I guess my concern was that one of them appears elsewhere in this way or that one can be queried in this way.
I like the first one text=transcription and notes being for analysis.
Can I utilize the notes in some way to leverage them or print them elsewhere?

Re: source template error message
Thank you. I was afraid of that. I sort of agree that the usage of state and county in the bibliography seems silly because it is the same census form regardless of the state or county and, these days, we all access them online and not at some special archive or library where that distinction would ...

Source Citation: Text from Source vs. Notes
I frequently transcribe the source details. Do I put that in "Text from Source" or "Notes".
I don't understand why there are two such similar things and when to use one over the other.

Re: FH lack of color coding capability
I'm starting to see the possibilities. Those are some creative charts. One thing I'm struggling with in terms of place goes back to TMG where each place part was a separate field. This worked famously for my Swedish places which are typically: Orter (farm, village, house), Socken (Parish), Län (coun...

Re: FH lack of color coding capability
In FH I find I am starting to work more in Diagrams where I can use multiple highlights, it's not something RM users would feel natural with but I am becoming more accustomed to working that way as time goes on. Hi Jackson I enjoyed your video on this but I'm talking about searching the data for po...
