Re: How to sort results by surname when using Work with Data option?
I don't think anyone has suggested viewing the Places record list, selecting the place of interest and using View > Record Links. This allows sorting by surname, but doesn't provide as much context. The Where Used Records Link plugin provides more context but doesn't support the required sorting. N...

Re: How to sort results by surname when using Work with Data option?
You can use the following Excel equation to extract a surname at the end of a string, assuming that the name is in cell C3. To make it clearer I have inserted # - replace this with space. =RIGHT(C3,LEN(C3)-FIND(CHAR(134),SUBSTITUTE(C3," # ",CHAR(134),(LEN(C3)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(C3," # ","")))/LEN(" # ")...

Re: Query to exclude non relatives
The Oxford English Dictionary doesn't help - It defines Relative (noun) as - " a person connected by blood or marriage ". and Relation (noun) as - " a person who is connected by blood or marriage; a relative ". The Ancestor and Descendant filters that I use are in the Row / Relations tab of the FH Q...

Re: Query to exclude non relatives
Mike I have edited one of my ancestor queries and added the Relation column which is the =IsRelativeOf(FileRoot(),%INDI%) expression and the Relation 2 column which is the =IsTrue( RelationPool( FileRoot() ) = RelationPool( %INDI% ) ) expression. The extract below shows all the Deveraux it returns B...

Re: Query to exclude non relatives
Mike I have tested both of these on my FH project The Exclude unless... =IsRelativeOf( FileRoot(), %INDI% ) returns 786 records The Exclude unless... =IsTrue( RelationPool( FileRoot() ) = RelationPool( %INDI% ) ) is true returns 1041 of the 1126 people in my tree. I will compare the two result sets ...

Re: Adding selective GED data, advice please
Then you talk about adding just facts, which I assume is the usual manual process of adding Facts. What is not clear is where those fact details originate since you say above that there are "no Sources or Facts". Peter said that " this relative created the GED from Ancestry but seems to have used a...

Re: censuses - query with different values for an output column
I would be interested in a more detailed step-by-step instruction on how you do this FH <=> Excel. Looks very handy! Re: censuses - query with different values for an output column
Now if only we could get colour into the reultset There are some things FH can't do - or doesn't do very well! The queries in this thread are classic examples. The result set may provide the information asked for, but it is not very easy to interpret. In cases like this, I use an Excel spreadsheet....

FH showing Licence Expired
I was using FH last night, but when I tried to open it this morning, I got a Licence Expired message as below - I tried re-entering the activation code, but this gave the no instances available message.
Can anybody help or do I need to contact FH Support?

Using Relationship to Parents in queries
How do I add a "Relationship to Parents" column to a query (i.e. b= birth, a= adopted etc)
I can't find the field in the query "Fields" list, and I haven't been able to find the correct field name in the knowledge Base to be able to add it manually.

Re: Query to get just one line back
Calculating Anhnetafel numbers has more hidden gotcha's, and I don't think CP could hope to give an answer that everyone is happy with. Ahnentafel numbering only has "hidden gotcha's", as you term them, if you ignore the rules of application. Correct application has nothing to do with making people...

Re: Query to get just one line back
Given that FH takes account of non-biological relationships when calculating DNA relationships, it looks like an oversight that it ignores them when assigning Ahnentafel numbers. Having raised the support query regarding Ahnentafel, I have been having an ongoing email conversation with Calico Pie a...

Re: Query to get just one line back
We are getting way off topic here - Not sure whether I should have started a new Ahnentafel thread. This devil is going to continue to "advocate" on two grounds: What is a "direct line"? .......... What does it mean to "be an ancestor"? ................ the German word Ahnentafel in English - ( Ance...

Re: Query to get just one line back
In a lot of adoptions, the birth mother's identity is not known . So, the only "parents" listed will be the adoptive ones - who will, therefore, be Parental Family[1]! Unless you create a birth family with an unnamed parent? True - but that should not be necessary just to make Ahnentafel numbers wo...

Re: Query to get just one line back
Just to say I have just raised the Ahnentafel issue with FH Support - I have not got a ticket number yet . Ticket number is #296612 As I was drafting the message, I realised that I had overlooked the most problematic (and very common) adoption scenario! In a lot of adoptions, the birth mother's iden...

Re: Query to get just one line back
I didn't make it clear in my last post - I did test the re-order tool by making the adoptive parents the "1st Parent Family" - it didn't flag up this anachronism.

Re: Query to get just one line back
Lorna and I both believe that it is the 1st 'Parent family' of the Child (as shown in the All tab) that is assigned the Ahnentafel numbers and a=adopted, f=foster, and b=birth have no effect. On that you are correct - I was assuming that FH was smarter than it is! What I put in the Relationship box...

Re: Query to get just one line back
So in this case the birth mother Maisie would be assigned an Ahnentafel number and Ada not assigned a number. Peter, can you please confirm that as I think you are mistaken? Lorna is correct Mike - your assumption that Maisie is the birth mother is not right, in fact Maisie never had any children. ...

Re: Query to get just one line back
Mike's point was that the birth parents need to be listed before the non-birth parents. The order of the Parents families can be changed in the All tab. Looking at the All tab for an Ancestor who was adopted I can't find how to change the order of parents. I have found it!!!!! How does FH determine...

Re: Query to get just one line back
The Surname approach can be problematic in a couple of ways, If the Surname is common (e.g. Smith) there could be other male Smiths in the family tree who are not in the paternal line you want, and who would not be filtered out by Relationship includes "father" There is also another scenario involvi...
