I am currently replacing 20 to 30 FMP census transcript images (jpegs). The originals are snipped screenshots, used because the FMP "Print" option only offered hard copy or pdf. However I now have OneNote - and can print to that and then create a jpeg from there, which gives a "cleaner" image, and w...

Re: Version 7.0.19 Install Issue with directory junctions and one drive
It is impossible to build an installer to cover every eventuality. It only has to cover one eventuality - i.e. A failure of the upgrade to install --- for whatever reason . And it only needs to take one action -- Roll back to the condition before the install started. In this case the installer iden...

Re: Version 7.0.19 Install Issue with junctions
Have you tried downloading the program direct and reinstalling? The program downloaded from the install7 page is exactly the same program the upgrade process uses so there should be no problems. Yes I have - I made this post mainly to alert others using Directory Junctions, not as a cry for help. M...

Version 7.0.19 Install Issue with directory junctions and one drive
I posted this as a reply to the Version 7.0.19 upgrade alert post, but thought it might be missed there, therefore this new post. This warning is for anyone synchronising FH using mklink Directory Junctions I used the FH "Check for updates" route to install the upgrade to version 7.0.19 - it failed ...

Re: Showing Source Citation Media Filenames in Queries
%INDI.CENS[year=1841].SOUR[1].OBJE[1]>FILE[1].TITL% will list citation media titles. Actually, it doesn't! It lists the "Source" linked media (using OBJE(1), OBJE(2) etc.) but doesn't find media linked to a citation. The image below shows the "Source " media as items 1 and 2 and the "Citation media...

Re: Showing Source Citation Media Filenames in Queries
Peter, you mentioned FindMyPast initially and then referred to FTM which I presume is a typo for FMP. Quite right! I have amended my post! I would expect the third person specific transcript is just a repeated extract from the second household transcript. So I suspect it does not add any useful inf...

Showing Source Citation Media Filenames in Queries
Having used AS for BMD sources I am now starting to use it to generate census sources from media downloaded from Find My Past. Although the AS aspect is not really relevant to my questions. For each persons census record FTM FMP provides three related data sets. The first two are - a) an Image of th...

Re: Synchronisation between two PC
Philip, You mention Backup files not showing on the second computer - If you want to sync files between both computers they have to be saved in the OneDrive folder, so you have to make sure that backup files are saved there. Even then, depending upon the speed of your internet connection and the siz...

Re: Synchronisation between two PC
Have you read the Knowledge base section on setting up directory junctions ( https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/synchronizing-family-historian-settings-using-directory-junctions/ )? This explains the need for, and how to set up Directory Junctions. Which I describe briefly below - On a Windows PC, FH...

Re: Amended GRO birth record
It's easy to forget that Jelv is referring to events in the 1960's - no computers then - BMD indexes were printed in books, amendments, cross references and late registrations all had to be added by hand. Late registrations were usually entered twice - printed in the volume for the year and quarter ...

Re: Amended GRO birth record
Thanks for that clarification - it explains a lot, but I'm still puzzled as to why jelv can't find the new name in the index. I suspect ordering the certificate may be the best way to work it out. As I said in a previous post, adoption is a completely different event to birth, it has it's own certi...

Re: Amended GRO birth record
Yet, in the mid-70s it was still possible for a 'private' adoption to be arranged via family connections and rubber stamped by the relevant authorities... The birth mother may not have known who the adoptive parents were, but her sister and brother-in-law did; and the adoptive parents knew who the ...

Re: Amended GRO birth record
Presumably when programmes such as Long Lost Families pull their rabbit out the hat with “our intermediaries have located the adoption record”, they are referring to approved social workers who have privileged access to the records not granted to lowly TV researchers? That is right, and for good re...

Re: Amended GRO birth record
Would 4 a 825 0465/S using the Strikeout S Rich Text format be a better representation? Thanks, that's what I'm going with. I think that is the right option - as it most closely replicates the actual entry in the index. However, I think that you need to research this "correction" in more depth. It ...

Are you aware of the Windows Explorer "Pin to Quick access" facility? In Windows Explorer, If you right click on a folder there is a "Pin to Quick access" option in the drop down list, it pins a link to the folder in the "Pinned" SECTION at the top of the left hand pane. It doesn't solve this proble...

Re: Family historian and OneDrive, advice required.
Actually I believe it is relevant - I did go on to say that, even if you only using a single device, there is an advantage in using directory junctions with OneDrive. When I first started using FH with OneDrive, I too had a few glitches, which I thought were teething troubles setting up OneDrive. I ...

Re: Family historian and OneDrive, advice required.
John, I wonder if that process of uninstalling and reinstalling OneDrive is part of the problem. I presume the corruptions never occur when OneDrive is not installed. Are you using OneDrive to synchronise FH on two or more devices? (e.g. a PC and a Laptop). If so I recommend you look at the Knowled...

Re: censuses - query with different values for an output column
I use a custom fact "Electoral Roll" as I don't feel that Residence is quite right. The main thing is to record the location and date. For the date I use the date the register was signed off by the returning officer - in the UK often the October prior to the year of the Register. I believe that "Re...

Re: How to sort results by surname when using Work with Data option?
You can use the following Excel equation to extract a surname at the end of a string, =RIGHT(C3,LEN(C3)-FIND(CHAR(134),SUBSTITUTE(C3," # ",CHAR(134),(LEN(C3)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(C3," # ","")))/LEN(" # ")))) In an earlier post I gave the above equation for stripping the Surname in Excel - but there is a ...

Re: Query to exclude non relatives
Thanks Lorna, You are spot on ! All four of the ancestors whose spouses are missing from the report are "end of their line" - I haven't found parents for any of them yet, so they don't yet qualify as descendants. I tested by giving Harriet Claxton an unnamed father and William Black then showed on t...

Re: Query to exclude non relatives
Not that it really matters - but I still don't understand why, when spouses were turned on in the Descendant filter, William Black didn't display but William Farmer did - In the queries that show them both, they are both listed as great (2x) grandmother's husband, so their relationship to the "Root"...

I fear this discussion makes it seem as if the topic it much more complicated than it is. I can only refer again to the standard All Relatives query which is easy to understand and does the job without any need to create a custom query. Sorry, senior moment, I have been misinterpreting "All Relativ...

Re: Query to exclude non relatives
Lorna, Sorry, perhaps I should have deleted the third filter line before adding the image! If you look closely, you will see that the "IsRelativeOf" filter line is dimmed out, because it is disabled - achieved by right clicking on the filter and clicking on the dropdown. This is a very useful facili...
