Re: Research notes, to do and hash tags
Mark and Helen - Seeing the column and row definitions/qualifiers would be awesome. Still trying to get my head around queries and I learn better with examples. Below is my template for Tasks. I’m not sure that the functionality of the backward link, especially in tasks, is important or high on my p...

Re: Research notes, to do and hash tags
Good to know that it might not all be user error with the query :). In a perfect world, I would be able to select a repository (similar to selecting the surname in Helen’s video) and then have the Query provide a list of all “non-closed” Tasks linked to the selected repository. e.g. something I coul...

Re: Research notes, to do and hash tags
I have created draft templates for my Tasks and Research Log using auto text and playing with them to get them in final form and determine best way to use them in FH. One of the things I would like to do is be able to create a list of all the tasks for a given Repository and Tasks and Research Logs ...

Re: Freeform citation in V7
Moving from RM7 to FH7. I used a lot of layered citations (yes a semicolon lover too). I locate a significant number of information from non-indexed digital files on FamilySearch, so a typical citation for me would look like: Footnote: Buena Vista County, Iowa, Deed Record vol. 9: 602, Hannah Aherin...

Re: Research notes, to do and hash tags
Thanks MIke - it's not that the information is not there - the challenge is where to find it and what I am learning is I need to review all three (Help, KB and the Forum) before running in too many circles. I have success fully created a couple of custom templates for Research Logs and Tasks and eve...

Re: Research notes, to do and hash tags
Mark - Good to know about flexibility to change the type field - allows one to develop a system to create specific types of Research Notes or even subcategories of the existing 3 types. Does FH allow to change the "default format" of the predefined types. For example I like to use a 4 column table f...

Re: Research notes, to do and hash tags
I have discovered that is you double click on the text field of an existing Research Note, a new edit window opens and the format/command task bar is available.

Re: Research notes, to do and hash tags
Transitioning from RM7 to FH7 and just getting up to speed with the Research Notes structure in FH vs the Task and Research Log in RM which I used extensively. One of the features I like about FH is the ability to link the notes to multiple other records. I am trying to understand the difference bet...

Re: Import RM to do lists?
Thanks Mark and Mike, I was just curious about the Record IDs - they did not seem to be assigned alphabetically or chronologically so just curious - I'm sure they exist in RM, they are just not visible in any of the user interface screens so they were new to me. I'm not bothered by the difference in...

Re: Import RM to do lists?
I ran the the plug-in and worked great. Thank you Mark for all your effort!! Now that the records are in FH7 - I have a couple of questions regarding FH7 structure. The record lists shows a "Record Id" for each record. How is this Id number determined/generated and is there any significance to it? I...

Re: Import RM to do lists?
Thanks Mark. I was trying to copy and paste the clip in and also tried using the image icon on the top of text input box. I was thinking paste into, not attach to!! Here is a clip from a RM research log and a clip with the same items pasted into the FH research log, utilizing some of the word proces...

Re: Import RM to do lists?
Mark, I tried the plug-in and got the same result, the only items that imported to FH were the couple of General Tasks. Not sure if this will help as you work on your plug-in, but I can confirm that any task added/created from the List>To-Do List>Add task is by default a general task. Selecting Add ...

Re: Import RM to do lists?
I am also in the process of moving from RM7 to FH7 and used the RM Tasks and Research Logs extensively. How RM was changing the structure of Tasks and Research logs in the upgrade to RM8 is one of the reasons I am leaving RM. FH7 is one (if not the only) software that treats research logs similar to...

Re: Map Life Facts for farms
Thanks Mike, Working with Places and Addresses is one of the best articles I have seen on this issue. I don't know who has "editing power" for the knowledge base, but I think your last two paragraphs about the impact on the Auto Complete function and the impact of Reports and Diagrams would be great...

Re: Lat and Long for address?
Helen & Mike. Thanks for your insights.
Am now seriously considering entering the entire address in the place field for mapping purposes which will result in at least six, comma separated elements. Will definitely need to sharpen my “comma counting” skills!

Re: Map Life Facts for farms
I reviewed the Working with Places and Addresses and created another couple of trial projects to play around with using the place record only for mapping. First, I just took several farm locations and added all the info to the place field and then entered the Long/Lat info. They mapped fine. It appe...

Re: Map Life Facts for farms
Thanks Mike, Looks like I had it backwards, I thought Map Life Facts was a plug-in that would allow me to use the mapping feature to map at an address (or specific longitude/latitude) level if I provided the coordinates, not pull the coordinates into the FH7 for a specific location. The address syst...

Re: Lat and Long for address?
Not sure if this is the thread for this - but I see "location elements" and "leading commas" being discussed. In prep for my move from RM to FH7, I am cleaning up my places/address to make sure they are consistent with my four element strategy: town, county, state/province, country before transferri...

Map Life Facts for farms
Looking for help/direction on move from RM7 to FH7. I have a number of ancestors who were farmers and the farms would be 10-15 miles from the nearest town. My entry for places is four element town,count, state, county and I have entered place details/address for the specific location of the farm. Si...

Re: Rootsmagic->Family Historian
Thanks Helen and Mike. Will add the “how to do it” to my toolbox. It seamed like I was always having to customize the fact sentences at the person level in RM because I am often dealing with events on rural farms where there is no specific address and the nearest town is often 10-15 miles away and m...

Re: Rootsmagic->Family Historian
Thanks all - Your explanation of the correlation of the FH value field to RM description field was very helpful. I used the description field most of the time in RM - mainly as a way to get more info into the fact sentence. Knowing that I will loose the value field in a merge/clean up and that a des...

Re: Rootsmagic->Family Historian
I am trying to get a feel for how much re-work may be required with a move from RM to FH and am looking at facts. In RM, there is only a fact field, and the fact can be anything true user wants it to be, an event, an attribute, a world event, etc. I used a number of custom facts in RM and it appears...

Re: Duplicate Media Records
I am RM user looking at FH. This issue first came to my attention when I completed a GEDCOM transfer with the option to set up media files inside the project folder and was blown away by the duplication of images in the new media file created by FH. I completed a second transfer to maintain links to...

Re: Import RootsMagic 7 into Family Historian 7
OK - Need some help/advice to make sure I am understanding the media link transfer. I set up a new test project and imported the Gedcom file with the media box unchecked and was successful in getting the media links/file paths in FH7 to my existing media file. However, I was surprised when I opened ...
