Re: Quaker records in FH
Thank-you for your useful input. I suspect that Generic might be simplest and all that’s needed, plus a bit of manual entry for “extras”.

Quaker records in FH
I'm a long-term family historian but relatively knew to Family Historian. I've been spending time recently going over my standard sources (i.e. parish registers, certificates, census) and using Ancestral Sources to enter details and images. Now I've come to the Quaker line of my family and I was won...

Re: 1921 UK Census AS Source Template
Thanks. I hadn’t fully appreciated the technicalities. Leave it as it is - it’s not a major problem, just something I noticed wasn’t quite right (to my mind).

Re: Citation Properties Dialogue (Filtering/Preferences)
I was glad to see this post as it is something I’ve been wondering. As a recent convert, I’ve been updating the more common sources via AS, but now I’m adding more as above, and found the same frustrations (too many clicks). I will also try Mike’s suggestions - thanks.

Re: 1921 UK Census AS Source Template
I’ve also downloaded it (the first time I’ve done this, took a couple of goes …) and used it successfully. Thanks. One piece of feedback - could the autotext template have a heading Marriage or Orphanhood, as on the original form, rather than simply Marriage as now?

Re: Entering census age & anomalies
Thanks. That's helpful to know. My instinct is certainly to record the data as it is given (and I always would in a transcript). It is a good point about deleting it if you know it is incredibly wrong afterwards. I just wasn't sure what was going on 'in the background'.

Entering census age & anomalies
I'm using Ancestral Sources to enter census details. How do people deal with the wide variation of ages given? What I am tending to do is allow AS to keep their "real" age if it is more than +/-1 year, and entering the age given on the census in the 'text' transcription. I certainly do this for 1841...

Re: Occupations (standardising and grouping)
Thank-you for two excellent responses. Putting a generic name first is a good idea. I have to confess I had not seen or explored the 'Work with Data' option here, although I have done something similar with place names. There is so much to find and learn in this program, isn't there?

Occupations (standardising and grouping)
I am quite proud of myself for working out how to make my own query to find all the different occupations in my database. I appreciate the need to have a standardised form of entry - so agricultural labourer rather than ag. lab, AL, etc. But is there any way of keeping a person's specific occupation...

Re: Finding incorrectly placed locations in map
Thanks, I have dragged and dropped a few. I really wondered if there was anything that might make glaring errors stand out. I did try sorting by lat/long, but then you get places in Canada mixed in with Scotland. I will wait for a rainy afternoon and go through them a bit at a time ...

Finding incorrectly placed locations in map
Is there a way to find places that have been incorrectly geocoded? I have gone through all my places since I first started using FH and standardised how I have written them. This seems to work for most places. But I have just set a map to show all my ancestors birthplaces, and noticed a few strange ...

Re: Dade registers, multiple relatives
Thank-you for your input. You make a good point that the grandparents, etc were not actually (necessarily) present, so perhaps just include them in the transcript. (you are right in the value of such records - I didn't make much progress on this line for many years - Wilson, vague date of birth, out...

Dade registers, multiple relatives
Any good advice on how to deal with Dade registers where the grandparents (and more!) are often named in association with a baptism? I have made a new 'Associated individual' type as 'Relative', but I wonder if there is any advice, or a better way to do this? Similarly, I'm going to be tackling Quak...

Re: Hiding occupations
Excellent answers, thank-you. Yes, I thought that I would need to think about what I entered in AS - I'm fairly new to FH and AS, so I am learning some of the ins and outs, plus how to make it do what I want. When I say that I would like to make an occupation, e.g. scholar as less important, it is b...

Hiding occupations
Is there any way to hide an occupation? My specific example is my ancestor, who, on her death certificate, has her occupation as "Widow of James Wilson, joiner" which I want to keep in the record, but not have showing up as her occupation! Also, is there a way to order occupations by preference? I k...

Repository - Custom ID
Hopefully, a quick question.
What is 'Custom ID' on the list of repositories and how would you use it?

Re: Research notes, to do and hash tags
Thank-you.
So a named list for each archive/geographical area would be best? I suppose that makes sense rather than fiddling around with hash tags etc and I won’t have that many! I will have a bit more of a play with the sample project again to get a feel for it.

Research notes, to do and hash tags
I've read several threads with similar questions, but haven't quite found the answers I need, so forgive me if I've missed them! I can see that it is useful to use a named research note (log?) for a specific person so that when I have searched, say, 1841 for all Thomas Burrows in Manchester, I can a...

Advice for place names from existing database
I'm on a trial with FH7 and impressed so far - seriously considering moving from my current outdated software, despite the learning curve. I have always entered my place names using the Chapman County Code for UK/IRL counties (LAN = Lancashire, MDX = Middlesex, etc), and usually enter as town/parish...
