Re: Recording the sources for a relationship.
This was one of my main problems/complaints with FH when I moved from TMG. Documenting relationships is literally the most important aspect of genealogy and it is baffling that GEDCOM doesn't explicitly allow for this. That said, Mike has linked to a good article, and this is exactly the method I am...

Re: Can FH tell the differance between no surname and unknown surname
I think one takeaway is that the GEDCOM standard is not well suited for the many quirks and intricacies of international naming traditions. Like most people from Norway, I also use the surname field to record patronyms and toponyms. I go a step further and use an alternate name for each and every sp...

Re: Patronymics (& Matronymics/metronymics)
I am not 100% sure what you mean, but it is definitely clear that the GEDCOM standard falls short on many fronts. Unfortunately, within FH we are forced to work within these constraints, and so any method to record (and reference and search) this data inherits these constraints. I used to work with ...

Re: Patronymics (& Matronymics/metronymics)
Not responding to anyone in particular, just sort of a general commentary; but the majority of my ancestors are Norwegian as well, and I approach names in a source-driven way. Meaning that I record the name as it actually is written in the source. I then choose a "normalized" way to record it for pu...

Re: Activation required unexpectedly
This just happened to me as well today after using FH7 for over a year. I have not changed anything about my computer, just today out of the blue I was asked to activate my installation. It was easily accomplished by simply logging in with my account, but it didn't give any indication why it happene...

Re: Spanish Naming and Surnaming
A long time ago when my old genealogy program went defunct (TMG) I played around a little with an open-source cross-platform solution called GRAMPS. And I really liked the program but it ultimately lacked so many of the features I want that I left it for FH. One of the things that struck me though i...

Re: Questions from TMG Refugee
Carl, I am a TMG refugee as well, and I have been using FH for well over a year now. Before that I used TMG for over a decade, and I have to say that of the countless programs I've tried FH has by far been the best, at least for me. Data integrity was perhaps the most important to me and the import ...

Re: Custom Template Collections
Yes, I totally misunderstood the use case for Mark's plugin. I downloaded and ran it and the behavior was exactly what I was looking for. I now have 4 template collections, with my own two included as expected.
Thanks again for helping me work through this!
Ken.

Re: Custom Template Collections
Thank you both! I just thought it was strange that I clearly have source templates from 4 source template collections in my project (Essentials, Advanced, Private, and Private (TMG)), yet only 2 of these (Essentials and Advanced) show up in the list of collections in screenshot 3. Not a deal breaker...

Re: Custom Template Collections
Thank you Mike, you're right. I'm going to try and support my question with some screenshots below. When I imported my data from TMG I put all the templates from that import into its own template collection called "<MyName> TMG" and then I added another template collection for new data input after t...

Custom Template Collections
I now finally have a wonderfully working database after spending a little over a year now doing various imports from TMG and learning the in an outs of the program. However, I did notice one thing that bugs me a little: I have two custom template collections one called "Private (TMG Import)" and ano...

Re: Should I use Date Phrases?
Thank you Lorna, that's reassuring to hear. Yes, every single Date Phrase has an associated Interpreted Date and in the few cases where interpreting a date was impossible; I estimated one and made a note in the note field for the event. Admittedly, it does look a little ugly in charts and so perhaps...

Should I use Date Phrases?
I do quite a bit of research in Norway and in church records there the use of "Church Dates" are quite common. So we can have dates like "Easter Sunday" or "Pentecost", etc. In fact, every day of the year can be specified in this manner by referencing it to a named Sunday in the church calendar. Sin...

Re: TMG Imported Citation Detail
OK, so I've worked a few days on this now, and come up with a solution that I think will work for me for now. For me the "merge" feature for the source templates seemed to work the best and be the one that presented the smallest opportunity for me to destroy data. So what I did is that I consolidate...

Re: TMG Imported Citation Detail
Thank you both for your input. I am going to play around with it over the holidays; cleanup some of the fields used in TMG, and see if the import of the sources improve. I have played around with the "Change source template" plugin ColeValleyGirl mentioned and it didn't work for me, but maybe after ...

Re: TMG Imported Citation Detail
Thank you once again! That's perfect. That resolves the Repository issue. I am going to dare another question: as an exercise in trying to learn the program, I read a bunch of articles and I customized my own list of source templates to be in line with my TMG data and also fit my needs. But I am sti...

Re: TMG Imported Citation Detail
I have done a few imports now and it is clear that the process is much much improved. I do have some questions though, and not sure if I should post here or start new thread? Anyway, the template sources created by the import do not have any repository fields. The repositories are imported (and appe...

Re: TMG Imported Citation Detail
Thank you, yes, I think that's what I'll do: start a new project with the imported data using 7.09 and play around with that for a bit and revert if it doesn't work out. I did notice that FH didn't allow newlines in the "Where within source" field. It automatically added the ¶ character if I just di...

Re: TMG Imported Citation Detail
After looking a little closer at the 7.09 changes you mentioned, I am now wondering if maybe a new import of the data would be in order after all. Looks like there are quite a few improvements, and it looks like it would fix both the Citation Detail issue and allow me to start off with templates fro...

Re: TMG Imported Citation Detail
Thank you so much for that very detailed reply. I did do the final import of the data back in January and a lot of citations and other data have been entered since then, so I think I'll shy away from a fresh import. But it is good to hear that CP fixed that particular import issue. I think I will tr...

TMG Imported Citation Detail
Long time lurker here. I have been using FH7 for about a year now (came from TMG) and I absolutely love it. This last year has been spent verifying integrity of the TMG imported data, learning the new program, alongside my regular research, and during this process I came across an import quirk regar...

Re: Import from TMG - Source and Citations
Thank you Mike! I did take a look at those plugin scripts and on the surface they look a little beyond my ability :? , but if it can ultimately save time (and possibly help other users and TMG migrants) then I guess it might be worth the effort to learn a little about plugins. I have the TMG databas...

Re: Import from TMG - Source and Citations
Thank you for your reply, I checked the File->File Statistics and it does indeed show 1431 for sources which is the same as TMG. So that puts my mind at ease in that regard. Regarding the plugins, I guess I will not use them then, especially if they don't source the relationships in the way FH recom...

Import from TMG - Source and Citations
I figured I have received so much competent help, that I'll brave a few more questions: I have spent about a week now auditing imported data from my TMG database into FH7 and I have noticed a few more discrepancies. The first one is regard to the sources imported. I noticed in a post from 2014 regar...
