Re: Introducing myself and a little (or maybe big) question
Another quickie question please I'm trying to tidy my rather muddled and inconsistent list of sources. Is there any particular reason to keep the BMD sources listed as two sources for each - with the two date spans - or could I just merge them to something simpler such as GRO birth register, GRO dea...

Yes, that was my first thought but not in this case.
I am enjoying this learning curve and appreciate you help when I get stuck. Thanks

Mixed up sources
Is this a glitch or am I not looking in the right place? I'm working on tidying up sources and citations after importing this tree from FTM. All is going smoothly and making sense but I have just come across something that is confusing me. Using the Sources index, and View Record Links, I want to ma...

Re: Introducing myself and a little (or maybe big) question
Thank you. What do you call them? I tried to look the answer up myself in the Help pages but didn't know what to look for.

Re: Merging two trees
Great. Thanks for your help. It’s been a long day but I think I’ve done it! No doubt I’ll find a few little glitches but it’s all looking OK on the surface.

Re: Merging two trees
So far so good.
If I have different birth dates for someone in the two files, (but without looking back I don't know which is correct), will it keep them both so I can correct it later?

Might be a long job but it's a good way to pass the time when it's just too hot to go in the garden.

Merging two trees
I'm sure this must be covered somewhere in the knowledge base but I can't find it. I imported a GEDCOM of my tree when I first got the programme but decided to start the same tree from scratch so I could learn how things work without messing up the original. But, I got carried away, as you do, and a...

Re: Middle names
Thanks, Mike, that sounds quite complicated at a first reading but I will go through it a few times with the screens in front of my and see if I can make it work. Then I will a) be pleased b) come back with more questions or c) give up and make do with first names only  I'm going for option C...

Middle names
Hello all, just a tiny question but I can't find the answer anywhere. Is there a setting to ensure that middle names show in the Facts screen? Lots of my people are only distinguishable by their middle names where family names have been passed down through the generations. For example this would be ...

Re: Introducing myself and a little (or maybe big) question
Thanks, Victor, That sounds similar to the format I have chosen but I am sticking to the format used by the record office so I can just copy and paste them.

Re: Introducing myself and a little (or maybe big) question
We're getting slightly off-topic here, but it may save you from problems in the future. For me, that was not off topic at all. It is exactly the kind of helpful advice that I am looking for so that I can get things right from the beginning and not have to go back and fix everything later. I think, ...

Re: Introducing myself and a little (or maybe big) question
So now, my next question... Like many people I don't have a clear grasp of sources and citations but in my new FH practice tree I started creating a new source for each census return then linking it to every family member in that household. The format I decided on is Title -1881 census RG.... Piece....

Re: Introducing myself and a little (or maybe big) question
Thank you, both. I have read some of those articles but, as I get more experience, I think I will need to re-read them a few times to really understand what I am reading. It’s quite difficult when you don’t know what some of the words mean when you first start. And PlugIns are a whole new world - no...

Introducing myself and a little (or maybe big) question
Good evening, everyone, I thought I should jump in and introduce myself as I can feel a string of beginner questions coming on! I am a refugee from Family Tree Maker which I have had for about 6 months and am continually frustrated by its idiosyncrasies and glitches. Family Historian was recommended...
