Re: Creating a Custom Query
For reference, I have read through the items in Help as well as the KB articles. I also have the 'Getting the Most From' book where I scanned Chapter 17 and read Chapter 18. I am a computer programmer by training although it has been a few years since I last worked in the field and I am finding cust...

Creating a Custom Query
I am likely to be an Immigrant from RM as I think poorly of their latest effort. As such I am working on learning to do the things that I did in RM7. One of those things is a custom query or three and I am having issued because the query system here make no sense to me without AND/OR and the ability...

Re: FH7 Looks?
I also think FH7 should have a touch up on looks, however nothing nearly as extremely as what the forthcoming RM 8 has done. I am one of those people that need to have my software 'feel right' in order to use it. None of the major packages completely meets that standard, so I muddle about relying on...

Re: Family Group Sheet - adding events to it
Actually it does have to do with GED as database. It limits how one can store information, specifically pushing place details into an address field to maintain GEDCOM compliance. Using some type of relational database allows for a lot more freedom in how to store something. The formatting of the rep...

Re: Family Group Sheet - adding events to it
For now I am going to use the Buried option with the concatenated address, or I will generate the desired reports via FTM or RM since they both follow the standard FGS format that I have been using for all these years. I chalk this up to one of the weaknesses in using GED file as the 'database'. May...

Re: Family Group Sheet - adding events to it
No, what I did was used Buried, not Burial so that I could create the address/place concatenation. Buried is what Lorna's example shows. Burial can not be edited because it does not show up in the 'Family Member Main Items (in order)'. SO I have Burial on the exclude list and have added the custom B...

Re: Family Group Sheet - adding events to it
I actually munged something together. I can't get the date of the burial, but that is ok. I don't have many actual burial dates, so I can live with that.. I did the following: =Text("******************************************".%INDI.BURI[1].ADDR%.", ".%INDI.BURI[1].PLAC>%) The string of *'s actually...

Family Group Sheet - adding events to it
Last night, at 2am, I was able to add Burial to my family group sheet. I removed it because I did not like the fact that the cemetery name (which is in the address field) doesn't appear where I want it to. Now, I want to put it back and for the life of me, I can not figure out how I got it there. Ca...

Attribute vs. Event
I am looking for an explanation/best thread to read that will explain best practices in regards to creating/using attributes or events. My understanding of the two is that events are things that happened, such as birth/death/marriage/burial etc. Attributes are pieces of data associate to a person/fa...

Re: Place Details - Where can I put them?
There are a number of considerations that affect how best to use the Place field and Address (Place details) field. See glossary:places|> Places and Addresses that clarifies some of the points mentioned earlier and has several links to related Forum discussions. There are some key decisions to be m...

Place Details - Where can I put them?
In my previous workflow, I had a 'Place details' field to work with. This was in addition to 'Place' and 'Description'. I used place details for things like cemetery name, name of a hospital where someone was born/died etc. The place field contained things such as the city, county, state, country an...

Re: Custom fact imported as both Event and Attribute
Before importing, I did read the Knowledge Base article that you suggested. I know there are several bit that are RM specific, such as _AMTID, _UID and _COLOR to clean up. I am assuming _COLOR is due to color coding in the file, which doesn't seem to exist in FH, at least not in the base program. St...

Re: Custom fact imported as both Event and Attribute
This is an interesting response because when I created the FindAGrave fact in RM, I only use the description field. I unchecked Date and Place. So the people that I used FindAGrave on should all have content in the description field, and that is the memorial number. If I don't have a FAG memorial nu...

Custom fact imported as both Event and Attribute
Per tatewise's suggestion, starting a new thread on why this happens. I have imported a GED from RootsMagic. One of the custom facts (and in that world facts and events were used interchangeably) that I used was imported as both Event and Attribute. I had previously created a FindAGrave fact that I ...

Excluding facts from reports
I have brought in a GED file from Rootsmagic. IN that file, I have a number of custom facts that I created for various reasons. Many of these are things for my own reference and they are not meant to be used in reports. As such, they had no sentence structure, or when they did, it came in badly mang...

Re: Stop printing Witness information
That would work, but I will, at times, want that to print witness information. Is there some means of commenting out bits of the sentence template, so that when I do want it, I just un-comment that part? If you are talking about Narrative Reports you can simply use the Tools>Fact Sets option from th...

Stop printing Witness information
I am new to FH and I am currently exploring it to see if it will meet my needs. I like the way Witnesses can be added and used. But....I would rather not have it print out in reports in most cases. For example, the individual narrative has the married couple and the witnesses and justice of the peac...
