Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.5.7

Hi Neil,

Yes, I thought the original error may have been because of the 'beta' status, hence my not reporting it, but it also happens with the released version too.

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.5.7

Hi Nick, I had 7.5.4 installed. Tried to do an update to 7.5.7 by using Check for Updates and received an error message. I didn't record any details of the error as I just downloaded 7.5.7 and installed it, thinking it may have been an issue with beta versions. Version 7.5.7 installed just fine, but...

Re: Search for a specific fact

Well, colour me embarrassed! I didn't even think of looking for a downloadable query. The All Facts Filter By Label works just fine. One thing I noticed was that many (all?) of the downloadable queries say suitable for V4, V5 and V6 but don't mention V7. Can I assume that a query that works for V6 w...

Search for a specific fact

Hi All, I'm trying to find any occurrences of a specific fact - Divorce specifically at present, but any fact really. I can do a query, and that works, but I was thinking there must be a simpler way of finding a nominated fact. Something like the Records Window with a Fact tab and filter by Fact typ...

I'm not ready for this yet - still moving from my old software, but it seems like something I will use. Thanks for contributing to the FH "system".

Re: Notes on Moving from Relatively Yours to FH7

Basically, my notes follow this sequence: 1. Steps to be taken within RY3 to ensure as clean an export as possible. 2. The actual export, including comments around export options 3. The import into FH7 4. Comments on the result of the import 5. Fixing the many issues (usually because of RY3 export l...

Re: Notes on Moving from Relatively Yours to FH7

Thanks Helen and Mike. I didn't want to explain how to create a query - the document is long enough as it is. I'll add some screenshots and comments and upload the query. Now I need to spend some time editing to try and make the notes more concise - I can get a bit "wordy" at times!

Notes on Moving from Relatively Yours to FH7

Hi All, I'm nearing the end of my move from Relatively Yours 3 to Family Historian 7. I have written some notes on my process (when I say "notes" I mean over 7000 words and 16 pages). One of the steps requires using the Change Any Fact Tag plugin with a custom query to select the appropriate records...

Re: Media

Totally OT, but...

I taught adult education courses in the early 80's. We used Apple IIs. One of the students was a secretary with fantastic typing skills, but to see her use the Apple keyboard was painful. Turns out she was worried she might hit the Break key and literally break the PC!

New Search the Internet Bookmarks topic

Hi,

Noticed that the description of this new topic says "The and commands allow custom URL". I assume the "and" should be something else.

Thanks for the article, by the way.

Re: What is a Source Note, and a Descriptor

Hi Mike, You are so right about the GEDCOM specs not being an easy read. It seems like they were written by a committee, and a dysfunctional one at that! Thanks for the explanation and examples. That explains the Source Note vs Source. As for the 2 TYPE D07 Death, Cremation , this is part of the cod...

What is a Source Note, and a Descriptor

This isn't an important issue. I'm just trying to understand what's going on. So, I've looked in the FH help, the forum and the knowledgebase but I can't find a reference to a Source Note . It's quite possible I missed finding it - wouldn't be the first time I couldn't find something that was in pla...

I had to look it up, and “paramour” was the best offering, but I must admit it’s not a term I’ve come across before.
I don't suppose "bit of scruff on the side" would be politically correct. And a bit to wordy.

Re: Adding a Marriage

Hi Mike,

Thanks. I have now deleted it, and also made a note about re-creating it manually (not Copying) after I've completed my migration to FH7.

I'm still progressing on my move to FH7 but unimportant things like work keep getting in the way.

Re: Adding a Marriage

Thanks Mark, Now my ancestors are married! I'm no longer a b*****d (although some of my family would disagree, but I digress). This all may have come about from issues I had with Defacto relationships. Jane and Mike helped me, but I had copied the Marriage fact to create a Relationship fact. Mike ha...

Adding a Marriage

Hi All, Forgive me for asking such a basic question, but I've looked at the forum, knowledgebase and FH7 help and I am stuck. I can't add a marriage! Oh, I can add a "relationship" easily, but "marriage" is not an option I can see. The Add Fact button on the property window has Add Relationship (alo...

Re: Changing Generic Citations to Templated Citations

Thanks Mike. I do plan on using AS, but I intend on working without AS initially just so I know how FH7 works. I'm one of those people that likes to know at least a little of the "plumbing".

Re: Changing Generic Citations to Templated Citations

Hi Helen and Mark, Thanks for the information. The good news is that my citations are well formatted, and consistantly formatted. However I think I'll manually redo them. It will give me experience in doing citations in FH7, and allow me to experiment with Lumping or Splitting, and allow me to updat...

Changing Generic Citations to Templated Citations

Hi All.

As the topic says, is there an "automatic" way to change Generic citations to Templated citations?

My export from RY3 is imported as Generic citations and I have decided I want to use, where possible, Templated citations.

Thanks,

Re: Addresses

Thanks Mike. Manual correction it is then. After reading the Knowledgebase articles on Places and Addresses (I did this before even purchasing FH) I decided to keep them separate. For me, the Place is the most important piece of data - just town, state/county, country. The Address is just a nice ext...

Hi Mike, Yes I just Copied - simply to see if it would work. I then deleted it. It's all only testing at present anyway, but good to know that copying will have unintended consequences. Thanks.

Re: De facto relationships

Hi Jane, Thanks for the suggestion. It works. And now I've worked out why I had a marriage Fact. I had entered a marriage date thinking, as the status was Unmarried couple, that this would be the date of the start of the relationship. Obviously not. So I can't record the date they started co-habitin...

Hi All, Still progressing on the move from Relatively Yours 3. I have an issue with addresses and I think it is an issue with the RY3 created GEDCOM (Not FH7) but would appreciate any comments. De facto relationships

Hi All, Apologies if this has been covered somewhere, but I couldn't find anything. If I add a Spouse I can set a Status to "Unmarried couple" but the Fact sentence still reads as "married". I don't know about elsewhere but in Australia a "de facto" relationship has no legal paperwork (like a marria...
