Re: Is there a way to add shared notes to place records?

Every Geo reference is unique. I use seven decimal places, so no two locations down to the size of a room in a building will share the same coordinates. The lat and long ARE the unique ID. No additional data entry or identifier required. Thanks again for your response on this and other threads. I ap...

Re: Is there a way to add shared notes to place records?

Thanks. Here’s what I’m thinking. I manually provide a Geo reference for each place name. Thus, each Place record will have a unique identifier composed of the latitude and longitude coordinates. I can simply rely on lat and long for finding all places that have the same location, but different name...

Re: Is there a way to add shared notes to place records?

Helen is talking about the Standardized field available in every Place record. Perhaps this is where I was going wrong. I was creating a place record for the modern place name, then trying to use that record as the standardized name. What I understand you to be saying is that Standardized place is ...

Re: Is there a way to add shared notes to place records?

And the Standardized Field links to a place record for the standardized place name. I only get the single standardized name when I do a search.

Re: Is there a way to add shared notes to place records?

Yes, not that useful because I don't see a way for Standardized Places to show any relationships to other places. It is simply another place, with no way to know in text that it is the same location as others. Granted, they would all be mapped to the same location, provided their coordinates are ent...

Re: Export of Research Notes to GEDCOM?

Thanks, all. Your responses are helpful in several ways. I had forgotten that I had created my own "research notes" in FH6 when I was looking at my GEDCOM export. I am using the FH7 Research Note functionality. In fact, I was surprised to see my "research notes" in the export because I had a hunch t...

Is there a way to add shared notes to place records?

I continue to struggle with an efficient method to record variant place names for a single location. I thought that I could record name changes in a note shared by the various place records. However, the only shared note option displayed in the Add Note dropdown for places is Research Notes and thos...

Export of Research Notes to GEDCOM?

I'm curious about how other genealogy applications might display Research Notes. I did an export of my data to a GEDCOM file and see that each note is a separate entry, such as the abbreviated example below. What does the "@N29@" preface mean? How might Research Notes be found or displayed in a non-...

Thanks, Nick. The functionality of AS outweighs my preference for the FH7 interface.

Re: FH7 Custom Census Source Templates

The whole point of AS is that it 'prepares' the Source record and auto-adds the Citations for you. Recording sources and record citations are two different operations, which I believe is the concept behind FH7's source-driven data entry. I can prepare a source. Then later create citations to that s...

AS Error Message: Data Entry 4.9

I have installed the latest version of Ancestral Sources (7.2.7): see screenshot. Yet, I on launch from FH7 I consistently get the error memo (see screenshot): Later Version 5.0 of this Plugin is available from the Family Historian Store.

Advice?

Re: FH7 Custom Census Source Templates

Thanks. One more question...

I find it easier to create Prepared Sources in FH7. Is it possible to access a FH7 Prepared Source from Ancestral Sources?

Re: FH7 Custom Census Source Templates

FH7 source templates display the auto-generated bibliography, footnote, and short footnote when the source template window is open. Ancestral Sources does not.

Is there a way for AS to display the bibliography, footnote, and short footnote similar to FH7?

Delete Source Template Record?

The Knowledge Base mentions in several places that Source Template Records can be edited. For example: "Changes you make to a Source Template Record within your Project (by editing it directly, or synchronizing it with changes you have made to the corresponding Source Template Definition) will not a...

Re: FH7 Custom Census Source Templates

To load a template into AS you would need to go to Tools->Source Template Editor and then select the Source Type, then a template and then click Save. I have loaded Advanced and Custom source templates into my FH7 project. How do I get them to appear in the AS Source Type dropdown? I only see the E...

Re: Map Life Facts substitute place?

Ah ha. Thanks for taking the time to experiment. Having both Skäraborg and Götaland as different place-names, for use at different times, makes perfect sense to me. Here's what I'm leaning towards. I want to record places that may have changed as they are presented in the historical record to avoid ...

Re: Map Life Facts substitute place?

Thanks for the reply. Clearly I do not understand the purpose of Substitute/Standardized Place. And not for lack of searching for an explanation. I’ve reread the place chapter in Getting the Most from Family Historian 6, reread the Map Life Facts help sections, and searched the FH7 help files. All o...

Re: Map Life Facts substitute place?

Also, BEJ may not be aware that the Map Life Facts place names and mapping can be synchronised with the FH Project Place records. Then any changes to Place name, Standardized/Substitute name, or Lat/Longitude in either the Plugin or the Place records will be synchronised with the other. I do synchr...

Re: Map Life Facts substitute place?

If, on the other hand, you want to keep both Skarborg and Vastra Gotland as place-names for events and attributes and effectively say that they are synonyms, then that's a different matter. Using one as the standardized name for the other, will ensure that the two end up with the same co-ordinates,...

Re: Map Life Facts substitute place?

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I want to match Skarborg with Vastra Gotland, which is already a fh7 place record. Seems like it would be easiest to just select it from a list of existing places, rather than type it in each time. I understand that is not an option.
