Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields

Wow, Nick - that's going above and beyond!! Thanks so much! Teresa The next version of AS will support holding down a key to select alternatives (very similar to the way FH does it). This was quite a difficult feature to implement. I tackled it because I liked the challenge of working out how to do ...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields

Thanks, I have gone in and done this now. In my distracted state, that hadn't sunk in... Also have added the pound sterling symbol to the dollar key, so I can select it as well. Very helpful. Thanks again :) Teresa, as I said earlier, you could add both ł and Ł to both l and L . Then whether you rep...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields

Sorry for not being clear - yes, that does work, the extra click on the cog is annoying. Mike reminded me I need to hold down the Shift key to get the upper case letter to display. Thanks :) If I click the settings cog and add the Polish accent set, the lower and upper case L show the two different ...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields

Right, I forgot I have to hold down the Shift key to get the upper case - all good now. Distracted by an ill geriatric cat, so not thinking things through properly. Thanks for the reminder :) What have you got configured for lowercase l and uppercase L in the configure dialogue? By default, nothing ...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields

My point was more that with the number of diacritics in any piece of French text, the way FH7 does it is much quicker and detracts less from the transcription in progress. As for purchasing a Mac foreign language keyboard... well that is the $99 CDN question. It would be the Cadillac solution, if I...

As I said earlier, that is because they are in Tools > Preferences > Property Box and the screenshot is a munge of two tabs.
That was my mistake - I should have explained what I'd done, but was working quickly and posted it without thinking how others might misinterpret the image

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields

Ancestral Sources just uses the standard Windows form text boxes (although I do add extra functionality such as the auto-complete, etc.) so I'd expect a foreign keyboard would work, but I've never used anything except a UK one so I can't be sure. Nick, it does work in AS in its native Windows envir...

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields

I do much of my research in French records and have found that AS 7.7.3 does not seem to allow the use of diacritics; especially in the Place field of the data entry screen. The associated FH7 program does allow diacritic entry. This means that there are some recorded places and names that AS canno...

Re: tips for sizing source pane?

Ah, but I haven't closed the property box in the Focus Window. But yes, I admit I was bad and didn't read the Help, however read that tick box text to mean something different - it certainly wasn't clear language to me, so I shouldn't have ticked it without clarifying. I will try again tonight at ho...

Hi Mike - thanks! I have set things that way, yet when I opened up today, the Property box didn't open... Or do I not have it right?

Re: tips for sizing source pane?

I concur - Mike's suggestion is genius - gives me what I've been looking for as well. Is there any way to have those floating boxes open automatically? Or do we have to reset the view each time we open FH? I have ticked Open Workspace Windows Remember Property Box State, but I don't think this helps...

Re: Should I repeat previous old data entries using AS

Ah, ok - that makes sense. I hadn't noticed I could select Electoral Register. Most of mine are UK based anyway, though I have some Canadian ones as well. Will try it out and see :) Thanks! It is a 'census like' source. So choose Census and then choose Electoral Register from the Type drop-down list...

Re: Should I repeat previous old data entries using AS

Where? It's not a birth/marriage/death/baptism/burial or census... I'm happy to use AS for ERs, just not sure what module to use to do it. Thanks. For me, this means all my newspaper clippings, directory listings, electoral registers, etc.. Don't forget that electoral registers can be input through ...

Re: Should I repeat previous old data entries using AS

Going over old work is always beneficial - we often find things we missed. AS will definitely help as you create a transcription as well as a source/citation. Of course, AS works for specific events only - birth, marriage, death, baptism, burial, and census - so other sources will still need to be a...

Re: Should I repeat previous old data entries using AS

In the end, it's up to you. I switched to using FH last year for my main database and since then have been working through AS and with modified FH templates to redo my sources. Previous programs have left them a mess. It's a long, slow process, but to my mind, well worth the time and effort. In the ...

Re: AS minor update v7.7.3

It depends on the certificate and the circumstances - on several DCs for my ancestors, the informant is also recorded as having been "present at the death", which means I include them as a witness to the event. Vital record certificates differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction - we can't assume that...

Re: Clarification Requested re: Source Driven Data Entry

I second this recommendation - this video is very helpful for understanding how Sources/citations work in FH. Helped crystalize a couple of concepts in my head so I'm now far more confident in this area of my FH workflow. If you haven't watched my video on sources then you may find that useful (http...

Re: Templates, titles, and footnotes

Once I work out the right templates, I’ll take on the task of conforming my current source records and citations. Having not been at this long, I have several hundred source records (not nearly the thousands or tens of thousands of records some FH users have amassed), so it will take a little time ...

I had wondered the same thing - thanks for adding it on the next update :) Unfortunately not, but I agree it would make sense if it did. Re: Adding Census Transcription After Entry

You could use the Census Source Convert feature to create a rich-text transcription. Once you select the source you will need to use the 'Add Headers' as there won't be a grid to enter data into. Then you would need to type data into all the fields in the grid and then right-click on the row header...

Re: Adding Census Transcription After Entry

No, no way to go back in to AS and do it without re-entering the whole census. I would go to another family who has a census from the same year entered with the transcript, copy and paste into the Source from Text box, and then edit it to reflect the family for whom I don't have the transcript. Stil...

Glad to know it's not just me who had trouble finding the right menu, and I agree, having it available via right click would be most helpful, and far more intuitive. Go to Diagram > Family Connection Mapper, and you can configure the colour there. You can add extra relationships and have different coloured routes.
