Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
I wondered the same thing... Yes, it can be hard the first couple of times to put yourself out there and ask a question, but if you want help, it's the only way. To be fair, Mark, Mxy could be searching the forums and finding answers that don't help them. You don't have to ask questions to be unhapp...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
I don't blame you for being insulted. You definitely do NOT give techie answers - they're always clear and direct, with no jargon. I definitely appreciate all the time you give to both these forums and to AS. I do find these comments tiring and insulting to be honest. I don't think I give 'techie' a...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
While I understand your frustration, as a non-techie person, I can't agree with you about the forums and the help provided here. Each time I've asked a question, I've received helpful responses with step-by-step instructions I can follow. If I find something in a "techie" post, I ask for clarificati...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums
I'm happy with the changes as proposed...The plug-in forum is one I monitor, but don't use frequently, so will go along with whatever heavier users of it decide. As one of the less techy people here, I admit there are times I still enjoy wading through the posts, watching how the conversation develo...

Hi Charles, Welcome to the FHUG! To understand sourcing in FH and how to us AS, I recommend watching Nick Walker's YouTube videos, in the order below: https://youtu.be/jm6gg1HSbEs (All About Sources in Family Historian) https://youtu.be/7tj9FzTZIng (Ancestral Sources - Introduction) https://youtu.be...

Re: Question re: usage of Census, Residence and Occupation
Putting on my historian hat here. NO document's content can be trusted. There's ALWAYS room for error, either deliberate or accidental. No matter what document we look at we have to ask who created it and why. One could make the same argument for a marriage certificate/parish register entry. I know ...

Re: Question re name displayed in Individual record
Thanks, everyone - Nick had it right - I entered her in AS as Abbott, Mary Ann. The librarian in me still always thinks last name, first name. All fixed now
Appreciate all the input!! Learned something as always.

Question re name displayed in Individual record
This is an odd one, even for me. For some reason, an individual I recently entered into my database via Ancestral Sources (she was the informant on a death registration), Mary Ann Abbott, appears in the Individuals list as Ann, Abbott, Mary. Yet if I look at the property box, she appears properly as...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
Have you watched Nick Walker's video about Sources and Citations in Family Historian? It does reference the templates in V7, but the rest should generally apply: https://youtu.be/jm6gg1HSbEs I wish I'd had access to this great video when I first started with FH - Nick does a wonderful job of explain...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
As a non-techie person but an avid user of software I'm not too bothered by some of the techier answers - if they get beyond me, I just move along. OTOH, from time to time, I do learn something I can apply, so appreciate this aspect. I'm in favour of anything that keeps things as simple for the admi...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
How does one view the forum via the Active Topics list? I just looked at the display options in Board Preferences and didn't see anything relevant. I wonder if anyone else uses the forum like me. Other than the AS section (that I keep a closer eye on), I only ever view the forum via the Active Topic...

Re: Suffolk and Huntingdonshire Parish Register Images
I had seen this on Cambridgeshire Archives FB page recently and am thrilled. I have ancestors in Cambridgeshire and only recently learned I have collaterals in Huntingdonshire, for which I've been depending on some transcriptions at FMP. So excited I'll finally get to see my great-grandmother's bapt...

Re: Kent Family History Society (KFHS) copyright breach!
Helen is correct. I imagine this is less about "copyright" but more about breaching the terms of a licensing agreement.
ColeValleyGirl wrote: ↑22 Apr 2023 14:26As you say, facts cannot be copyrighted, but there may be a breach of the contractual terms under which KFHS made the material available.

Re: Renumber Record IDs as part of "RE-DO"
Lorna; I knew about the "set root" option. Having the root person as ID #1 ensures that this happens by default. And; I assume that an export with the root as ID #1 would carry this behaviour forward to another system, if I send the data to someone. It's just something I figured I'd do now, as I ce...

I had the same issue as you - now I know, it's fine, but I agree, to someone new to the program, it's not obvious... Thank you SO much… that’s REALY not obvious… I kept trying to edit the text and nothing happened except the top name changing… I didn’t realise the change of format had to be above th...

As another RM refugee, this is what I've ended up doing - for now, focussing on my main line. If I win the lottery and have all the time in the world, then I'll also do the same for everyone in my tree  With RM and FTM, I was always told there is only ONE WAY to do things. Hi Nick, Great update...with the diacritics, however, there are no Polish ones. I understand if programming them is too much of a pain, however, should you want to try, they're as follows: ć, ń, ó, ś, ź ł ą, ę ż Ć, Ń, Ó, Ś, Ź Ł Ą, Ę Ż I will test the rest of the features later today :) Thanks again!...

I'll add a third voice in support of this wish list request...like Sarah, I've became pretty adept at editing the template, exiting, checking it "live" and then returning to edit the template again, but it would certainly be helpful to see it live while working on it in the template editor.
