Re: Record Flags beginner level
I couldn't even find the first bit to get to the Customize Data Entry :( Would you mind including a screenshot so I can see where I went wrong? Thanks :) <snip> First use the cog Menu > Customize Data Entry and review the Help . In top left Tab: drop-list ensure Main is selected. Bottom left, untick...

Re: Census Tabs
Thanks, Mike, for the explanation...that makes sense. In the end, with the majority of my database being from the British Isles, the UK census returns are dominant. I can always just create a table using software if I want a census summary for those who appear in Canadian censuses. Teresa Teresa, I ...

Re: Census Tabs
Thanks, Mike - that does look pretty good. Also like the original with the occupation, though it takes up more room. Will have to decide on one. Also, one assumes I could create a separate Cdn Census tab for those records. So much to do, so little time! T  Teresa For what its worth, I thought y...

Re: Census Tabs
Will vote for it :) T See Wish List Ref 474 allow fields with qualifiers and function results on property box tabs that you can Vote for. It proposes to extend the contents of each box to allow functions. Then Place and Address could be concatenated by using the =Text(...) function, plus many other ...

Re: Census Tabs
Colin, I would love to see an address field as well but understand if that's too much of a bother... And, yes, Canada's census goes to 1926 currently (and that is only for the Prairie provinces - 1921, is the most recent Federal census) - the 1931 census will be released next year - yay! That said, ...

Re: citing prison hulk records...
Alas, the Advanced template is based on EE, not the Strathclyde method, and I far prefer the latter, having generated citations with both templates. I always have to remind myself that no software is perfect, we just have to find one that serves us the best it can. Just glad FH still is the best I'v...

Re: citing prison hulk records...
I will have to edit, as the note field doesn't get included in the footnote, and I make extensive use of Notes in my citations.

Re: citing prison hulk records...
Ok, so I had a go with both, and it mostly worked, only the information I entered in the Collection field on the Directory/List template (which I preferred) didn't show up in the Footnote - should it have? If it's not supposed to, I'll just clone that template and amend it. Just wanted to check, tho...

Re: citing prison hulk records...
Adrian, Thanks for your thoughts. Like you, I use Macdonald's book as my guide (with the odd extra detail from ESM's EE thrown in from time to time). Part of the reason I've moved to FH from RM is because the latter's templates are geared for American records, while FH's for British ones and come fa...

Re: citing prison hulk records...
Thanks, Helen - there are varied prison sources, not just one. Lots for transportation to Australia, but others for Ireland and England. Half the time I have to decide against which fact I'm citing them and might need to create custom facts. For the prison hulk, I'm citing against a residence fact (...

Re: citing prison hulk records...
Thanks, Adrian - lots to consider here. While I love creating new templates (now I seem to understand it better), I'm leery of creating too many, which is what I did in RM. OTOH, I have lots of instances where I have to cite online prison databases (naughty ancestors  ). I appreciate your input...

citing prison hulk records...
I'm not sure what template to use for the prison hulk record of one of my distant cousins, transported in 1823, the record having been accessed via Ancestry, while still housed physically at TNA. Directory/list from the Essentials collection seems the closest. Of course, I have enough prison registe...

Re: Source template help needed....
Thanks, Adrian - I appreciate the tips. I hadn't put a Record Title in yet as I was still just messing about with it and brought up short by the error message. I appreciate your explanation of the implications. Your solution certainly looks good. That's why I love this forum - lots of practical tips...

how to download queries
I was watching a video that mentioned downloading queries from the FHUG website, however, I can't figure out how to do it...When I right click and choose Save Link As, it gives me a .htm file, which doesn't seem right. Or am I misunderstanding?

Mark and Adrian - Mark has it right - I have a lot of newspaper articles from FMP, so in RM created a citation template specifically for them. Re: Source template help needed....
Ah, thank you...it would help if CP programmed the message to say in which field the codes don't belong! Thanks again for the explanation :) The problem is the Bibliography field. RM allows citation level fields to be saved in the bibliography, but FH does not. This has come up before, and the gener...

Source template help needed....

Thanks for sharing this, Sarah. I had forgotten about Kathryn's grid. Really must start using it again. I've created other tables within FH notes and find it easy and convenient :D This is a completely different take to what the rest of the thread has revolved around, but I think this may be a solut...
