Don't forget that big commercial sites may offer free trials (remember to cancel before the end of the trial); also look out for special offers. The Genealogist currently offers a cashback in it's ad on "Family Tree". Email me direct if you want the discount code. I just checked out the Ancestry Lib...

Re: Recording a negative
I use some Custom Facts defined as attributes with all fields ticked in working with facts dialog (except Address which I don't use). They are Not Found meaning I haven't found an entry, Possible meaning a possible entry and Missing meaning the anticipated record is missing. There are individual and...

Re: Rearrange Column Headings in Where Used Record Link plugin
Many thanks Mike, have managed to change column order to suit my need. Have been using this plugin while converting Method 2 census entries to Method 1. Making a few discoveries as I work through, especially with items I recorded many years ago.

Rearrange Column Headings in Where Used Record Link plugin
I would like to move the Where within Source column leftwards. I tried copying the Plugin and renaming before amending the code but when I tried to install the amended Plugin it got the message already installed.
How should I go about this please?

Re: Name Problems
Use IsNull()
Eg
while ptrWork:IsNull() do
code
End
Null is a special value comparison to which always produces Null. It's not 0, nil, or an empty string.

This looks to be a very useful idea. Thanks. Telephone directories can also provide residence info (and a phone number!)

Tried the mobile site just now m.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com seems to be working but some links are broken? Maybe a server issue.☹

Re: Alternative Surnames
This looks like a useful technique for handling people in the 1939 Register who are part of a household but whose records are redacted. Naming them as /[head of household surname]/ helps to identify where they belong. (They are also associated by the Method 1 source citation created by AS.)

I would never overwrite a previous backup in case file corruption has crept in meanwhile.

Which pdf reader?
I have been using Microsoft Reader to open pdfs, this has now been unilaterally discontinued by Microsoft and replaced with MS Edge. I am looking for alternatives.
Does anyone on the Forum use pdf readers they would recommend?

Re: Help resources in TMG and fh
Point taken Mike, will look at the indexing thread. The dynamism of this forum is one of the things that attracted me to FH. I do recognise that an awful lot of voluntary work has, and is, going into it. I am grateful for that.

Re: Help resources in TMG and fh
As a new user of FH from version 6, I don't need to learn about what happened in older versions. The KB sometimes takes me through a historical journey. Not what I need really.

Re: Help resources in TMG and fh
E Wilcock said "Once they have started using the software, what new users really need is to find clear succinct answers to questions". Not only new users I suspect. There are two sides to this 1. How do I as a user construct a search phrase that leads me to the answer? Experience, understanding the ...

Re: Death certificate
Thank you Mike, so true. At least gedcom exists and is accessible. Deaths and the registration thereof are separate events. I like to separate them and identify the relevant individuals and their relationships. I have a death on 24, inquest and registration on 28 and burial on 31 all in December. I ...

Re: Death certificate
This discussion is interesting and instructive while showing both the strengths and issues with FH (and perhaps with other software). As a family historian I want to be conducting research, which I can record and evidence. Then to print out the results as a tree or a report showing who the players a...

Re: Ancestral Sources needs .NET Framework 3.5 ( includes NET 2.0 and 3.0)
I am sorry this caused you alarm. I suspect that as you started with Windows 8, .NET 3.5 was already installed. The problem I experienced was starting from Windows 10, where .NET 3.5 is optional in certain situations. In theory the installation of Ancestral Sources should have dealt with this. AS pr...

Hi tatewise, Thank you. I tried the enabling via control panel. It does not work at this component is not installed. The attempt to install via Windows Update also fails. Reinstalling AS failed to install .NET 3.5 Windows just fails to find the necessary files. I worked with Windows long enough to k...

Ancestral Sources needs .NET Framework 3.5 ( includes NET 2.0 and 3.0)
I have recently purchased a lightweight Lenovo notebook. It is running a fully updated Windows 10. I have successfully installed and run FH using the migration guides. However Ancestral Sources needs .NET Framework 3.5 ( includes NET 2.0 and 3.0). This is as Microsoft describes it a Features on Dema...
