Do you know what the symbol after his name is that looks like a "y" with an "o" over it?

Thanks,
Bill
It's actually how they wrote 'the'.

Written as ye (with a reversed e) which was the old English thorn - the source of YE as in ye olde shoppe.

Re: Occupation - Scholar etc

In my head I was thinking of adults who'd left school decades ago, so were unlikely to be going back into education... Still even so, yes, as always, it's the info at that point in time. In my role as an Interviewer working for Office for National Statistics I regularly come across people who have ...

Re: Occupation - Scholar etc

I don't dispute that enumerators and respondents may not report exactly what is true on the ground! It's worth checking through an enumerators records to see how he tends to work. I prefer to record what's there and then note what I think might have actually been the case citing my reasoning in notes.

Re: Occupation - Scholar etc

I prefer to keep both Scholar and other occupations as recorded on each source. They act as anchors to record school admissions or promotions and pay rises (railway ancestors or career soldiers). Also changes of occupations as economic situations dictate. It also alerts me if a particular source sho...

Perhaps add a "test" suffix to the names, or add "test" image as the first preference instead of faces

I Use [] for missing first name and for unknown maiden name I use married name in square brackets ie [Smith]

John
I also do this. For example [] /[]/ for someone redacted in the 39 register. Context is given by the source citation

Re: GRO Death Index now upto 2017

It is even better than that, the drop down goes up to 2019, additional information needs to be supplied for events in last 50 year to order. At least the index entries are visible.

I run FH on my desktop and on my laptop. I have mapped the c drives on each. I use Microsoft SyncToy 2.1 to keep a number of folders in step. I run it whenever I finished working on one computer. Then I matching sets of files.

Re: Trying to Evaluate Family Historian But Can't Use Sources Because Eval Version

To take up your point about Normalisation. This concept applies to databases where you store data in tables usually with a reference column. Repeated data gets stored in separate tables keyed by an index, progressively as you go through first normal form, second normal form etc. FH stores the data i...

I would use the white version of BluTac.
Alternatively use cling film to secure to a stiff board, or large book.

Re: Fh instruction at Society of genaologists?

I went on the Beginners and Refreshers course at Society of Genealogists in 2017 just after I'd purchased Family Historian. It was run by Simon Orde who was standing in. Found it very useful. Even as an experienced programmer I found it useful. I certainly would consider the intermediate course. Wha...

Re: Synch FH on two Laptops

I use Microsoft SyncToy v2. 1 Having finished working on whichever machine I've been using, and backup FH on exit. I then run SyncToy to bring the machines in sync. You can select the folders to synchronise and omit subfolders if desired (eg Sample Project, thumbnail casche.)
