Re: Wish list item 520 (name types)

Ok, so it still feels like a “three bucket” solution, even if the exact titles and actions might need refining: Clear proposal, to go to list. Needs refining - call for volunteer to coordinate, close if nobody steps forward. Little interest, close. Let’s see how big each bucket is, then take it from...

Re: Wish list item 520 (name types)

Helen - so what’s your proposal? If we shouldn’t reject items because the original proposer can’t work up the support case, nobody else has chipped in to refine it, and it’s not the moderator’s role either, what do we do with them?

Kicking them into the long grass isn’t a solution...

Re: Wish list item 520 (name types)

Let’s take it case by case once we see how many items are in each bucket. The aim will be to focus moderator time where it can be best employed - helping work up a credible and well-supported proposal.

Re: Wish list item 520 (name types)

This feels like “paralysis by analysis”. A significant number of requests have been languishing for months with little or no discussion. To move things forward, I’m happy to commit to going through all the outstanding items and place them in one of three buckets: Clear proposal, pass back to author ...

Re: Wish list item 520 (name types)

Mike, fully recognise that. I proposed some time ago that if neither the OP nor somebody else supporting the proposal is prepared to get it into a form where it can be easily transferred to the list, it is closed automatically. Your and Helen’s roles should be as editors, not authors. How about sett...

Re: Wish list item 520 (name types)

While not wishing for a moment to undermine the excellent work done by Helen and Mike to maintain the Wish List, doesn't that just demonstrate that the current process is not fit for purpose? Virtually nothing has been progressed to the actual Wish List or marked as closed since last year, despite m...

Re: Assorted Gedcom Questions/Problems

The MARR tag has no place in the INDI record, this is only allowed in the FAM record! I recognise that from the sync plugin. Ancestry does not export family records correctly in its GEDCOM. In particular, where there is a family with only one spouse (e.g. a marriage to an unknown partner), all the ...

Re: New version of Ancestry Synchronization plugin

That's an interesting idea, Teresa. The plugin was originally designed to work strictly in the order FH > RM > Ancestry, by copying an existing FH project to RM, and uploading to Ancestry as a new tree. However, now that we have added audit functions to the plugin, there is no reason in principle wh...

Re: Custom Message Box with hyperlink

Nice one! I'm not sure I understand the significance of the "flat" controls. "... does not have native decorations ..." seems to mean that it looks different. That's obvious for button vs flatbutton, where one looks like a button and the other doesn't, but label/flatlabel look the same to me. "...si...

Re: Custom Message Box with hyperlink

Me too! I gave up on word wrap a while ago, as it clearly doesn’t work as described. I generally hard code line breaks, then work outwards for the rest of the form design. It’s only a potential issue for custom dialogs based on standard forms. Normal IUP message boxes are fine, but they will be call...

New version of Ancestry Synchronization plugin

A new upgraded version of the Ancestry Synchronization plugin is attached for users to try prior to uploading to the store next month. This enables an extract from your family tree to be exported to RootsMagic and posted as an Ancestry tree, and manages updates such that your hint history is maintai...

Re: Custom Message Box with hyperlink

Thanks Colin, very helpful. Broadly similar to Linux/WINE, so plugin authors who are creating their own custom Message Boxes need to be aware of the differences between native Windows and running in an emulator/WINE. Fortunately, that is fairly easy to detect with a simple Registry read (as per the ...

Re: Custom Message Box with hyperlink

There is one minor wrinkle to be aware of. I tried the plugin when running in Linux Mint / Wine, and the native appearance of the Message Box is rather different, as well as having a shorter preferred line length. Screenshot from 2023-05-17 18-19-38.png Screenshot from 2023-05-17 18-20-05.png It's n...

Re: Custom Message Box with hyperlink

Excellent, thanks Mike. I was vaguely on the right track, but went down a rabbit hole with passing handles around. I've also tidied the code to remove the unnecessary grey box (it's just the default form colour), so I'll add that to the released plugin, probably tomorrow.

Re: Custom Message Box with hyperlink

Elements such as the background box to control colour and defining the font as the standard Windows dialog font (for users who use a different default in FH7) a...

Custom Message Box with hyperlink

I'm experimenting with creating a custom Message Box containing a hyperlink. It's fairly straightforward to get something close to the standard IUP Message Box, but there are a couple of slightly annoying differences that I can't resolve. MessageBox.png Facsimile.png The icons are slightly different...

Re: Query and Plugin Result Sets

I had quoted the paragraph from the 7.0.9 release notes and asked if it was an oversight that it was not implemented for Query and Plugin Result sets (as the paragraph seems to suggest it would be) but they didn't comment on that. That’s not untypical of CP support, unfortunately. If it’s something...

Re: Forum Changes

I am fine with the current setup, as I only ever go to a specific forum when initiating a new thread. One minor change that might serve as a reminder until muscle memory is retrained could be to change the title of the pinned top post in the General Usage forum to something like "Forum Changes - Ple...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

Interesting reading Helen’s comment, which came in as I was composing mine. Do we have two different forums? Helping general users with the mechanics of FH, and a much more loosely defined discussion forum? There is room for both, but it is the mixing up of the two that seems to create tensions and ...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

Agree forum should cover all aspects, but we should note the strap-line at the top of every page - “Helping Family Historian users since 2002”. IMO, that is the core purpose of what we do. The more open-ended discussions tend to be limited to a hard core of around a dozen or so users (including me a...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?

Agree - there is a time and place for everything, and discussions about GEDCOM details or what may or may not happen in the future with FH/CP or the world in general are part of that. It was the rather unstructured wanderings of this thread, coming at a time when we are trying to give FHUG more focu...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?

Agree completely with Teresa and Sarah - IMO, this thread is a perfect example of how not to do things, and is mostly an overly detailed discussion about philosophical points that matter not one iota in the real world. Apologies if anybody is offended by the description, but there are an increasing ...

Re: Asian name order and "/"

The GIVN and SURN tags are actually superfluous, and FH neither uses nor needs them to correctly denote the surname. I suspect they are included simply to support the claim of GEDCOM compliance.
