Re: Emigration & Travel

If you’ve amended the fact rather than copying it, why do you expect the old version to still be available…?

Re: Existence of a field definition in Source Template

Two options: Create a new custom query of type Source Template, and list each field definition in sequence. You can then either inspect manually or export the results to file. Alternatively, inspect the definition file directly, which is stored at C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Source Te...

Re: West Surrey Users

We have a fairly active FH users group within the local family history society that meet on Zoom once a month, mostly to deal with basic newbie questions. It works well as a complement to this forum for those who prefer to be shown how rather than working from written guidance, but the big disadvant...

Ok, clear thank you. I’ll have a play later this evening (UK time). I wonder if it’s an issue with saving plugin settings? If you change one of the Options settings, does it stick?

Re: New version of Ancestry Synchronization plugin

Matthew - I’m a little puzzled by this. Could you explain what you mean by “nothing happened”? Could you bring up the file selection window? Could you select your new RM file? Doing things in the sequence you did shouldn’t affect file selection, but you are likely to have a lot of incorrect Living f...

Lumped Source Splitter plugin - new version for testing with enhanced processing of templated sources

The Lumped Source Splitter plugin was designed originally for generic sources such as those typically imported from FTM, where all sources are lumped. Templated sources imported from RM via GEDCOM were added by user request, but the plugin has not been updated since the much more reliable and compre...

Re: FH Short Date and ISO Format

FH doesn't help the situation, as it actually uses yyyy-m-d rather than the yyyy-mm-dd set in the preferences. They are different and distinct formats. It's a relatively minor bug, but it can have a significant effect on sorting.

Re: Does not display date in ABBREV3 format

Be aware that AFAIK there is no easy way to make FH display dates in that yyyy-mm-dd ISO form unless it is already defined as your Windows format. You have to create a very convoluted function to assemble the various parts and keep leading zeros. IMO, that is a significant shortcoming, as it is the ...

Re: New version of Ancestry Synchronization plugin

No issues have been raised for this new version of the plugin, so it is now available in the Plugin Store . The draft version attached to the start of this thread has been deleted. If the draft is opened beyond the end of this month, you will get a prompt directing you to the store for the released ...

Re: Unblocking the Wish List process

Part of it might be linked to the list credibility. If you open the list, nearly two-thirds of the top-ranking items are 15 years old or more. IMO, that’s a terrible first impression for new users, and doesn’t exactly give them a great incentive to vote.

Re: Unblocking the Wish List process

Rich text is always trotted out as a justification for keeping old items in the wish list, but that comes back to the question I asked earlier. Was it implemented in FH7 because it was on the wish list, or because FH6 was looking increasingly dated compared with the competition? After all, there wer...

Re: Allow citation fields in bibliography on sources

If it is something that could be a major blocker for RM users, it’s worth raising with CP to see if they can do anything on import. They modified the way FH imports RM alternate names to give a better fit, so they are open to such discussions. Modifying an RM template is probably beyond the limited ...

Re: Implement a "nulls last" sorting option to prevent blank data appearing first when sorting

With the modification as discussed please, so the item becomes: Issue: When tabulated data are sorted within Family Historian, missing (null) data are treated as lower than any defined value. This means that when data are sorted alphabetically (the more usual scenario), null entries appear first, an...

Re: Unblocking the Wish List process

An interesting read. Many of the themes still ring true today. I was particularly struck by the concept of a shorter, much more focused list, aimed at today’s needs. Two thirds of the current list dates from FH5 or earlier, so if it hasn’t been implemented yet, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for ...

Re: Unblocking the Wish List process

So, to summarise - essentially the Wish List is not being managed. You do what you can on a best endeavours basis, but judging from forum posts over the past year or so, none of the other forum moderators get involved with the detailed management and oversight of the process. The present rather mori...

I’ll buy that. As a general point, I think we should be careful about introducing too many new items until the backlog is cleared, but this is simple and well-defined.

Unblocking the Wish List process

Re: Synchronising settings using 'mklink' command

Have you selected "Run as administrator" when opening the command window to create the junctions? It's personal preference how many folders you link. The top level folder contains a lot of files, so it's a balance between coverage and speed of syncing. A lot of people are still on internet connectio...

Re: Export Gedcom File to The Genealogist

A reminder that if you just want a bare bones tree extract, the GEDCOM export from the Ancestry sync plugin will probably be suitable. An advantage of that method is its automatic and very thorough management of private individuals and events. However, if you want a “full fat” tree with all your med...

Re: Using Lumped Source Splitter v1.2 on RM9 Imported Sources

There is no explicit record of which sources have been converted, but you can use the Records Window to work it out. A source with a large number of citations and an old revision date has probably not been split, but new sources created by the plugin will have many fewer citations and a recent revis...

Re: Family Tree

The mechanics of passing on data are potentially fairly complex. If a tree is on Ancestry or similar, l believe only the owner can download it. Everyone else just has read access to the website, so extending it might be a challenge. I’ve got a large box of old photo albums, 35mm slides and 8mm cine ...
