Re: Ancestry Synchronization now in Plugin Store

Interesting - there’s quite a lot of code in the plugin already that deals with limitations in RM, so this is one more “feature” to address. Keep feeding in these observations, and I’ll have a play with my test dataset to check the best way to fix them (or highlight if unfixable automatically).

Re: Ancestry Synchronization now in Plugin Store

We can probably go one better than that - by using a similar technique to the Windows backup and restore plugin, it could actively check whether RM is open or not. I wouldn’t force-close it, but I’ll have a play with options. On your other point, I tend to run a second compare at the end of the proc...

Re: Plugin Store download counts broken?

It does! I have checked all the plugins where I had noticed a difference (including Mike's Export Gedcom as a control), and the download counts are now the same for the standard logged out public view and via the Author Dashboard. I hadn't reported it to CP as I was waiting for the download counts t...

Re: Adding marriage date / place to children in a family group sheet

That’s the one! My employer generously paid for a three year Diploma course even though the IT was really only peripheral to my role at the time. Year two was practical application using Borland C++ Builder (useful for constructing plugins and their UI correctly) and year 3 was relational databases ...

Re: Adding marriage date / place to children in a family group sheet

PS .... why when i add a snip image, does it appear so large? What is your setting for Tools > Preferences > Display > Screen Font Scaling? That's not just a passive zoom of the type you may be familiar with in other apps such as web browsers or Word/Excel, etc. It actually enlarges the font, so co...

Re: Adding marriage date / place to children in a family group sheet

I tried the trick of leaving labels blank for all bar the first child (or just an invisible space), but FH won't permit that.

Re: Merge repositories?

Teresa, IMO, some of the advice here is getting unnecessarily complicated and missing the goal of what we are trying to do. Configuring the Records Window is one option, but that is not the best solution to this problem. All we want to do is create a listing of the actual Repository records themselv...

Re: Adding Custom column to Source Records List?

Welcome to FHUG - there are many ex-TMG users here, so I'm sure you will get lots of useful advice as you get deeper into FH. The detailed column listings of the Sources tab of the Records Window is most suited for Generic Sources or for displaying columns that exist in all Templated Sources. For ex...

Re: Adding marriage date / place to children in a family group sheet

I’m not at my desk at the moment so can’t try it out, but I can’t think of an easy way of grouping children by marriage. You could list children individually, but you would need an extremely large number of rows (3 marriages with say a dozen children rows under each one), so it’s probably impractica...

Re: Kent Family History Society (KFHS) copyright breach!

I’ve been rummaging around on the FaG website, and they certainly play up the community involvement and play down the fact they have been wholly owned by Ancestry for 10 years. :( It’s in the “about” history, but the real giveaway is when you click on the legal small print at the bottom, and it goes...

Re: Merge repositories?

The easy way is to click on the plus signs next to the name to display all the sub-fields. The slightly more complicated way (but easier to get a full overview) is a Custom Query of type Repository, and add each of the sub-fields in turn using the Query Builder.

Re: Adding marriage date / place to children in a family group sheet

Being pedantic, I think empty vs containing nothing is closer to object orientation theory, but I agree that no bucket versus empty bucket is a better metaphor for explaining it. Mind you, it’s nearly 25 years since I did that course (programming different coloured frogs to jump up and down using Sm...

Re: Kent Family History Society (KFHS) copyright breach!

An excellent reminder, Bill, thank you. I use the Kent FHS databases extensively (accessed via FMP), and I always record the FHS as the author and FMP as the repository. I ignore parallel listings on other databases, and am particularly wary of FaG, as it seems to hoover up a lot of duplicate data f...

Re: Adding marriage date / place to children in a family group sheet

This non-intuitive behaviour of FH regularly catches out even experienced users! Indeed it does! It's exactly the subtlety I encountered when I was first learning OO programming and models (nothing to do with model railways) many years ago - there is a difference between being empty and being full ...

Re: Adding marriage date / place to children in a family group sheet

I thought this was such a good idea that I have started adding it to my own custom report. One minor disadvantage of the way the report definitions work is that you have to add a lot of fields, using a tiny space in the editor. For example, the maximum number of spouses per individual in my main pro...

Re: Merge repositories?

Curious - are the duplicates identical in all fields, or is there a difference between them somewhere? Were they Ancestry sources that you attached to your tree in Ancestry, or could RM have created the duplicates either on creating the source or subsequently on TreeShare? It doesn't affect how you ...

Re: Place records for places with no names

It would need to be suitably qualified to be unique, so Settlement, Albany County, etc, wouldn't work if there was likely to be more than one. You should probably adopt a system that allows for that in the future even if not needed now, so something like Settlement [Colchester], Albany County... wou...

Re: Ancestry Synchronization now in Plugin Store

Good luck with that one! It might actually warrant an additional warning message if the plugin default of excluding living people is changed - Uploading personal data relating to living individuals without their explicit consent may be an offence under local data protection laws. By enabling this op...

Re: Ancestry Synchronization now in Plugin Store

Thanks for that John. "Living" changes are highlighted by the plugin, so I think the best option will be to add a warning note to the help file that TreeSync may not process these flags correctly, so it is the user's responsibility to check Ancestry entries to ensure living people privacy is properl...

Re: Source templates

I agree - I said early in this thread that I didn’t think the conversion was worth it, but I have subsequently experimented with “hybrid” sources that mix elements of both generic and templates. I’m extremely happy with the results, but it needed a mix of custom templates and bespoke plugins and que...

Re: Plugin Store download counts broken?

No, results are fully repeatable (same browser, logged off, on, then off again) and reproducible (Windows/Edge, Linux/Firefox and iPad/Safari), so it’s not a cache issue. All three of my plugins updated/loaded this week show consistently higher counts when logged on, as does Mike’s Export Gedcom as ...
