Is that a good example of the recent discussion about making plugins easier to find? It’s an obscure thread with three different plugins (complementary or competing?) by three different authors.
Should there be one agreed version in the store, with the others retired?

Re: Backup size increasing
Actually it wasn’t discussing medium backups until several posts in, but I suspect most of these recent posts will be deleted as another silly FHUG squabble that doesn’t get us anywhere and certainly doesn’t have any long term value...

Re: Abbreviated Place Names
Thanks Mike, good challenge. My concept is that the Abbreviated name is used in its entirety everywhere that a place is mentioned, in order to keep it simple. Having said that, my initial comments were really just based on interest in seeing an almost identical post to what I posted as an FH newbie ...

Re: Backup size increasing
Remember though that the FH backups are really only for users who don’t otherwise backup their personal folders. If you do, you don’t need to run them at all, and your FH data are backed up along with all your other stuff.

Re: Abbreviated Place Names
Can this thread be moved to New Wish List Requests en-masse ? We've already started discussing it, and it feels a bit artificial to split it now. I was trying to keep it simple, but clearly that can be a difficult thing to do here ;). Agree that there are multiple ways of defining how places are dis...

Re: Abbreviated Place Names
There are many systems for devising and using suitable place names, so I’m wary of adding additional complexity. Would the simplest option be a single new text field for Place Records, “Abbreviated Name” or something similar. This is free text for the user to define how they see fit. Reports and Dia...

Re: Abbreviated Place Names
Still think it warrants a wish-list item though, given that at least two other competing apps support the feature. The workarounds were a bit advanced for me at the time, just a few days into my FH learning curve, and wouldn’t work where I most wanted them - Individual Summary and Family Group Sheet...

Re: Abbreviated Place Names
That rang an immediate bell for me, and a quick search produced this post , from four days after I signed up to FHUG over five years ago bemoaning the lack of this feature, which FTM also supports! :( The solution I adopted was to adopt full place names for detailing the actual event, but abbreviate...

Custom family attribute? Limited use though, as I would have thought it would be relatively rare to confidently state a reason for being recorded as childless.

Re: Ancestry to FH7 via RM Essentials
Thanks David - very clear. I think you are doing absolutely the right thing in migrating your master tree off Ancestry to a desktop app such as FH, but you probably wouldn't expect any other answer on this forum! The short answer is that I don't think your current system is sustainable in FH, but th...

Re: Missing information list
Couple of options - configure the Records Window to display that fact, so all records without it sort together, or a Query with something like remove if that fact is not null. I’m not at my desk at the moment so can’t be more precise, but that should point you in the right direction (and somebody el...

Re: Ancestry to FH7 via RM Essentials
Welcome to FHUG. Getting different apps to talk to each other in a consistent way is always a bit of a challenge, but can you clarify a couple of points please? What exactly do you mean by the Record ID in Ancestry? AFAIK, there isn't a Record ID as such displayed in Ancestry, unless I've missed it....

Re: War and Service records
One more thing to think about 🙂... I generally design my own templates, as I don’t use either AS or the new FH7 DEA approach. I try to ensure that there is sufficient information between the automatic source title and the old generic Publication Info field to locate the source unambiguously (Helen’s...

Re: Backup and Restore via Windows: Witness Roles question
Understood - it depends on the relative timestamps of the Fact Set files. My explanation holds if f you made your original customisations on the old PC before CP finalised the Fact Set file included in FH7.0.18. If it was later, something else is lurking in either the plugin or your system setup. Th...

Re: Backup and Restore via Windows: Witness Roles question
Andrew, I've confirmed with my own testing that if you run a backup, create a new witness role for a standard fact, then restore the backup using the Windows plugin, the witness role is not restored unless you choose the "Discard any changes..." option. The plugin is therefore behaving exactly as de...

Re: Backup and Restore via Windows: Witness Roles question
Before we get too carried away, the video referee has to intervene - did you select the "Discard any changes..." option when restoring using the Windows plugin? If you didn't, this is exactly the scenario I described above. The backup file is older so will not overwrite the newer file on the target ...

Re: Backup and Restore via Windows: Witness Roles question
It’s probably worth including this scenario in the KB comparison of the two plugins. The older one works at the file level, so offers greater fine control for this situation, while the newer one works at the folder level with user-selected general options. This sacrifices the fine control for a simp...

Re: Backup and Restore via Windows: Witness Roles question
Thinking about it in more detail, a second backup and restore (with either plugin) wouldn’t prove anything as your files are in a different state to when you did it the first time. To do it thoroughly, you should completely delete FH from your new PC between tests, but that is probably too drastic! ...

Re: Backup and Restore via Windows: Witness Roles question
Could you try both plugins please? I’m reasonably confident that it is a Fact Set issue rather than a plugin issue, but if you see no difference that will confirm it.I’ll try another backup/restore tomorrow using the older Plugin

Re: Rich Text font detection
Most of these issues can be fixed with fairly simple plugins, but I’m deliberately not posting anything other than the basic rich text detection as it’s CP’s responsibility to address these inconsistencies. Ideally, plugins should provide additional “nice to have” features, not fix program bugs.

Re: Forcing the next source onto next page?
The disadvantage of going via RTF is that it introduces a lot of other untidy formatting that may not have been in the original version. However, if you are familiar with Word macros, it is possible to construct a formatting macro that works in conjunction with your standard report setting to give a...

Re: Backup and Restore via Windows: Witness Roles question
OK, we can rule that one out. What about my other question please - did you modify the standard Death fact or clone it to create a custom version that you then edited? Once I know exactly what you did, I can try to replicate it.

Re: Ancestry Synchronization now in Plugin Store
John, I'd love to be able to delete RM names from within FH, but it doesn't appear to be possible. RM uses a propriety format for name fields that is generally incompatible with external editors. Google RMNOCASE for the technical details, but much of it goes over my head! A quick test with SQLite Ex...

Another thought - did you restore to FH6 then upgrade to FH7? It’s possible that has overwritten your customisations to standard facts.

Re: Backup and Restore via Windows: Witness Roles question
Thanks for that feedback, Andrew. That's an odd one. Witness roles are not saved separately, so it sounds like the wrong version of the Fact Set file is being used. Taking your example, do you add a new witness role to the standard Death fact, or to a cloned custom copy that eclipses the standard fa...
