Re: Option to not create an image cache

Thanks both - I’d forgotten the cache options in Preferences, so that does seem to do what I was seeking. I’ll follow David’s route and check that it does not reappear.

Option to not create an image cache

Another simple to define item for consideration - Issues - The media cache file is large and is refreshed frequently. This can cause delays in syncing with cloud storage if the user has a relatively slow internet connection (uploads are generally much slower than downloads, particularly for non-FTTP...

Re: Birth registered twice legal ?

Did you not spot my tongue in my cheek...? Modern adoption records are closed for very good reason, and there is rightfully a very high bar for enabling identification and contact (and curiosity comes nowhere near). Remember in your case you are talking about a birth 150 years ago. There was no form...

Re: England & Wales Probate Calendar images

AFAIK, National Archives is just a link to the Probate Registry site, which seems to use the same image set as FMP (in fact, FMP is probably a copy of the Probate Registry database).

England & Wales Probate Calendar images

I'm going through some of my Ancestry England & Wales Probate Calendar images and replacing them with better copies from FMP. The Ancestry images appear to be scans of the original bound copies, and many of them are rather poor quality, with poor contrast and heavy skewing due to the thickness of th...

Re: Change any Fact Tag Plugin Error

I was having a play with this in case there are any implications for my fact plugin.

Can undefined facts only come from an import? I couldn't see any way of creating one directly in FH, or have I missed something?

Re: Using Function YEAR with Source Templates

I think it is a general issue with using field codes in functions. I use the TextPart() function in my templates to remove unnecessary elements from {Location} fields, but I could only get it to work using the long form %SOUR.~PL-LOCATION%. I suspect FH is working as designed, but the help should sa...

Re: Implement a "nulls last" sorting option to prevent blank data appearing first when sorting

Didn’t think for a minute we’d avoid analysing it to death... I can guarantee that whatever the detailed design is, it won’t cover every possible use scenario, so a “set and forgot” option is not practical. It’s got to be clear to the user, and easily described in the help text, so if we were starti...

Re: New text clipping option

In CP’s defence, I’ve had a number of “discussions” over the years regarding elements of the help (particularly plugin help) and given specifics of where it is ambiguous (or just plain wrong). These usually result in a revision. Most of the “we have reworked the description of...” comments that come...

Re: Implement a "nulls last" sorting option to prevent blank data appearing first when sorting

Exactly - the proposal is to to put missing data at the end, irrespective of the sort order. It’s how both Excel and modern versions of SQL work.

Re: Version 7.0.19 Install Issue with directory junctions and one drive

There may be two separate issues here - the robustness or otherwise of the installer (and it’s likely to be a third party product rather than something written by CP), and problems created by the 15-20 year-old basic architecture of FH that was devised before cloud storage became common. Personally,...

Re: direct import RM 9

Agree - RM7 to RM8 was largely the addition of additional tables and fields to the same basic storage framework, but there were also a few significant changes to existing fields so they changed the file extension to keep them distinct. RM8 to RM9 appears to be a much less significant enhancement wit...

Yes, I thought we had defined it already, but I've added the proposal to the New Wish Lists thread. I think this one is easy to define, so doesn't need overcomplicating.

[Wish List Item 596]Implement a "nulls last" sorting option to prevent blank data appearing first when sorting

Issue: When tabulated data are sorted within Family Historian, missing (null) data are treated as lower than any defined value. This means that when data are sorted alphabetically (the more usual scenario), null entries appear first, and the user has to scroll down the list to find data containing t...

Re: Some Source Images Not Appearing in ISR

RM9 includes a separate 64-bit version for the first time. I thought it was far from a trivial exercise to recompile a 32-bit app as 64-bit, but it would be good if FH did the same, as memory issues do arise from time to time with large projects and reports.

Re: Version 7.0.19 Install Issue with directory junctions and one drive

I never use the in-app upgrade procedure, as I think it is more reliable to download the exe and install from that (as administrator). It also gives you a way back if a major flaw in the new version comes to light (hopefully not, but it has happened in the past). Directory junctions are preserved in...

Re: Birth registered twice legal ?

Agree - I have a similar case from the 1920s, and there are two separate index entries, one for each surname. It’s an odd case. Although the father was named on the birth certificate, he married somebody else just 3 months later, and his bride had just turned 17 (he was mid-20s)! I’ve traced the jil...

Re: Source Record Title confusion

Doesn't that demonstrate that there are many ways of achieving the same end result in FH when it comes to sources? Taking Helen's example, I would have a Title similar to her Short Title (i.e. what the source is), no Short Title, and all the details of where such as date and weblink etc in the Publi...

Welcome to FHUG. Glad you are liking the program.

What you are asking for is neither technically possible nor permitted by the license. You will need to buy two copies for four installations.

User data and settings can be shared.

Re: Source Record Title confusion

Using Templated Sources, you can have a more detailed Bibliography and/or footnote entry for a source; the Record Title (IIRC) isn't included in reports. Lorna is correct. That is another rather sweeping statement that is missing the all-important “by default”. It’s straight-forward to configure a ...
