Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?

Could make an interesting forum. At a rough guess, 70% of the answers come from “techies" (including four out of five admins), so who exactly would answer your questions?

Unless, of course, you are offering to set up "FHUG-lite" yourself...?

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

I think Adrian has summed it up well. It’s difficult to use the more advanced features of FH without getting technical at times, but a clearer structure and the excellent proposal for a “start here” for newbies will make the forums more inviting.

Re: Switching tips? (RM->FH)

The Ancestry GEDCOM export does something similar - exports custom Attributes as Events, with the value in the Note field. I convert them back to Attributes with the Change Any Fact Tag plugin, and have a simple custom plugin to move the Note back to the value.

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

Helen covered that in her initial proposals. Things like data references are ubiquitous throughout FH, so shouldn’t be split off. IMO, there’s no harm at all in occasionally having to give a complex answer, but it may not be appropriate to get into a deep discussion in a general forum.

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

There is probably a responsibility on plugin authors to keep their response appropriate to the question and avoid introducing undue complexity. I've taken a critical look back at my posting yesterday regarding a bug report with the Ancestry Sync plugin: Colin kindly shared his export file with me, a...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

Looks good as a basic framework. Plugins may be the trickiest group to get right, as evidenced by the comments already, but I think I see four basic buckets: Using Plugins - general discussions about using existing plugins. They will not in general lead to any changes to existing plugins, so of pote...

Re: FH -> RootsMagic -> Ancestry (Work-in-Progress)

Colin kindly shared his export file with me, and the problem arises with date phrases containing quotation characters, as these are not escaped when creating the SQL statement that updates RM. I’ve shared a temporary fix with Colin, and a more permanent one will be incorporated into version 2 of the...

Re: IUP images on buttons

John,

An interesting addition - it could create some nice attractive plugin menus and forms.

Trial and error worked - add iup.SetGlobal('IMAGESTOCKSIZE', 32) to the top of the script to set the default size. It's not obvious why that is necessary, but IUP can be unpredictable at times!

Done - should be shown as from Family Historian User Group (FHUG), subject Ancestry Plugin.

Try your Junk Mail folder if it hasn't got through directly!

Re: FH -> RootsMagic -> Ancestry (Work-in-Progress)

Colin, I've looked at the error message in more detail, and it clearly arises from a malformed SQL statement used to either update or delete a record in RM (which is why you are only seeing it when updating). However, all it tells me is that the error occurred in the SQL library, not exactly where a...

Re: Change Marriage to Blessing

That's an interesting read. In properly defined and written software, it shouldn't matter one iota whether a family have a conventional marriage, civil partnership, blessing, or whatever other arrangement they come up with. A much more likely scenario in our historical records is where there is no m...

Re: Change Marriage to Blessing

Neil, I get the same. Investigating further, "Blessing" is defined in FH as an Individual Fact, not a Family Fact, and you cannot interchange between the two types. The solution is to create a new Custom Family Fact. Give it a distinct name, such as "Marriage Blessing", to avoid confusion with the e...

Re: FH -> RootsMagic -> Ancestry (Work-in-Progress)

A belated welcome to FHUG, Colin. Could you clarify exactly which plugin you have used please, and what you are trying to do? The plugin in the above post relates to an older process that is now obsolete. The supported method for linking FH with an Ancestry tree extract in a way that supports hint c...

Re: Suffolk and Huntingdonshire Parish Register Images

Useful learning point here - I already had a thorough review of my Cambridgeshire records earmarked for the autumn, and checked their website only last month for any information on image availability. There’s nothing, and “latest news from the archives” takes you to a story from 2019! It seems they ...

Cambridgeshire as well. AFAIK, original images are not available anywhere yet but I would be delighted to be proven wrong as I have family in that area on both sides. That was actually my last family history field trip before Covid struck - a solo trip in the motorhome across to Bury St Edmunds and ...

Thank you for your feedback. In future we recommend making a copy of the sample project if you are customising it.
I will pass your comments to the developers for consideration.

Re: Version 7.0.20 Released

Indeed - and let the developer who has never introduced an unintended consequence cast the first stone! I've always found them very receptive to a well structured "this doesn't seem right because.." proposal, as opposed to "I wouldn't do it that way if it were my app"... It is clear from responses h...

Given that CP rarely interact with user forums to explain their thinking, I’ve raised a ticket with the excellent points made here.

Re: Version 7.0.20 Released

The changes sound like they could be important to me, but I'd like to be sure of what to expect before re-importing my RM9 data. Depending on how one interprets what was said, it may or may not affect my dataset. Gary, none of us are mind-readers, so our interpretation is no more likely to be corre...

Re: Version 7.0.20 Released

Confirmed in my testing. Upgrading the FH version blows away the Sample Project without warning, even if it has been changed by the user. IMO, that is sloppy programming. The Sample Project is my data, in my Documents folder, not in an FH system folder. Resetting it also deletes all snapshot backups...

Re: Location and Security of Media Files

Bill - I was just describing what works for me and correcting your assertion that OneDrive cannot recover accidental deletions. Your requirements may differ, and you have your solution.

Let’s not dilute the core message to readers - a file not backed up is a file you are happy to do without.

Re: Location and Security of Media Files

Bill, OneDrive has a recycle bin, so accidental deletions can be recovered. It also keeps previous file versions (a bit like FH snapshots on steroids). It's my modern equivalent of the USB hard desk in my office locker when I was a wage slave - I don't bother with a physical copy offsite these days....
