Re: Export from Family Historian to Ancestry: Citation Data (Problem)
My intended use is to capture and record the Ancestry (or other) URL of a website page displaying the content referenced in a citation (for future review and for easy access by others). Remember the important caveat here, though - such links generally lead to a paywall, so are only visible to users...

Re: Enhanced plugin editor
Let's not lose sight of the objective here - improved out of the box tools for new and casual users, not more workarounds for experts.

[Wish List entry 614] Enhanced plugin editor
An enhanced plugin editor that provides basic tools such as auto-complete (to remind users of exact FH function names and expected arguments) and context-sensitive formatting (to readily distinguish between FH functions, Lua code, variables and string literals) would be of great benefit to both exis...

Re: Date Project Started?
I can't think of a reliable way. It's not stored in FH. You could check the "Date Created" of the project file in Windows Explorer, but that would only be the date that copy was created. It's the latest it could be, but if it is a copy of an earlier file, the original date is lost (AFAIK). The earli...

Re: Sources and Proof Arguments
I think we have to accept that there is a lot of dross in public trees. The important thing is to make sure that your own tree is robust and supported by the available evidence, so I think you are taking exactly the right approach. The method I use is to create a Research Note, which can be linked a...

Re: Blank or general event
Coincidentally, I was asking myself a very similar question only yesterday. I came across a local newspaper report of minutes reporting that my g-grandmother be awarded a certain sum of money as owed from her late husband’s pension. I’ve duly created a suitable source record, complete with image, bu...

Re: Exporting Notes
We’ll agree to politely disagree on that final assertion. One thing that’s becoming increasingly apparent to me as I get involved in other FH groups outside FHUG is that we are not representative of FH users in general, and most folk seem to use the product at a far more basic level than the relativ...

Re: Exporting Notes
FH Export > GEDCOM File command .. retains all the FH customisations and does not cater for other products. Aren’t you being a little dismissive of the standard export here? While CP have clearly judged it doesn’t make commercial sense for them to spend the time that you do to tailor export to mult...

Re: Moving from Family Tree Maker to Family Historian
In these circumstances, I think you are much more likely to influence CP if you open a support ticket at http://support.calico-pie.com/open.php and point out that you are evaluating FH, but won’t purchase it as it lacks the critical feature x that product y supports. You’ll never get more than a “th...

Re: Moving from Family Tree Maker to Family Historian
It’s a valid question though. If the OP says which aspects in particular they don’t like (and it must be a pretty strong dislike if that’s the only reason not to ditch FTM :) ), we may be able to suggest acceptable workarounds. If the Wish List item has only received 40-odd votes in seven years, I w...

Re: Is there a 'Dead Flag'?
FH always exports Death facts that have no subsidiary fields by using the 1 DEAT Y construct as defined by the GEDCOM specifications for 5.5. and 5.5.1. My Export Gedcom File plugin does not do anything with DEAT facts because it assumes FH always gets it correct. Mark, can you show evidence of FH ...

Re: Is there a 'Dead Flag'?
I'm not Tatewise, but the answer is "yes and no"... When importing a GEDCOM, FH understands 1 DEAT Y, and creates a blank Death fact. However, it will also import 1 DEAT N and create a blank Death fact without complaining! It stores a blank Death fact internally as 1 DEAT, and exports it in the same...

Re: Is there a 'Dead Flag'?
My own policy for Online sites is to completely remove all living people before uploading, anywhere but my own site Agree - I actually go further than that, and usually omit the dead siblings and spouses of living people as well for obvious sensitivity reasons, using the Private flag and my own cus...

Re: Lumped Source Splitter plugin - new version for testing with enhanced processing of templated sources
No issues were raised by users, so the draft plugin above has been deleted and the plugin store updated with the latest version . A significant change in the new store version (1.4) is that citation level notes are no longer considered when determining citation equivalence. That maintains a better d...

Re: Export Gedcom plugin project changes (bug?)
In order to render each of the Template Formats (Record Title, Bibliography, Footnote, Short Footnote) the fhSrcEnableAutoTitle() function must be used that only operates on a Source Record Title with a link to a Source Template. So the plugin uses a dummy Source record linked to a dummy Source Tem...

Re: Export Gedcom plugin project changes (bug?)
On the basis that a picture is worth a thousand words... Capture.PNG There is nothing in the first pair of menus to highlight that the second one needs a bit more attention, and if you are used to seeing the first style, it would be easy to miss the extra line of text in the second. Re: Export Gedcom plugin project changes (bug?)
Thanks - clear, and I’d missed the extra warning in the closing menu compared with running in the Sample Project. Couple of suggestions for you to consider as you see fit… There are no visual clues in the final memo to indicate that the user needs to pay more attention. IMO, it would be much clearer...

Export Gedcom plugin project changes (bug?)
I was a little concerned after running the Export Gedcom plugin to see that my project had been changed, as "Undo Plugin Updates" was enabled, and FH prompted me to save changes on closing. It is the latest plugin version with all options apart from the destination folder still at default, as it was...

Re: Creating a Source Template
It’s one of the more confusing aspects of templated sources that often trips up newcomers to FH7. The templated source ecosystem has three distinct elements. At the top, there is the definition, which is available to all your projects. You generally create a new template (which is local to your proj...

Re: New values of First and Last for Fact Type Normal Time Frame
I like the idea, so to build on it I would add the proposal that such facts be displayed without the annoying long dash that is currently used for undated facts, as they are by implication facts where date is not relevant.

Re: Implications for WINE in dropping Windows 7 support?
Thanks Mervyn - clear that it is a Linux problem, not an FH problem. The Mint repository still offers Wine 6.0.3! There seems to be very close cooperation between CodeWeavers and the Wine developers, so CrossOver is far more up to date. Wine does offer various Ubuntu/Mint versions on its own website...

Re: Implications for WINE in dropping Windows 7 support?
Curious - I know official repository versions can lag a little behind, but current Linux Mint PlayOnLinux/Wine seems to still default to W7, and FH installation raises the warning even if set to a later version. Perhaps the Mac options are better developed? Hopefully, it's a non-issue, so not someth...

Implications for WINE in dropping Windows 7 support?
It appears that CP quietly dropped support for Windows 7 from FH 7.0.20 onwards, as this version and later generate a message about an unsupported version of Windows when installing fresh into W7, with a strong recommendation to abort the installation. While few would argue against that approach in ...
