Re: Best way to index my collection of church register images
I create a folder for every individual, in batches of 1000, i.e. 1-999, 1000-1999 et seq in the FHs Media folder , I store the image in the principle persons folder and put a short cut to that image in the other people's folders. That way I only store the image once but can find it from anyone else ...

Re: Uninstall Version 7 and revert to Version 6
As others have said you can carry on working just as before, as I have done. The only real difference is the floating Citation window which annoys me, but I just have it on the right hand side so it is equivalent to how it was. I would advise persevering with FH7 as the extra bits such as spell chec...

Re: possible new item for wish list
I don't think the upgrade to 7.0.1.1 is on general release yet, probably because Calico Pie are working on some other aspects as well and would rather have one upgrade available. I was notified of it as I raised a ticket for the <para> issue, I suspect you won't have long to wait (I'm not sure that ...

Re: possible new item for wish list
For your information the <para> issue has been fixed in v7.0.1.1. I have some sympathy for your view that <para> is not always required, but I think that is too ambitious. For Calico Pie I think it has to be one thing or the other. When I don't want it I amend the rtf in Word. For events like a marr...

I have told Calico Pie that the update 7.0.1.1 went perfectly yesterday but I cannot comment how Calico Pie choose to roll it out

Re: FH7 report paragraph fix - new version v7.0.1.1
I have had some correspondence with Calico Pie and I downloaded the upgrade 7.0.1.1 on my backup laptop and ran it again this evening. It went perfectly completing in seconds followed by a reboot. As far as I can see it OK to use. I have noticed a few other improvements like when you enter/edit addi...

Re: Splitting off roots into new databases
I completely agree that it is not best to split your database. An alternative thought is to create a Flag for each branch and you can customise the Property Window to show them (as I have done for different reasons - see image) which makes it easy to maintain them. Also, you can set them (or clear t...

Re: FH7 report paragraph fix - new version v7.0.1.1
I left v7.0.1.1. installer running and after 48 minutes including a reboot it completed and I am pleased to say that the paragraph markers seem to be being recognised now. See below. I then saved the report as a pdf but that still saved as a bloated image, ~10mB for a couple of pages. Good progress ...

Update - I have got FH7 back, I had to leave the installer running for a couple of hours. I will try the fix again now and just leave it running.

FH7 report paragraph fix - new version v7.0.1.1
Yesterday evening I had an email from Calico Pie telling me that the paragraph problem has been fixed with a link to a new version 7.0.1.1. I down loaded this installer, ran it and it hung on the screen Creating Directories. After an hour I aborted it using Task Manager as no progress was being show...

Re: Registration district numbers
I got excited when I saw the link, but sadly the downloaded file gives no more information than GRO gives. But it would be handy if you didn't know the registration district name. For me for example, 748 is Suffolk, but I what I really want to know is what the subsequent 1d, 1c etc refer to. Presuma...

Re: Registration district numbers
I have never managed to find a list of what these district numbers apply to. Now that many registration districts are county wide, the detail is less precise than it was previously. Why not write to GRO and see what they say?

Re: Saint and Street format conventions
As has already been said I think it is best to adopt a convention and stick to it. Out of interest I use St. Mary's Church opposed to just St. Mary in case I am referring to the parish. I spell out Road and Street in full (but use St. if like 'St. James Road' and use 'and' not '&'. Just my personal ...

Re: One Name Studies
That is my approach, we are collecting data on a few rarer names and in fact we have managed make a few links as a result. FH handles large numbers of people very well, we have ~26,000 at present.

FH7 web site creation - new folder
I updated my website this morning and everything seemed to work, but the files didn't seem to get updated. I then discovered that FH7 now writes the files to a different folder and they look fine to me. Just in case this helps anyone the image shows the previous and new folders.

Re: No searchable text in PDF reports
Indeed but work arounds are never perfect, lesser of two evils? The only other option I can see is manipulating images in Word before generating the pdf, but for a large report that is going to be tedious if not impossible. I'm with you, I can't believe Calico Pie has done this deliberately. It has ...

Re: No searchable text in PDF reports
To get a searchable pdf which is also a sensible size Save As rtf, load it into Word and Save As a pdf. I shall be using this route for the foreseeable future (tier 4 willing!)

Re: V7 PDF creation very slow, creating huge files
I raised a ticket a couple of days ago and had the acknowledgement. I suspect it will be while before we hear anything and hopefully Calico Pie have realised that there are a number of issues with reporting and the credibility of FH is being damaged.

Re: V7 PDF creation very slow, creating huge files
My high spec laptop after 40 minutes finally produced a pdf for my 470 page report, a whopping 520mb. Creating the same report via rtf and Word produces a pdf of 5mb, about 1%, the same ratio as I previously observed. I agree with the conclusion that something is broken in FH7 but it maybe in part t...

Re: V7 PDF creation very slow, creating huge files
Had a go at creating a much larger report, 470 pages and gave up with pdf production after 30 minutes. rtf production went quite quickly, resultant pdf from Word was 5.5 Mb. I did notice via Task manager that disk read/write was running solidly at 100% all of the time, and in fact 15 minutes later i...

Re: V7 PDF creation very slow, creating huge files
Just tried a few examples, no issues generating pdfs other than the known <para><br> issues. But a very large pdf file created for 13 pages with one small image, 15mb. Saved the same report as a rft file, loaded into Word, saved as a pdf, size 0.15Mb which about what I would expect, i.e.1% of the FH...

Re: Citation Date in FH7
Like many things FH provides facilities for you to do what suits your purpose. I use the Citation Date to record the date I entered the information because the date of the event is recorded in the Event and it provides me with an audit trail. Also, I believe you don't actually know the date of many ...

Just out of interest I used to use Unknown but I have switched to _____ (5 underscores). I don't think there is a perfect answer, do what suits you best and be consistent.
