Re: Where within Source field
I suspect your frustration in part may be because of the use of carriage returns. In TMG I recorded BMDs for example as "Ipswich 1843 Q4 vol:12 page:264" without any carriage returns. When I moved to FH whilst these ended up in the wrong field, running the plugin moved it to Where Within Source . I ...

Customised map markers and saving maps
Having moved from TMG to FH last year I am in the process of geocoding all my places (as close as possible to the right spot) so I can make full advantage of the mapping facility as I use colour coded markers in maps to illustrate movement over time for a persons ancestry in my family books. I have ...

Re: "Shires" and "Counties"
All the above is accurate information. I like to record addresses as they were at the time. As a policy I record things like Yorkshire, Lancashire but also as Devon and Somerset as shire bit of these has never really been used. As Mike said a bit quaint. As has been mentioned Middlesex covered a lot...

Re: New User: how many projects for a family tree?
For your information and as an example I have ~25,000 people with all their associated records and FH doesn't flinch. As has been said above, I would strongly recommend just one project. I too found a connection with my wife's family in the mid 1800s. I moved from TMG to FH six months ago and think ...

Re: Copy or Link?
Mike, I have always stored my 'media files' in a separate folder for each person within an Exhibits folder. This currently stands ~7,500 files in 2,200 folders at ~6.3 gb. Now I am using FH I realise that FH stores the linked images again in the Media folder which is fine, and as you say gets backed...

Re: Birth/Death Registration Dates
Being a recent convert from TMG I have this week set up a custom death registration Fact with the sentence :- {his/her} death was registered< by {%FACT._SHAR[1]>NAME[1]:FULL%}> {date} in the {_place}<, {note}> eg Her death was registered by Harold Eric Wilkinson on 12th December 1874 in the Linton "...

Re: Source where-used report (citation)
I migrated from TMG to FH last autumn after a bit of hesitation as I have ~25,000 people in my file. I do not regret it. Whilst I have had to adopt some different ways of doing somethings overall it is much better, especially things like mapping. I suggest if you haven't already, use the TMG import ...

Re: Fact Date Warning query
Mike, Thank you, I thought that would be the case but worth just asking. I appreciate you get the pop-ups when entering/amending data so that as you say makes the query redundant. I have a very large file ~25,000 people and associated facts. The query initially gave me nearly 1,100 warnings which I ...

Fact Date Warning query
Having moved to FH from TMG last October I am using this very helpful query to highlight potential errors and correct them where necessary. However, I now have quite a few Warnings which are correct (e.g.baptisms late in life, marriages late in life, living to 107 etc). Is there a way of saying this...

Re: Box Fill with another Colour doesn't save
I suspect that you may not have saved the diagram. When the diagram is open goto Diagram -> Save Diagram As -> Family Historian Chart and give it a name. You can open it again in the future via View -> Saved charts . I do this to save my modified diagrams, the only problem is the sheer number that c...

Re: How to correctly record date and place from BMD Index entries
Similarly I record the citation as source 'England and Wales Birth Index' and where as ' Samford 1856 Q4 vol:4a page:123'. In the birth field I would enter Q4 1856 unless I had any other information as this is best estimate and doesn't make any assumptions. In the place I would enter 'Samford Regist...

Re: Citations from TMG
I used the Plug-In 'Move Citation Text Fields' to move citation detail from 'Text from Source' to 'Where Within Source' and it worked like a dream. I also used the Plug-In 'Change Any Fact Tag' to tidy up some bespoke TMG Tags. Other tidying up things I have been doing include, amending sentence tem...

Re: Biting the bullet
I moved to FH from TMG a few months ago and used the import facility. My database is quite large, ~25, 000 people and associated records, so re-entry wasn't possible. The import worked very well (FH does have a specific TMG import facility) and everything seemed to import. but some work was required...

Re: Reliance on subscription sites FMP, Ancestry etc.
In addition GRO now has a free search of birth and death indexes. For births you can now see the mother's maiden name and for deaths you can see the age, both back to 1837. I think this is fantastic as it gives you extra information for free and makes it much more certain that you are buying the rig...

Married Name
I am a little confused. Having moved from TMG which automatically created a married name tag when you entered a marriage. In FH this doesn't seem to happen yet when using the filters in the records window the correct person is found even if the married name has not been entered as an alternate name ...

Re: Place format and geocoding
I too migrated from TMG recently and have been struggling a bit with Places and Addresses . I have concluded that the best option for me is to ignore the Address field and have everything in the Place field without leading blanks. In TMG it was a structured Place, so everything lined up neatly but i...

Re: Showing Place of Birth of Children?
In the Facts window it does show when a child is born when Timeline is activated, but not the place of birth which is something I readily need (I expect because I am used to having it in the equivalent of the Facts window in TMG). The plugin Quick Child Lookup does this and you can add it to the Too...

Jane,
Thank you, but I have already done that, see attached. When there are no photos the boxes are all the same size as required, but as soon as photos are included the sizes change. Is this a bug?

Uniform diagram box sizes
For my books have the boxes in tree diagrams set at the same size by setting max, min and std to the same dimension. Boxes stayed the same size in TMG with or without photos. In FH boxes seem to go to random sizes when photos are included. I have fiddled with many settings I but cannot seem to get b...

I have recently moved across from TMG and tried various screen layouts. I have settled on the one shown for the moment, probably because it is closer to TMG and I use a lap top with a wide screen. I have reduced the font sizes in the Focus window. The great beauty of FH is its flexibility in this re...

Mike, Thank you for your good work, this seems very good now. I have tried Approx, Estimated, Calculated dates and they all seem to be fine with Updating and Removal . My previous error seems to be resolved. Period dates seem unchanged and I haven't used Date Phrases as this wasn't something in TMG....
